Phyllis J. Hansen, age 92, of North Platte, Nebraska died Thursday, August 30,
2012, at Linden Court in North Platte. She was born April 7, 1920 to Roger &
Romie (Sanders) Smith at Wellfleet, Nebraska.
She grew up in Wellfleet, Nebraska. The family moved to a farm south of North Platte in 1936. She graduated from North Platte High School in 1937 and after completing normal school training she began teaching in rural Lincoln County Schools at the age of 17. After five years of teaching she worked at AAA (Agricultural Office) in North Platte. She married Elwyn Hansen at the First Baptist Church in North Platte, on October 10, 1945. She took time out to raise her daughters and care for Grandpa Hansen who made his home with them. From 1960 to 1963 she worked as a bookkeeper for Hansen-Smith Implement business. She began working as bookkeeper for Carpet City in North Platte in 1967, retiring in 1981. She continued to live in her home until November of 2011 when she moved to Linden Court, also in North Platte.
She was a 65 year active member of First Baptist Church in North Platte,
Nebraska where she was involved in a number of organizations, including
American Baptist Women and Judson’s couples group. She was Sunday school
Superintendent for a number of years, church Treasurer, Sunday school teacher
and Youth Sponsor, church circle member and a member of Pastoral Search
Committees. She was also a Camp Fire Girls leader for six years.
Survivors include 2 daughters: Rogene & husband James Wenburg of Beaver City, Nebraska, and Renae & husband James Sexson of North Platte, Nebraska; a brother: Marvin (Bonnie) Smith of Napa, CA; sister-in-laws: Phyllis Hansen of Carpinteria, CA; and Helen Ruth Hansen of Colorado, CO; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents; husband Elwyn in 2004, Brother R. Wayne Smith in 2006, and Sister-in-law: Ardith Smith in 2008, Brothers-in-laws George Hansen & Hans Eugene Hansen. Funeral Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday September 4, 2012 at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Tom Wiles officiating. Burial will be at the North Platte Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday and Monday from 12:00 p.m. until 6 p.m. Adams & Swanson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
