Sunday Sports Wrap – So Long to the Summer Games

LONDON (AP) – Goodbye, London. Hello, Rio. The Summer Olympics are over.

The Olympic flag has been handed from London to organizers of the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro.

London Mayor Boris Johnson handed the flag to IOC President Jacques Rogge, who then presented it to Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes. Rio will be the first city in South America to host the Olympics. The flag handover was one of the centerpiece moments of Sunday night’s closing ceremony of the London Games.

The final show had a little British pomp and a lot of British pop. It was a sensory blast that included the march of the athletes and musical performances by acts ranging from the Spice Girls to George Michael to the Who.

LONDON (AP) – United States athletes concluded one of the best showings in Olympic history, winning the London Olympics medal title and the gold medal crown as well. American athletics won 46 gold medals, the most ever for an Olympics not held in the U.S. Overall, American athletes are taking home 104 total medals. China was next with 87.

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. (AP) – Rory McIlroy won the PGA Championship, the last major of the PGA golf season, in a runaway. The Northern Irishman routed the field by a record eight strokes Sunday for his second major title.

McIlroy led throughout the final round at Kiawah Island, shooting a 6-under 66 and eclipsing Jack Nicklaus’ seven-shot victory in 1980.

McIlroy sank a 25-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole to break the record and finish at 13-under 275. David Lynn shot a 68 to finish a distant second.

McIlroy won the U.S. Open last year at Congressional in a similar runaway, beating Jason Day by eight strokes. Before McIlroy’s victory Sunday, the last 16 majors had been won by 16 players.

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (AP) – Marcos Ambrose passed Brad Keselowski on the final lap, then held him off in a fender-banging duel to win the Sprint Cup race at Watkins Glen International for the second straight time.

Kyle Busch was in control but was leaking oil on the track and skidded sideways coming out of the first turn of the final lap. Keselowski’s Dodge caromed off the side of the Busch’s Toyota and Ambrose followed Keselowski through.

Jimmie Johnson was third, followed by Sonoma winner Clint Bowyer and Sam Hornish Jr., giving Dodge two in the top five.

Money doesn’t grow on trees, but trees can grow from money!

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Grants are now available for communities that want to plant trees in Nebraska.

The Trees for Nebraska Towns program is accepting grant applications through Oct. 1, and roughly $200,000 is available this year. The program focuses on creating plant diversity and sustainable landscapes.

Grant coordinator Kendall Weyers says Nebraska communities have lost between 30 and 50 percent of their tree canopy to disease, insects, weather and other ailments over the last few decades. The grants seek to replenish those lost trees.

Projects must offer a clear public benefit to qualify, and must be located near or within a community’s incorporated limits. Possible sites include parks, schools, college campuses and courthouses.

Alarming news concerning food at Lincoln-Lancaster County Super Fair

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Health inspectors conducting food checks at the Lancaster County Super Fair this week found food being stored at unsafe temperatures and some unsanitary conditions.

The Lincoln Journal Star reports that the Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department inspection inside the fair buildings found corn dogs that weren’t being kept hot enough and meats in malfunctioning coolers that weren’t cold enough.

Joyce Jensen says the food in question was immediately thrown out.

Other violations included flies in food preparation areas, unclean surfaces and inaccurate thermometers, improperly washed fruits and vegetables.

The fair ends this weekend. No food-related illnesses from the fair have been reported.

State Senators ranch burns in North Platte

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (AP) — Not even Nebraska lawmakers are immune to record drought and the tinder-dry conditions across the state.

State Sen. Tom Hansen of North Platte found that out the hard way this weekend when part of  his ranch was scorched by wildfire.

The fire burned 60 to 80 acres of Hansen’s ranch near North Platte on Saturday.

Hansen’s wife, Linda, reported the fire around 4:15 p.m. Saturday.

The fire was quickly contained, and fire crews stayed on the scene dousing hot spots until about 9 p.m.

Magazine editor creates Omaha fishing guide

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An editor at Nebraskaland Magazine has researched and written a guide that focuses on where people can fish in and around Omaha.

The free, eight-page publication is called “Fishing the Metro: A Guide to Omaha’s Lakes and Waterways.” It was written by Nebraskaland associate editor Jeff Kurrus and includes a map and information on restrictions, facilities and the fish types at each location.

The publication was included in the July issue of Nebraskaland. It’s now available wherever fishing permits are sold in the Omaha area and at Nebraska Game and Parks Commission district offices and service centers.

Oak, Scotch Pine and Walnut trees may be diseased

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska Forest Service is preparing communities in the state for the possible onset of several pests and diseases, starting with an inventory and assessment of trees in North Platte.

The forest service and the city of North Platte began conducting an inventory of the city’s trees last week through the Community Threat Assessment Protocol, a program funded through a grant from the United States Forest Service.

Project coordinator Adam Smith said to local reports that the survey results could be back next spring, as the state prepares communities for the possible onset of diseases in ash trees, scotch pines and walnuts.

Local salons help with back to school fever!

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.- The back to school gig can be rough and very time consuming. Above all collecting school supplies and finishing the school supplies check list puts a dent in the wallet.  Two hair salons in North Platte offer a help to reduce the cost of the back to school season.

Hair salons A Cut Above and Trends both offered free haircuts to students of any age at the Episcopal Church of Our Savior in North Platte.

Reina Burk with A Cut Above says the salons wanted to do their part to help local parents with the rising back-to-school costs. That is exactly what they did. Hair cuts now range anywhere from $7 to 10$.
