FOOTBALL: Seven Turnovers Doom Dawgs in Opener

The North Platte Bulldogs went down to defeat in their season opener, losing to Norfolk 27-6 at Bauer Field at Memorial Stadium. The visiting Panthers scored the games first 20 points in the first quarter, and North Platte cost themselves several scoring chances by committing seven turnovers. Despite being -5 in the turnover margin, however, North Platte came up with some good defense after the first quarter to stay in the ballgame.

Dylon Mlady threw for 108 yards and a touchdown and ran for 44 yards to pace the North Platte offensive attack. Levi Tomlinson had an interception to highlight the Bulldogs’ defensive effort.

The Bulldogs head to Lincoln to take on Pius X next Friday. The Thunderbolts lost their opener to Kearney, 27-14.

In the second quarter, Dylon Mlady hooked up with Luke Volz for the Bulldogs’ first touchdown to cut the Panther lead to 20-6. Click the link below to listen to the Play of the Game.

North Platte Post’s parent company named ESOP company of the year

The parent company of the North Platte Post, Eagle Communications,  has been recognized as the 2013 Heart of America “ESOP Company of the Year.” The Heart of America ESOP Association presents this award annually to a company that embodies employee-ownership.

“We are honored to have received this award and to join the companies that have laid the foundation for what it means to be Company of the Year,” said Eagle Communications President and CEO Gary Shorman. “We were recognized for our internal and external promotion of ESOPs; the various ways we educate, share and participate in the ESOP throughout the year and our continuous involvement to stay connected in the communities we serve.”

Shorman also added, “An ESOP is better than just being a part of a team. It is being a part of a team that shares in the long-term growth and prosperity of a company. We have to work smart, hard, and fast, but the rewards of ownership are great. Having ownership in our company is the foundation for quality products and great customer service. We won this award because we have terrific employee-owners who work hard every day to provide great products for our listeners, viewers, and customers while providing the best customer service anywhere.”

An ESOP, or Employee Stock Ownership Plan, is designed so that each eligible employee shares in the ownership of a company. Each year, Eagle Communications allocates a percentage of its profits to the employee-owners, similar to a profit- sharing plan.

“For Eagle employees, this translates into owning a piece of the company as stock is transferred to each eligible employee in the ESOP program,” said Shorman. “Our company is valued each year based on our performance and since the inception of the ESOP, the value of Eagle’s stock has steadily increased.”

“The ESOP Company of the Year” recognizes a commitment to employee ownership as evidenced by involvement with the ESOP Association and its program, communication with employees, and commitment to the vision of The ESOP Association. That commitment endorses employee participation, wealth creation, and individual dignity and worth and an overall feeling of ownership by employees.

Eagle Communications, Inc. is a Kansas-based Broadband Services and Media Company with over 250 employee-owners. The company operates 28 radio stations in Kansas, Nebraska, and Missouri as well as cable TV systems in 30 Kansas and Colorado communities. The company also offers e-business solutions, web hosting, telephone service, high-speed Internet, and wireless Internet in most service areas. Ogalala Sioux Tribe sued alcohol stores

Activists who oppose beer sales in Whiteclay have taken their effort to Lincoln to draw attention to the tiny town that borders the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota where alcohol is banned but chronic alcohol abuse is rampant.

The Oglala Sioux Tribe has sued the town’s four beer stores and several distributors, saying they are knowingly contributing to alcoholism on the reservation.

Activists have tried to shutter Whiteclay for decades. They rallied at the Nebraska Capitol on Thursday.

Activist Charlotte Knoflicek told reporters that people continue to die and suffer.”

Whiteclay sold the equivalent of 4.3 million, 12-ounce cans of beer last year.

Tribal members plan a “Women’s March for Peace” on Sunday, which will begin on the Pine Ridge Reservation and end in Whiteclay.

Thursday Sports Wrap – Lance Armstrong to Be Stripped of Tours de France Titles

Armstrong giving up

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) – Lance Armstrong says it’s over – and the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency agrees.

The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency says it will strip Armstrong of his unprecedented seven Tour de France titles after he declared he was finished fighting the drug charges that threaten his legacy as one of the greatest cyclists of all time.

USADA’s chief executive, Travis Tygart, says Armstrong will also be hit with a lifetime ban.

Armstrong calls the USADA investigation an “unconstitutional witch hunt.”

The International Cycling Union has backed Armstrong’s legal challenge to USADA’s authority. Today in a statement, the UCI says only that it will wait for USADA’s explanation before commenting on the current situation.

The Tigers pulled within 1 1/2 games of the first-place Chicago White Sox in the AL Central.

Over in the NL:
