No arrests or charges have been made in the death, which is still under investigation.

Police struggle with a man making terroristic threats for nine hours, originally over toy gun

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A 28-year-old Lincoln man is behind bars after police say he held them at bay for nine hours.

Police were called to a Lincoln home Thursday afternoon for a man pointing a gun out of a window. Officer Katie Flood says that when police arrived, Damien Brown climbed out of a second-floor window and threatened officers with a knife and a screwdriver. Flood says he jumped onto a neighbor’s roof, where he stayed until surrendering around 1 a.m. Friday.

Brown was arrested on suspicion of making terroristic threats, using a weapon to commit a felony, trespassing and obstructing government operations. Police say after his arrest, a toy gun was found in his house.

Brown remained jailed Saturday and could not be reached for comment.

Olympic Update – Day Nine

The action in the pool comes to a close, while the action on the track heats up today in London. The final medal events in swimming are the men’s 1500 free, the women’s 50 meter free, and the men’s and women’s 4×100 medley relay. The highlight at Olympic Stadium tonight will be the women’s 100 meter dash. American’s Carmelita Jeter and Allyson Felix are expected to contend for gold. Also in action today, the American team of Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh Jennings in women’s beach volleyball in a quarterfinal match, and USA men’s basketball, looking to move to 4-0 as they take on Lithuania.

(Source:https://travelphotobase.com)

North Platte, Neb. (NORTH PLATTE POST)– Hotel  Pawnee also known as Pawnee Assisted Living of 221 E 5th St in North Platte received a complaint filled against them from the Office of the Attorney General of Nebraska filed at the Lincoln County District Court Thursday August 2nd.

According to the complaint Hotel Pawnee has been operating without workers compensation insurance coverage. With up to 34 people employed at the Hotel  Pawnee they are in direct violation of the Nebraska’s Workers compensation Act.

Hotel Pawnee’s workers compensation insurance has been canceled as of November 26th of 2010. That’s a total of 613 days as of August 2nd that employees of the Hotel Pawnee have been without workers compensation insurance putting all employees in immediate risk if an employee were to be injured on the job. That employee would not receive any payment from the employer to cover medical bills. One employee within the 613 days has reported a work related injury.

On December 10th 2010 and once more on January 10 2011 the Workers Compensation Court asked Hotel Pawnee to provide business, employee and proof of workers compensation insurance.

As result of the absence of workers compensation insurance Hotel Pawnee is asked in the complaint by the AG not to run business in the state of Nebraska, also Hotel Pawnee must pay a penalty of $1,000 for each day it has operated without workers compensation insurance, totaling to over $600,000.

Governor Heineman Tours Tongji University and Participates in Agreement with UNMC

(Shanghai, China) Gov. Dave Heineman today finalized an agreement between the University of Nebraska Medical Center and Tongji University to create one of the most extensive partnerships ever between U.S. and Chinese academic institutions. The Shanghai-U.S. Health Science Initiative (SSUHSI) is a collaborative health science partnership that involves educational, clinical and research components.

“This is truly a momentous occasion,” said Gov. Heineman. “To be a competitive force in today’s world, it is absolutely vital to have global partnerships. I am thrilled that these two great institutions have come together in this initiative. It will pay tremendous dividends for generations to come.”

The agreement will involve six different disciplines – medicine, physical therapy/rehabilitation, nursing, dentistry, public health and pharmacy, and will provide a myriad of new opportunities for students and faculty.

UNMC Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D., and Gang Pei, Ph.D., President of Tongji University, were the chief architects of the partnership with Jialin C. Zheng, M.D., Professor of Pharmacology and Experimental Neurosciences and Assistant Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Associate Dean for Graduate Studies for UNMC, serving as the key intermediary between the two universities.

Other UNMC participants attending the ceremony will include: Jennifer Larsen, M.D., Vice Chancellor for Research; Bradley Britigan, M.D., Dean of the College of Medicine; and Michael Dixon, Ph.D., President of UNeMed, UNMC’s technology transfer company.

“UNMC is our No. 1 collaborator,” said Dr. Pei, who received an honorary doctorate degree from UNMC in May. “It is like family.”

