New law benefits young athletes

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Young athletes who sign up for youth sports programs will not have to pay sales taxes on any fees they’re charged, under a new Nebraska law taking effect Sunday.

The law sailed through the Legislature and was signed by Gov. Dave Heineman in April. That approval came after hundreds of soccer moms and baseball dads complained about a state Revenue Department proposal to tax participation in youth sports.

Department officials say they were trying to fix an inconsistency in how Nebraska’s sales tax law is enforced. The state has been taxing admissions to swimming pools, bowling tournaments and other events since the state adopted its sales tax in 1967.

Department officials argued the law should also apply to youths who pay “admission” fees to participate in sports leagues and tournaments.

Therapist to participate in case involving abuse of developmentally disabled

BEATRICE, Neb. (AP) — A judge has ruled that a therapist can interpret for developmentally disabled witnesses in an upcoming trial against a former Beatrice State Developmental Center employee accused of abusing center residents.

Local media reports that the judge ruled Friday on a motion by Matthew Pangborn’s defense attorney objecting to the use of an interpreter. Prosecutors plan to use a therapist to interpret verbal and non-verbal communication by witnesses, who have difficulty speaking.

Pangborn was among five workers charged with abuse after an investigation last year at the Beatrice State Development Center. One has pleaded guilty to charges in the case, three others have pleaded no contest.

Pangborn faces a July 9 trial on 11 counts.

sentenced to prison for theft and fleeing police to avoid arrest.

Local media reports that 23-year-old Andrew Esquitin was sentenced Friday in Hall County District Court to up to five years in prison. He was also ordered not to drive for two years following his release.

Police say officers were attempting to serve Esquitin with an arrest warrant on those charges at his home in March when he fled to the basement, claiming to have a gun.

The neighborhood was cordoned off and SWAT officers were called in. Esquitin surrendered peacefully about an hour and a half later.

No charges were brought against Esquitin from the standoff.

One vehicle crash takes life on Saturday

CLATONIA, Neb. (AP) — A Beatrice man is dead following a one-vehicle crash five miles south of Clatonia in southeastern Nebraska.

Local media reports that 59-year-old Bruce Benash died in the early Saturday crash.

Gage County Sheriff Gus Gustafson says Benash was driving a pickup eastbound on a county road when he lost control, hit part of a bridge and rolled the truck. Benash was pronounced dead at the scene.

An autopsy has been ordered. Sheriff’s investigators say Benash was not wearing a seat belt.

Fremont radiator manufacturer not meeting loan standards

FREMONT, Neb. (AP) — The city of Fremont has declared an auto radiator manufacturer in default on a $600,000 loan garnered through federal stimulus money.

Local media says that to get the loan, Hero Automotive agreed last year to create at least 15 full-time jobs paying at least $10 an hour and keep those jobs for three years. It also had to provide health insurance, covering at least 50 percent of that cost.

The company was granted a six-month extension last year to meet the minimum requirements, and in January told the newspaper it had 15 full-time employees.

But a worker reported to the city in February that the company was not meeting minimum requirements.

City Attorney Paul Payne says the company had only nine full-time workers on June 15.

Who Is the Daddy?

On Friday (June 29th), Adele announced that she and her boyfriend, Simon Konecki, are having a baby. But who’s the Grammy-winning singer’s guy? Here’s some background on the 24-year-old singer’s beau:

He’s 37 and has been married once before to stylist Clary Fisher. They wed in 2004. Earlier this year, when Adele’s new romance went public, there had been reports that Konecki and Fisher weren’t officially divorced yet, prompting Adele to take action. She addressed the rumors on her website: “This is the first and last time I will comment on the details of my relationship with Simon. Contrary to reports and headlines in the press today, Simon is divorced and has been for 4 years.”

Konecki already has a five-year-old daughter with his ex-wife, reports Us Weekly.

He’s a former investment banker, who’s now co-founder and CEO of British charity Drop4Drop, an organization that aims to help alleviate the global water crisis, by delivering efficient and accountable clean water projects across the developing world,” according to its website.

