WY man charged with killing CO man found in NE

A Wyoming man convicted of killing a Colorado man whose body was found in western Nebraska has been sentenced to life in prison.

Vencil Ash III, of Cheyenne, Wyo., was convicted last month of first-degree murder in Kimball County District Court. The 41-year-old Ash was charged with killing Ryan Guitron, of Fort Collins, Colo., in 2003. Guitron’s remains were found at an abandoned farm near Bushnell in 2010.

Authorities believe Ash took Guitron to an abandoned farm, shot him and buried him in a woodpile.

Kelly Meehan, who told investigators of the crime, also was sentenced Wednesday to 20 months to five years in prison for being an accessory to the crime. The 24-year-old Meehan, of Fort Collins, Colo., would have been 15 when the shooting occurred.

Activist plan new effort to draw attention

Activists who oppose beer sales in Whiteclay are planning a new effort to draw attention to the Nebraska town, which borders a South Dakota Indian reservation where alcohol is banned.

The group has scheduled a rally Thursday at noon outside the Nebraska Capitol. Members of the Oglala Sioux Tribe are also planning a “Women’s March for Peace” on Sunday, which will begin on South Dakota’s Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and end in Whiteclay.

Organizers say the march will include members of Occupy Lincoln and the group Deep Green Resistance, which advocates for indigenous rights.

Activists have tried to shutter Whiteclay for decades, arguing that the town’s four beer stores knowingly contribute to alcoholism on Pine Ridge.

Local actors may have a chance to shine!

An Oscar-winning director is planning to shoot much of his new movie in Nebraska.

Alexander Payne, who directed “About Schmidt,” ”Sideways,” and “The Descendants,” said filming of his next movie — tentatively called “Nebraska” — will begin this October.

The movie will star Bruce Dern and Bill Forte in the story of a father and his estranged son travelling from Montana to Lincoln, Neb.

Payne says his production crew will be based in Norfolk during filming.

Payne is from Omaha and has shot parts of several other movies in the state.

Laurie Richards with the Nebraska Film Office says the film should provide an economic boost to the state because Payne plans to hire local actors and crews when possible.

Scottsbluff Police chief must pay 10k for resignation

The Scottsbluff City Council has approved an agreement for its police chief that provides $10,000 for resigning from the department.

Alex Moreno, who acknowledged an affair with a woman who later sued him and the city, resigned last week, effective Oct. 1.

In the agreement approved by the council on Monday, Moreno agreed to be a cooperative witness in all pending litigation. City Attorney Howard Olsen says as a city employee, Moreno would have been allowed due process rights and an appeal hearing if he had been terminated. The agreement includes a waiver of those rights or any claim he may have against the city.

Moreno acknowledged the affair with Tamara Villanueva in his response to the federal lawsuit she filed last year.

DJ LeMaiheu drove in the second run of the inning on a suicide squeeze. In the ninth, after the Mets had cut their lead to 3-2, the Rockies got an RBI single from Chris Nelson and a pinch-hit RBI double from Josh Rutledge. He’ll be joined on the rehab assignment by Jason Giambi, who has been out since July 24th with a viral infection. Neither player is expected to be activated until after rosters expand on September 1.
