Firefighters in Ogallala have wildfires nearly contained , blackened nearly 78 square miles

OGALLALA, Neb. (AP) — Firefighters have Western Nebraska wildfires nearly contained, but will be watching the skies for lightning that could spark more fires on the tinder-dry terrain.

Officials believe lightning started the five Keith County fires near Lake McConaughy at Ogallala on Thursday.

Three of the fires burned out of control Friday, but Nebraska Emergency Management Agency spokeswoman Jodie Fawl says at least one of the fires had been completely extinguished by Saturday, and two others were 100 percent contained.

A fire north of Brule is 75 percent to 80 percent contained, and another in northeastern Keith and southwest McPherson counties is 90 percent contained.

The wildfires have blackened more than 78 square miles. One firefighter suffered heat exhaustion Friday, but no other injuries or structure fires have been reported.

Norfolk man to compete in the Olympic pole vault Wednesday

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska native Jeremy Scott is getting ready to compete for an Olympic medal in the pole vault this week.

Scott, who grew up in Norfolk, Neb., believes he has a shot at a medal in the competition that starts Wednesday.

Scott didn’t even start pole vaulting until he was 16.

The 31-year-old has spent nine years training with Bell Athletics in Jonesboro, Ark. That means he already knows several teammates because one of the other male pole vaulters and two women who are competing in the event also train with Earl Bell.

Scott says his training has helped him go from clearing 15-feet-2-inches in high school in 1999 to win the state tournament to clearing 19-feet-1¼-inches in a recent meet.

Missing Colorado mans body found in Lake McConaughy

OGALLALA, Neb. (AP) — Authorities have recovered the body of Colorado man who had been missing since Friday at Lake McConaughy in western Nebraska.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission says the 36-year-old man’s body was found around 9:45 a.m. Sunday.

The man was last seen paddling a raft when it capsized during a thunderstorm and he disappeared. His name was not immediately released.

In a separate incident Friday, 69-year-old Dwight Hatch, of Ogallala, was hurt when he was trapped between two beached boats. Hatch was treated and released from a local hospital.

State officials say there have now been five deaths in 33 boating accidents in Nebraska this year.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Alegent Health says it plans to rename its company after it acquires Creighton University’s hospital and clinics in Omaha.

Alegent said Sunday that on Sept. 1 it will become Alegent Creighton Health. And the company’s network of clinics around the city will be called Alegent Creighton Clinics.

Rockies End Disastrous Homestand in Defeat (LISTEN LIVE TONIGHT on ESPN Radio 1410)

The Colorado Rockies concluded one of the worst homestands in franchise history with an 8-3 loss to the San Francisco Giants at Coors Field yesterday. It was the Rockies’ eighth loss on their nine-game home stretch. As is their wont, the Rockies fell behind early, as the Giants scored twice in the first inning without the benefit of a hit. Jordan Pacheco’s RBI single in the bottom of the first made it 2-1, but the Giants gradually stretched their lead. The visitors scored once in the fourth, once in the fifth, three times in the seventh and once more in the ninth to leave no doubt. The Rockies head out on the road tonight to open a six-game road swing with the first of three games against the Los Angeles Dodgers. ESPN Radio 1410 has the action from Chavez Ravine, with pregame coverage at 8:30 and the first pitch at 9:10.

Broncos Training Camp Update – RB Fannin Out For Season, S/PR Leonhard Signed

The Denver Broncos’ running-back depth took a hit during their first intersquad scrimmage at Sports Authority Field on Saturday. Mario Fannin suffered a torn Achillies tendon, ending his season. Fannin tore his ACL in training camp last year and missed all of 2011, but had a chance to make the practice squad this season before his latest injury. The Broncos did add to their depth in the secondary with a free-agent signing over the weekend. Eight-year veteran safety Jim Leonhard agreed to a deal with the Broncos. He’ll be placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list while he completes his rehab from a torn ACL that cost him the end of the 2011 season, but once healthy, Leonhard provides a veteran presence in a youthful safety corps. The former Bill, Raven and Jet could also have an opportunity to return punts for the Broncos.
