LINCOLN, NE (AP) — First-year defensive coordinator John Papuchis says one of Nebraska’s top priorities is to shore up a line that has been underperforming. Opponents last season rushed for the second-most yards against the Cornhuskers since 1977, and Nebraska recorded its second-fewest sacks since the statistic was first officially tracked in 1981. Ends Cameron Meredith and Jason Ankrah and tackle Baker Steinkuhler have locked up three of the four starting jobs. With those three starting nine games together last season, Nebraska allowed an average of 158 yards on the ground to rank 64th nationally. That number ballooned to 176 yards against Big Ten opponents. Only 11 of the Huskers’ 21 sacks came in the eight conference games. Meredith said new line coach Rick Kaczenski is stressing the importance of playing aggressively.
