Thursday Sports Day – Wimbledon Women’s Final Set, Hamlin Out of Nationwide Race

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) – Jameer Nelson has a new deal in principle to return to the Magic. The 30-year-old Orlando point guard announced the news on his verified Twitter account Thursday, just a week after opting out of the final season and nearly $8 million of his contract to test free agency. Nelson has spent each of his eight NBA seasons in Orlando, who drafted him along with Dwight Howard in 2004. Howard is signed through next season, but recently told the Magic he wanted a trade to Brooklyn.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) – NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin has a sore back that will keep him out of Friday’s Nationwide race. Hamlin still plans to drive Saturday night in the Sprint Cup race at Daytona International Speedway. Hamlin currently ranks fifth in Cup points. Hamlin had been slated to drive the No. 18 Toyota in the second-tier series. Instead, Joe Gibbs Racing will move defending race champion Joey Logano from the No. 20 to the No. 18, and have Clint Bowyer behind the wheel in the 18.

WIMBLEDON, England (AP) – Getting through her Wimbledon semifinal was easier for Agnieszka Radwanska than getting through the post-match news conference. Radwanska reached her first Grand Slam final by outplaying Angelique Kerber 6-3, 6-4 at the All England Club then succumbed to a coughing fit on the podium in the interview room that forced her to cut short the line of questioning from reporters. Before that, though, her tennis had done all the talking she needed. Radwanska used her consistent groundstrokes to wear down Kerber in the long rallies, finishing with only six unforced errors. She became the first Polish Grand Slam finalist since 1939, and can take over the No. 1 ranking by beating Serena Williams in the final. Radwanska says “this tournament is already one of the big parts of tennis history in Poland. I’m happy to be part of that.”

Cheese maker granted loan with no-interest

COLUMBUS, Neb. (AP) — A Honduran cheese maker has been granted a no-interest loan that will help the company establish its first U.S. production facility.

reports  that the Columbus City Council unanimously approved the $91,000 loan request on Monday. The loan is expected to cover about half the cost of equipping Central American Foods LLC’s new facility.

Owners Carlos and Marlon Reyes, of Richland, are renovating a portion of the building for their cheese-making operation. The 12,400-square-foot site will share space with an existing Frontier Communications service center.

Marlon Reyes says the Honduras-based company has been exporting cheese to the U.S. for five years. The Columbus location is expected to be operational by late August or early September.

Lake McConaughy predicted to drop up to 20 ft

OGALLALA, Neb. (AP) — The water level at Nebraska’s largest lake is steadily declining because irrigators downstream are demanding more water to deal with hot, dry conditions.

Officials at the Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation District predict that Lake McConaughy  in western Nebraska could drop 20 feet this year if the weather remains dry.

Civil engineer Cory Steinke says the lake is declining about 1.5-to-2 feet per week because more water is being released than what is flowing in.

The amount of water flowing into the lake from snowmelt has been less than half the average amount.

Last year, Lake McConaughy was nearly full because of above-average snowmelt.

Now, the lake is only about 74 percent full. The lake’s lowest reading of 18 percent was in 2004 as drought gripped the region.

21 year old dies at family farm

YORK, Neb. (AP) — A 21-year-old York man has died after he was caught in a piece of grain-bin machinery on his family’s farm.

Local media reports that Tyler Grotz died on Tuesday.

York Fire Chief Kevin Stuhr says Grotz got caught in a sweep auger while getting grain out of a bin. Rescue workers were dispatched to the family farm southwest of York just before 8 p.m., but Grotz was pronounced dead at the scene.

Family members have scheduled a visitation from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday. Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday on the main floor of the York City Auditorium.

Taylor & Taylor

Taylor Swift’s parents thought pretty highly of James Taylor — they named their now-famous daughter after the folk-rock legend — and she, too, is a devoted fan. Monday night, the country star joined James onstage at Tanglewood in Lenox, Mass., where they dueted on three songs: his classic “Fire and Rain” and her “Ours” and “Love Story.”

This wasn’t the first time the two have teamed up. Back in November, James played with Taylor at Madison Square Garden, and while that one was a surprise, the Massachusetts collaboration was an open secret. Hence the outpuring of young fans, among them Lucie Mazursky, an 8-year-old Swift superfan who gushed to the Berkshire Eagle about how excited she was to see the concert.

“I almost fainted,” Lucie said, adding, “I only have her songs on my iPod.”

Tom Cruise highest paid actor

Tom Cruise may not have a wife — but he does have a lot of money. On Tuesday — Cruise’s 50th birthday — he was named Forbes’ highest-paid actor in Hollywood.

The actor banked $75 million between May 2011 and May 2012 — putting him $38 million ahead of the second place-place finishers, Leonardo DiCaprio and Adam Sandler. Both of them pocketed $37 million during the same time period.

Cruise’s haul came mostly from Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol, which netted $700 million worldwide. Tom reportedly got a piece of the profits.

Tom is worth an estimated $250 million, but TMZ reported that he and Katie signed an “iron-clad” prenup. Despite the terms of the document, it is believed he will still have to shell out a lot of money in child support for their daughter Suri.

  • Dwayne Johnson and Ben Stiller rounded out the top five on the Forbes list.

Fireworks cause house fire… displacing Gering family

GERING, Neb. (AP) — Authorities are blaming fireworks for a blaze that displaced a western Nebraska family.

Local media reports that the fire on Wednesday destroyed a garage and caused significant smoke and water damage to a home in Gering.

Fire Chief Jay Templar says the blaze was caused by discarded fireworks placed in a trash can outside the garage. He says antiques and other items stored in the garage were destroyed.

The fire also set a tree on fire between property lines.

Firefighters were called to the scene shortly before 11 p.m. Wednesday.
