FOOTBALL: Week One Preview

For what is believed to be the first time ever, North Platte takes on Lincoln Pius X tonight at Aldrich Field in Lincoln. Both teams are coming off opening losses – North Platte fell to Norfolk 27-6 while Pius X lost to Kearney 27-13. North Platte will hope to take better care of the football after turning the ball over six times in their opener. The Thunderbolts operate a power running attack and a versatile defense led by standout safeties Rex Raetz and Graham Ressiguie. (LISTEN LIVE to Bulldog football tonight on ESPN Radio 1410. Pregame coverage starts at 6:30 with the kickoff at 7.)

The Irish defense manhandled Kimball in their opening 28-0 win last week. Now they’ll look to show out for their home fans for the first time this year as Bridgeport comes calling. The visiting Bulldogs are also 1-0, having knocked off Dundy County-Stratton 18-0 last week.

The Hershey Panthers make their 2012 debut tonight as they trek to the panhandle to face Kimball. The Panthers have a senior class that is aiming to make a third straight playoff appearance for the first time in the program’s history. Their strength is in the offensive and defensive line, led by mountainous senior Logan Brown.

After knocking off rival Brady 28-16 last week, the Wildcats are faced with what should be another tough test tonight as they visit Arapahoe. The Warriors routed Franklin 48-13 in their opener last week and possess a fast-paced pistol offense which will hope to crack Maxwell’s experienced defense.

Wallace had an easy time with South Platte in their season opener last week, winning 68-6. Another one-sided affair could be on the docket for the Wildcats tonight as they travel to face Creek Valley. The Storm were beaten 72-14 by Potter-Dix last week. Wallace’s dual-threat quarterback John Marquart could be in for another big day.

The Sailors have dropped down to eight-man football this season, and will have a small and youthful roster to take their first cracks at the game this season. Tonight they host Overton, as good a program as there has been in eight man football in recent years. Overton is fresh off a 42-0 shutout of SMC last week.

Broncos Win Preseason Finale

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) – While Peyton Manning watched, Denver’s reserves pulled out a wild one in the desert.

Manning and the rest of the Broncos’ starters took the fourth game of the preseason off, and Denver got a 44-yard field goal from Matt Prater as the game ended to beat the Arizona Cardinals 16-13 on Thursday night.

Omar Bolden, a fourth-round draft pick from nearby Arizona State, returned a kickoff 103 yards for a touchdown to ignite a second-half comeback for Denver.

In contrast to the Broncos, Arizona used 10 starters on offense and 10 on defense in the game’s first few series. The Cardinals’ two candidates for starting quarterback, John Skelton and Kevin Kolb, did not play.

Cardinals first-round draft pick Michael Floyd made a spectacular 22-yard touchdown catch.

Huskers Eager to Start Season

The wait for Husker football ends tomorrow afternoon, when the 2012 edition of the Big Red emerges from the Memorial Stadium tunnel to face Southern Miss. Husker head coach Bo Pelini said after yesterday’s practice that both he and his team are raring to go. “It’s always a little nerve-racking: it’s the first time out, you have some new guys in there,” Pelini said.”Especially in this situation, where you don’t have a lot of information on your opponent. I’m excited for this football team. I know our guys are looking forward to playing. They’re tired of hitting each other. At the end of the day, it’s about playing hard, flying to the football and playing with an attitude. I think our guys understand that.” Nebraska’s previous meeting against the Golden Eagles was one to forget; a stunning 21-17 loss in Lincoln in 2004. But the Huskers haven’t lost a home opener in 26 years. Saturday’s is scheduled for 2:30.

VOLLEYBALL: Bulldogs Win One, Lose One in Sidney

The North Platte Bulldog volleyball team split the first two matches of their season at the Sidney triangular last night. In their first match, the Bulldogs topped the host Red Raiders 25-17, 24-26, 25-16. Their second match saw them fall in two sets to Ogallala, 18 and 18. Freshman Allison Kuenle tallied 11 kills in the two matches to lead the Bulldog attack, and sophomore Jessy Hunt racked up a combined six stuff blocks. The Bulldogs play in a double triangular at Lincoln Southwest this Saturday.

Rockies Begin Three-Game Set Against Padres

The Colorado Rockies continue their six-game homestand tonight as they open a three-game series against the San Diego Padres. They won 13 of those 20 games, but the Padres come in playing even better, having won nine of their last ten. Alex White will start on the mound for the Rockies, opposing Padres left-hander Clayton Richard. First pitch in Denver is set for 7:40.