Konecki graduated from the U.K. boarding school, Eton, the same school Prince William and Prince Harry attended.

  • Adele’s baby news announcement explained: “I’m delighted to announce that Simon and I are expecting our first child together. I wanted you to hear the news direct from me, obviously we’re over the moon and very excited but please respect our privacy at this precious time. Yours always, Adele xx”

Why? Oh! Why?

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are getting divorced after five years of marriage. Katie initiated the split, filing divorce papers on Thursday (June 28th) in New York City in which she cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason she wants to end the marriage.

An attorney for Holmes released a statement saying, “This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family. Katie’s primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter’s best interest.”

Cruise was on location in Iceland shooting a movie called Oblivion and was reportedly “blindsided” by Katie’s filing. His publicist reacted in a statement that read, “Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children. Please allow them their privacy to work this out.”

He later added, “I would hope that it’s not a contentious matter. I know Tom is not a particularly contentious person.”

Katie, 33, is seeking “primary residential custody” of the couple’s six-year-old daughter, Suri. Cruise, 49, has two children from his previous marriage to Nicole Kidman.

  • Katie and Tom stepped out together out of the blue in 2005 and infamously gushed about each other to the media during their whirlwind courtship. Katie quickly became pregnant with their daughter Suri, and they tied the knot shortly after she was born.

SCIENTOLOGY BEHIND THE SPLIT?

TMZ.com reported that Tom’s ties to Scientology was the major reason that Katie filed for divorce. Sources say that the actress was fearful that Tom would “drag” their daughter Suri deeper into the church, as she’s now at an age where it could become a significant part of her life.

Insiders also say that religion was the motivation for Katie to seek full custody, as she doesn’t want Tom to control decisions regarding Suri’s involvement with the church.

Although there have been rumors of trouble in the couple’s relationship ever since they got together — they were seen holding hands in Iceland two weeks ago. Katie was, however, noticeably absent from her husband’s side during his recent Rock of Ages premiere events.

  • TMZ.com also reported that Katie recently rented a new apartment in New York City, separate from the townhouse that the couple shares. That is where she’s reportedly been staying with Suri in recent weeks. The website also noted that Tom stayed in a NYC hotel when he was in town for a few days last month, rather than in their apartment.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT WHERE THEY FILE?

Katie reportedly filed for divorce in New York because courts there are supposedly more likely to grant her sole legal custody and control over child-rearing decisions than California courts.

This could reportedly hurt Tom financially as well since the tax rates are much higher there. Sources say he has purposefully been trying to avoid seeming as though they are residents of New York specifically to avoid any tax-related issues.

  • RadarOnline.com claims that Cruise “will file a response in New York, asking that the divorce proceedings be halted in the Big Apple because California is the proper venue for the matter to proceed. Team Cruise is going to assert that Katie doesn’t meet the residency requirements to file in New York, and that both live full time in California, specifically Los Angeles.”

WHAT’S THE DEAL WITH 33?

Holmes was Cruise’s third wife — and like Mimi Rogers and Nicole Kidman before her — she was 33-years-old when they split.

PerezHilton.com reported that there’s an interesting 33 tie to Scientology — as the Hubbard Association of Scientologists was established in Phoenix, Arizona — which lies on the 33rd parallel. And according to numerology, 33 is the “Master Teacher.”

  • Meanwhile, according to the couple’s prenup, Katie reportedly got $3 million for each year she remained married to Tom — up to a maximum of 11 years, which totals $33 million. If they were married more than 11 years, she could have been entitled to half of his entire fortune.

IS KATIE BEING FOLLOWED?

TMZ.com claims that Scientology insiders have been trailing Katie over the past few weeks because they believe she could be a threat to the organization.

Sources told the website that there have been several “mysterious” men and vehicles around Katie’s apartment in recent weeks and they have followed her when she’s out.

  • TMZ noted that a publication has been tailing Katie for reporting purposes — so that could possibly be the source of the followers.
