Foster E. Broge

Foster E. Broge, 91, of North Platte, formerly of Sutherland, passed away August 28, 2012 at Linden Court.

He was born November 2, 1920, to Frank G. and Abigail Campbell Broge at Twin grove, Wisconsin. He was raised on a farm.

He married Gertrude E. Rose on December 20, 1941, in Dubuque, Iowa. He served in the United States Army from September 1942 until his honorable discharge in November 1945. His Army service took him to Camp Roberts, CA, Camp Hood, OR, and Hawaii. He served with the 270th Ordiance Medium Maintence Co.

He was involved in the trucking business all of his adult life. He worked for Texaco and other companies. In 1952, Foster and Gertrude moved the family to Nebraska. He started his own business known as Broge Egg Company. He was the sole carrier of eggs produced by Lemmerman Hatchery in Palmer, NE, to Safeway in Denver, CO. He later purchased a produce company which provided produce for all of the Sixth Street Stores and other smaller stores. He sold that business and hauled a variety of goods as an independent carrier until he retired in 1984.

Foster was a member of the Sutherland United Methodist church, Platte Valley Masonic Lodge No. 32, and American Legion Post 119 at St. Paul, NE. He was a charter member of the current Oregon Trail Golf Course at Sutherland. He also served on the Sutherland Village Board.

He was an avid fan of baseball and softball. He played softball in the Army. He strongly supported Sutherland youth baseball programs from t-ball through American Legion competition. He and Gertrude attended many state and regional American Legion tournaments.

Foster loved golf. He started playing in his late 30’s. When he retired, he played almost daily until Rheumatoid Arthritis forced him to quit. He played in his last tournament at age 78.

He enjoyed his daily coffee groups, working in the yard, maintaining his equipment, or puttering on some project in his workshop. He was happiest when he was busy and often could be found helping a friend or neighbor or mentoring a younger trucker. He was a good husband, father, and grandfather. Above all, he was a loyal friend and always a gentleman.

Survivors include two daughters, Linda Broge and Janice (Paul) Goosey all of North Platte; one son, Craig (Lori) Broge of Sutherland; two grandsons, Marcus and Matthew Goosey of North Platte; and numerous other family members and friends.
