Rockies Drop Opener in St. Louis (LISTEN LIVE TONIGHT on ESPN Radio 1410)

The Colorado Rockies’ final road trip before the All-Star Break began with a thud. Another night-long pitching nightmare saw the Rockies fall 9-3 to the St. Louis Cardinals last night. Starting pitcher Josh Outman was lucky to leave the game trailing only 2-0, as he walked five batters in his three innings of work. Relievers Tyler Chatwood and Adam Ottavino combined to give up six runs over the next four innings to put the game out of reach. The Rockies got on the board with Tyler Colvin’s ninth home-run of the season, a two-run blast in the fourth that momentarily tied the game. Carlos Gonzalez had a pair of hits to extend his hitting streak to 10 games. The Rockies and Cardinals play game two of their series at Busch Stadium tonight. ESPN Radio 1410 has the action, with pregame coverage at 6:30 and the first pitch at 7:15.

1,000 acres in Nebraska National Forest burned

HALSEY, Neb. (AP) — Firefighters are battling a wildfire that has burned more than 1,000 acres in the rugged hills of the Nebraska National Forest.

The fire that started Saturday forced the evacuation of two campgrounds. Smoke is visible from Highway 2.

Bessey District Ranger Tim Buskirk says the fire has been difficult to fight because of the terrain. Sunday’s forecast for high temperatures and wind gusts up to 30 mph could make it hard to contain the fire.

Two other fires in the area have been contained, but they remain only a few miles away. One of those fires was north of Stapleton and one was near Ringgold.

Officials believe that lightning sparked the fires.

In an email sent through her agent to USATF, Tarmoh said: “I understand that with this decision I am no longer running the 100m dash in the Olympic Games and will be an alternate for the event.”

USATF President Stephanie Hightower said the organization is “disappointed” Tarmoh had a change of heart.

Weekend fires threaten few homes

NORTH PLATTE Neb-The pre Fourth of July weekend brought a few minor blazes endangering few homes, and putting some dry grass and trees up in smoke

Source: Anonymous

Sunday about 1PM a grass fire threatened two houses and an out building. The fire lit 80 acres of trees and 20 acres of grassland.

Fire fighters put out the flames before any structural damage occurred. North Platte Firefighters received aid from Hershey, Wallace, and Sutherland Fire Departments.  The Nebraska Department of Roads and local land owners also helped crews extinguish the flames.

Cause of the fire is undetermined.

Another fire burning weed stubble occurred near Highway 83 and Kaneb Road at about 8:00PM taking crews 30 minutes to put out.
“We want to caution everyone to take caution” says Assistant Fire Chief Dennis Thompson of North Platte Fire Department.  “Have water close by when lighting fireworks, don’t light them near dry grass or trees, just use common sense and be as safe as we can with this stuff”
