Bellwood awarded $1.7 Million for water treatment plant

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The U.S. Department of Agriculture has awarded $1.7 million to help an eastern Nebraska village build a water treatment plant.

USDA Rural Development officials say the new plant will help the village of Bellwood clean its water supply, which is contaminated with arsenic.

The money was provided through the USDA’s Rural Development Water and Waste Disposal Loan and Grant program.

Maxine Moul, the agency’s Nebraska State director, says the project will help the community secure a safe and clean water supply.

City and County switch to internet based phone service, saving money.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The Lancaster County Board and the city of Lincoln are ditching their traditional phone service in favor of an Internet-based system that will collectively save them more than $600,000 per year.

The county board agreed Tuesday to enter into a package deal with the city to install and use Voice Over Internet Protocol, a phone system that uses Ethernet cables and an Internet network to connect parties.

County budget director Dennis Meyer says the initial investment for new phones for the county is $800,000 and $1.1 million for the city, but the payments would be spread over four years and have no budget impact.

Local media says the two governments currently spend $941,000 per year on more than 2,600 phone lines.

Vandal spree angers local Hastings residents

HASTINGS, Neb. (AP) — Residents of Hastings say they are frustrated with an apparent spree of vandalism to vehicles that has left tires slashed and car windows broken.

Local media says vandals have been reported in at least three areas of the city in recent days.

Bryan Resser says he found his new truck Monday morning with a flat tire, a punctured hole in a side panel and other marks and carvings. He says he doubts police will find whoever did it but he hopes the spree stops soon.

Resident Andrea Dieken says both of her family’s cars had tires slashed, and her husband saw almost every single car on the street had similar damage.

A police sergeant told the television station there are no leads yet in the case.

Despite Strong Outing From Guthrie, Rockies Lose (LISTEN LIVE TONIGHT on ESPN Radio 1410)

The Colorado Rockies couldn’t find the big hit in a 4-1 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium last night. The Rockies tallied ten hits in the game but left nine runners on base in the losing effort. Starting pitcher Jeremy Guthrie turned in his best outing since Opening Day, pitching six innings and allowing just two runs on six hits while striking out two. Guthrie also delivered the Rockies’ only run of the evening, notching his first career RBI with a single in the fifth inning that scored Johnny Herrera. Carlos Gonzalez had a pair of hits to extend his hitting streak to 12 games. It’s the longest active hitting streak in the National League. The Rockies and Cardinals finish up their four-game series in St. Louis tonight. ESPN Radio 1410 has all the action, with pregame coverage at 6:30 and the first pitch at 7:15.

Rockies Option Outman to Minors, Recall Torres

Josh Outman couldn’t live up to his last name on the mound for the Colorado Rockies. Now he’s headed to the minor leagues to try and find himself. The Rockies optioned Outman to AA Tulsa before yesterday evening’s game. In 15 appearances, seven of them starts, the left-handed Outman was 0-3 with an era of 9.00. He had allowed 39 hits and 16 walks in 31 and two-thirds innings of work. To replace Outman on the roster, the Rockies recalled right-handed pitcher Carlos Torres from AAA Colorado Springs. It’s Torres’s third stint on the big club this season.
