Colfax County Man Charged With Felony Child Abuse

A 30-year-old Schuyler man arrested in connection with the death of a 14-month-old boy has been charged in Colfax District Court with felony child abuse.

Ricardo Rocha-Luna is set to be arraigned in Colfax County District Court on Sept. 5.

Police say officers were called to the house of Rocha-Luna and his girlfriend, Elizabeth Najar, on July 29 and found 14-month-old Angel Giron unresponsive. The toddler was taken to a local hospital, then flown to Omaha Children’s Hospital, where he died Aug. 1.

Doctors said the boy had suffered severe brain hemorrhaging and a skull fracture that could only have come from a car crash or violent shaking.

Police say Rocha-Luna was alone with the boy when his injuries occurred.

Rockies Lose Rain-Shortened Game (LISTEN LIVE TONIGHT on ESPN Radio 1410)

On a rainy day on the North Side of Chicago, the Colorado Rockies ended their seven-game road trip in defeat. The Rockies were blanked by the Cubs 5-0 in a game shortened to eight innings due to the inclement weather. Cubs starter Chris Volstad hadn’t won in any of his last 24 starts, but the Rockies made him look like a Cy Young candidate, mustering just three hits against him and four on the afternoon. Rockies starting pitcher Jhoulys Chacin took the hard-luck loss in his second start since coming off the DL, pitching five innings and allowing just one run while fanning three. The Rockies finish their seven-game trip with a 5-2 record. They’re back home tonight to open a six-game homestand against the new-look Los Angeles Dodgers. ESPN Radio 1410 has the call, with pregame coverage at 7:05 and the first pitch at 7:40.

Manning Tosses Pair of TD, Broncos Lose

Peyton Manning threw his first touchdown pass as a Denver Bronco, then added another for good measure in a 29-24 loss to the San Francisco Giants in preseason action at Sports Authority Field. Manning only played the first quarter but turned in his sharpest performance of the preseason by far, leading the Broncos to 17 points on his three drives. He connected on 10 of his 12 pass attempts for 122 yards and hooked up with Eric Decker on both scoring plays. Manning played turnover-free football for the first time in the preseason as well. The Broncos had a 24-10 lead at the half, but for the second straight week, the backups played poorly, getting outscored 19-0 in the second half. Denver wraps up their preseason schedule on Thursday night, traveling to Phoenix to take on the Arizona Cardinals.

Huskers Blank New Mexico at Husker Classic

Lincoln – Freshmen Jaylyn Odermann and Katie Kraeutner led the Nebraska soccer team (1-3-0) to its first win of the 2012 season on Sunday afternoon at the Nebraska Soccer Field with a 2-0 shutout of the New Mexico Lobos. Odermann notched both her first career goal and assist on the day, while Kraeutner added her first career goal.

On the box score it looked like an even game, but the Husker offense helped out its defense by keeping the ball in New Mexico territory for most of the afternoon. The Lobos were aggressive though when they crossed midfield with six shots on goal, but NU junior goalie Emma Stevens stopped every attempt to record her fourth career shutout.

Even though New Mexico got off 10 shots in the first half compared to four shots from Nebraska, the Lobos were unable to get on the board, as Stevens tallied four saves. The Huskers took a 1-0 lead into halftime on a the playmaking ability of Odermann and Kraeutner.

The Huskers broke the 0-0 tie at 38:34 when Odermann put a perfect pass into the box from nearly 40 yards out and Kraeutner timed her attack just right with a header for her first career goal.

Odermann then added a goal at the 55:15 mark in the second half on an assist from junior Stacy Bartels. With Bartels dribbling away from the goal, she slipped the ball to Odermann as she passed Bartels and the Lobos’ defender stayed with Bartels, leaving Odermann an open look from 15 yards away into the top right corner of the goal.

After playing its last three games in Lincoln, Nebraska hits the road next weekend for a pair of non-conference games. The Huskers first visit Waco, Texas, on Friday, Aug. 31, for a 7 p.m. with the Baylor Bears, before then traveling to Cincinnati, Ohio, for a Noon meeting with the Cincinnati Bearcats on Sunday, Sept. 2.

60 Years Young

NORTH PLATTE Neb.– Young and old found something to enjoy Sunday at the 60th annual St. Patrick Church barbecue. Started in 1952, the barbecue has been a consistently viable fundraising option for the Church.

The late-summer event has become one of North Platte’s signature events with proceeds going, in part, to help pay expenses at St. Patrick Middle-High School and McDaid Elementary. In fact, that is how the event started. As a way to pay for the then “new” St. Patrick School which has been erected in the late 1940’s at the present location on south Silber Avenue.

Those attending this year’s event enjoyed a beef barbecue dinner, with dessert. Youngster enjoyed the dunk tank, games, cake walk and a silent auction.

FOOTBALL: Week Zero Roundup

New season, new seniors, same old St. Patrick’s Irish. A devastating defensive performance led the Irish to a 28-0 victory over Kimball in their season opener. St. Pat’s eased to the win with several new faces getting their first starting opportunities.

This round belongs to the Wildcats. Maxwell defeated Brady 28-16 in their rivalry matchup in Maxwell. That makes it two straight wins for the Wildcats and two out of three since the rivalry was renewed after a brief hiatus.

The Wallace Wildcats did not kindly welcome South Platte back to eight-man football. It was a total rout in Wallace as the Wildcats hammered the visitors 68-6. For one night at least, Wallace’s offense lived up to it’s high-powered potential and made for a fun night for the home crowd.

The Swedes jumped out in front early and held on late for a 17-12 victory at Ogallala. That makes it two straight wins for the Swedes over the Indians, following their quadruple-OT win in the playoffs last year. Though Gothenburg doesn’t have much returning experience this year, their new players appear to have settled in nicely.
