Animal hoarder who dumped 23 dead or dying dogs, banned from living with animals, gets discovered..living with animals

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) — A 49-year-old Iowa woman has been given nine years of probation in Nebraska because she violated terms of an earlier probation sentence by living with dogs.

Denise Withee, of Mapleton, Iowa, was sentenced on Thursday. Her new sentence also includes a provision that bars her from owning or living with any animals.

Withee had been on probation for dumping 23 dead or dying dogs in a Nebraska cornfield in 2008. She has admitted that she violated probation by living with 13 dogs at the Iowa home she shares with her mother. Iowa authorities discovered the dogs in January.

Withee’s attorney, Vicki Kenney, says Withee fits the description of an animal hoarder and described her as “an addict of animals.”

Chris Beutler calling on residents to please save water!

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Lincoln’s mayor is again calling on residents to voluntarily conserve water for the rest of the summer.

Mayor Chris Beutler said Thursday that the city needs to reduce water consumption by about 20 percent. Earlier this week, Lincoln used 80 million gallons of water on Tuesday and 76 million gallons on Wednesday.

Beutler says he is trying to avoid issuing mandatory water restrictions. So he hopes residents will adhere to outdoor water use limits.

The city wants residents with street addresses ending in even numbers to limit outdoor water use — including watering lawns and washing vehicles — to Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. Those with addresses ending in odd numbers are asked to limit their outdoor water use to Tuesday, Thursdays and Saturdays.

SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. (AP) — The case of a 19-year-old Henry man charged with manslaughter and motor vehicle homicide rests with a judge.

The trial for Bryan Bloom concluded Thursday with closing arguments and Scotts Bluff County District Judge Randy Lippstreu is considering the case.

Bloom is accused in an accident June 20, 2011, near the Wyoming-Nebraska state line that killed 18-year-old Johrdan Stone. Stone died after he stuck his head out of the window of the van Bloom was driving and he was struck by a temporary road sign in a construction zone.

Prosecutors say Bloom was driving intoxicated and ran off the road in the construction zone.

Bloom’s defense attorney says the sign was improperly placed in an unsafe location which caused Stone’s death.