The partnership elevates UNMC’s stature in China to a whole new level. “We have been working very hard over the past eight years to establish our university in China,” said Dr. Maurer. “This initiative is a transforming event that puts UNMC in an elite class among U.S. universities with a strong presence in China.”

Some of the key elements of the initiative include:

  • ·         Development of a family medicine training program tailored to the needs of China and enhancing family medicine collaboration between the U.S. and China;
  • ·         Development of a Research Collaborative Center that will focus primarily on research dealing with stem cells, Nano medicine, neuroscience and oncology;
  • ·         Hospital administration training through UNMC’s hospital partner, The Nebraska Medical Center;
  • ·         Up to 10 Chinese students annually will come to UNMC to seek doctoral degrees in medicine, physical therapy, pharmacy, nursing, dentistry and public health (or a master’s degree in public health) or do their medical residency training. These students will be financially supported by the China Scholarship Council (CSC);
  • ·         Health science students from UNMC would be offered the opportunity to be trained in China with educational experiences and clinical rotations coordinated through the initiative; and
  • ·         Development of a collaborative training program for American and Chinese students enrolled in Tongji Medical School. UNMC faculty members will help with the curriculum development and integration. Medical students would receive clinical training in the six affiliate hospitals of Tongji University.

“This initiative has the potential of being quite innovative in several areas,” said Dr. Zheng. “China’s educational programs for physical therapists and pharmacists are lacking in comparison to U.S. programs. Additionally, China currently does not have a well-designed residency program for new physicians.” He noted that the city of Shanghai just pioneered a residency program a couple years ago.

“We want to continue this important work, and we want to do it right,” added Dr. Zheng. “By doing so, we hope to make it a model for all of China.”

Starting in August, two Chinese medical students will be enrolled in medical school at UNMC. Dr. Zheng said it will be the first time ever that the Chinese government (CSC) has funded medical training in the U.S. for Chinese students.

Friday Sports Day – Pro Football Hall of Fame Weekend in Canton Has Arrived

CANTON, Ohio (AP) – They blocked and tackled and got lost in those scrums at the line of scrimmage, overshadowed by the guys who handled the ball and got the moments of glory.

It all changes in Canton this weekend, when linemen are the stars of the NFL’s most prestigious event.

Four linemen will be among the six players inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday night – Chris Doleman, Cortez Kennedy, Willie Roaf and Dermontti Dawson. Running back Curtis Martin and cornerback Jack Butler will join them.

The weekend took a hit last year when the Hall of Fame game had to be called off because of the NFL lockout. It’s back this year, with the Saints and the Cardinals playing in the preseason opener on Sunday night.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) – An official at the University of Illinois tells The Associated Press that Penn State offensive lineman Ryan Nowicki will transfer to Illinois.

The redshirt freshman is in the process of completing the necessary paperwork, according to the official who spoke Friday on condition of anonymity because Nowicki’s move has not been announced by either school.

The 6-foot-5, 280-pound Nowicki will be the eighth player to leave Penn State following NCAA sanctions imposed last month after the Jerry Sandusky child sex-abuse scandal. Nittany Lion players are allowed to transfer and play elsewhere right away.

Nowicki has four seasons of eligibility left.

Illinois assistant coaches drew criticism for traveling to State College, Pa., immediately following the sanctions.

NEW YORK (AP) – The Facebook pages of the New York Yankees, Chicago Cubs and several other Major League Baseball clubs have been restored after briefly being hacked.

On the Yankees official news feed Thursday, there was a false item about Derek Jeter undergoing a sex change. The Cubs’ page contained an expletive directed at longtime Cubs fan and actor Bill Murray. The posts were removed shortly after appearing.

MLB released a statement saying “for a brief moment today, a few MLB Club Facebook accounts were hacked and inappropriate material was briefly on display.” The league also said it is working with Facebook and legal authorities to determine what happened.

The pages of the Miami Marlins, San Diego Padres, Washington Nationals, San Francisco Giants and Chicago White Sox were also hacked.
