KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. (AP) – After a mostly calm opening day, windy conditions greeted golfers for round two of the PGA Championship at Kiawah Island.
First-round leader Carl Pettersson doesn’t tee off until this afternoon. The Swede fired a 6-under-par 66 and began the day with a one-stroke lead over a group of four golfers headed by Rory McIlroy.
Tiger Woods began the day three shots off the pace.
NEW ORLEANS (AP) – Jonathan Vilma has returned to federal court in New Orleans today, where a judge will hear arguments on the NFL’s motion to dismiss the Saints linebacker’s lawsuit seeking to overturn his bounty suspension.
It’s not clear when U.S. District Judge Ginger Berrigan will rule. If she doesn’t dismiss the lawsuit, she could potentially rule on Vilma’s request to be allowed to temporarily return to the Saints while the case proceeds.
Roger Goodell has suspended Vilma for the entire 2012 season. The NFL commissioner says the veteran linebacker was one of the ringleaders of a program that offered Saints defenders improper cash bonuses for injuring opponents.
Vilma, several teammates and Saints assistant head coach Joe Vitt have testified that Vilma never paid or accepted money for injuring another player.
LONDON (AP) – The IOC has formally stripped American cyclist Tyler Hamilton of his gold medal from the 2004 Athens Olympics.
The first-place prize now goes to Russian rider Viatcheslav Ekimov. American Bobby Julich will be moved up from bronze to silver, and Michael Rogers of Australia from fourth to bronze.
After years of denials, Hamilton told CBS’s “60 Minutes” last year that he had repeatedly used performance-enhancing drugs. The IOC asked for documents from the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency before reallocating the medals.
