Friday Sports Day – PGA Championship Underway

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. (AP) – After a mostly calm opening day, windy conditions greeted golfers for round two of the PGA Championship at Kiawah Island.

First-round leader Carl Pettersson doesn’t tee off until this afternoon. The Swede fired a 6-under-par 66 and began the day with a one-stroke lead over a group of four golfers headed by Rory McIlroy.

Tiger Woods began the day three shots off the pace.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) – Jonathan Vilma has returned to federal court in New Orleans today, where a judge will hear arguments on the NFL’s motion to dismiss the Saints linebacker’s lawsuit seeking to overturn his bounty suspension.

It’s not clear when U.S. District Judge Ginger Berrigan will rule. If she doesn’t dismiss the lawsuit, she could potentially rule on Vilma’s request to be allowed to temporarily return to the Saints while the case proceeds.

Roger Goodell has suspended Vilma for the entire 2012 season. The NFL commissioner says the veteran linebacker was one of the ringleaders of a program that offered Saints defenders improper cash bonuses for injuring opponents.

Vilma, several teammates and Saints assistant head coach Joe Vitt have testified that Vilma never paid or accepted money for injuring another player.

LONDON (AP) – The IOC has formally stripped American cyclist Tyler Hamilton of his gold medal from the 2004 Athens Olympics.

The first-place prize now goes to Russian rider Viatcheslav Ekimov. American Bobby Julich will be moved up from bronze to silver, and Michael Rogers of Australia from fourth to bronze.

After years of denials, Hamilton told CBS’s “60 Minutes” last year that he had repeatedly used performance-enhancing drugs. The IOC asked for documents from the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency before reallocating the medals.

Thursday Sports Wrap – Dwight Howard Saga Finally Over

UNDATED (AP)- The Los Angeles Lakers have a deal in place to acquire Dwight Howard from Orlando in a four-team, eight-player trade also involving Denver and Philadelphia. The NBA has scheduled a conference call Friday with the four general managers to finish the deal, according to multiple reports.

Philadelphia would get Andrew Bynum from Los Angeles and Jason Rchardson from Orlando, while Denver would get Andre Iguodala from the 76ers.

Orlando would receive Arron Afflalo and Al Harrington from Denver, Nikola Vucevic and Moe Harkless from Philadelphia, and lottery protected first-round picks from each of the three teams.

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. (AP) – The first round of the PGA Championship is winding down and the leader is Carl Pettersson (PEHT’-ur-sihn). He opened with a 6-under-66 to lead Gary Woodland, Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano, Alex Noren and Rory McIlroy by one stroke.

Tiger Woods completed his round with a 3-under-69, while John Daly shot a 68.

This is the final major tournament of the year.

NEW YORK (AP) – NHL commissioner Gary Bettman says the league is prepared to lock out its players if a new collective bargaining agreement is not reached by Sept. 15, when the current deal expires. Bettman says time is running out and that the league reminded the NHL Players’ Association during talks today that owners are not prepared to enter a new season under the current deal.

NHLPA executive director Don Fehr (feer) has maintained the two sides can continue discussions beyond Sept. 15, and there is no need for the league to lock out its players.

U of N Medical center find questioning unusual

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — University of Nebraska Medical Center officials say it’s unusual for the integrity of a research study to be questioned, but they don’t know yet if there is a problem.

Sheila Wrobel is chief compliance officer at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. She says the 60-day inquiry that began in late July will determine whether a full investigation is warranted.

The initial inquiry could also confirm the validity of the research.

Wrobel says the university has an obligation to check out the allegations and make sure the science is valid.

The American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine raised questions about a study it published online in February. The study was done jointly by UNMC and researchers from Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia.
