Tuesday Sports Day – Dodge Set to Leave NASCAR

DETROIT (AP) – A person briefed on the matter says that Dodge is pulling out of its NASCAR sponsorship at the end of this season.

Chrysler, which owns the Dodge brand, has scheduled a conference call for Tuesday afternoon to announce the withdrawal.

The person did not know the reason for the decision. They did not want to be identified because the company hasn’t made any announcements yet.

Among the four manufacturers in the top racing series, Dodge is now in last place. Chevrolet is in first, followed by Toyota and then Ford.

Dodge’s long-term future in NASCAR had been subject to speculation after its flagship team, Penske Racing, announced it was moving to Ford next season.

ESPN reported on the move earlier Tuesday.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) – Jaguars receiver Justin Blackmon signed a four-year deal worth about $18.5 million and took part in his first practice at training camp.

Blackmon must have three days of non-contact practice before he’s allowed to put on full pads. Coach Mike Mularkey said after practice Tuesday that Blackmon will not play in the first preseason game Friday against the New York Giants.

Blackmon, the fifth pick in the NFL draft, missed the first 11 days of practice. He was the last of the 32 first-round picks to sign a contract.

Several days before camp opened, Blackmon pleaded guilty to an aggravated DUI charge that occurred in June in Stillwater, Okla.

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) – Oklahoma State center Phillip Jurick has been suspended indefinitely after he pleaded not guilty to charges that he possessed marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Coach Travis Ford announced Tuesday that Jurick will not travel with the Cowboys on their upcoming foreign tour in Spain and that a final decision on his status will be made when more information is obtained.

Jurick was charged Monday with counts of possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. He pleaded not guilty to the misdemeanor charges Monday, and he was scheduled to appear again in court on Aug. 20.

Jurick played in 27 games and started 16 for Oklahoma State last season before injuries ended his season. The 6-foot-11 center averaged 1.6 points and 4.9 rebounds.
