The beat goes on at Whistle Stop with Latin Jam

Each Saturday, the Whistle Stop Outdoor Market offers a new experience in entertainment and creativity.

This week, August 4, Latin Jam, a local seven-piece band, that includes a drum, three guitars, saxophone and two keyboards, will provide a lively musical fest at the market located at the Garden Glove Garden Center, 1800 E. 12th Street.

Among the more than 35 vendors have signed up to display a variety of wares are:

  • ·         Glass Painter Sandra Baumgartner, who uses an “alcohol paint” technique that she learned from the internet. Although she’s only been creating her art for a few months, she’s quickly gotten the knack and has numerous pieces. She’s also willing to “reface your vase” in whatever colors you want.
  • ·         Crafter Jessica Martinez, who initially started by creating colorful bibs and unusual “crinkle toys” for babies, has expanded to include handmade tote bags, pillowcase dresses for little girls other fun items.
  • ·         Among the many great bakers is Lisa Girard who creates buttermilk and blueberry coffee cakes, cinnamon rolls and other baked items. Other choices at the market include yummy jams and jellies, candies, homemade tortillas, salsas, tamales and burritos.
  • ·         At his booth, Tim O’Neill, a local artist who sells his work internationally, offers prints of his works and demonstrates his silk screen painting skills.
  • ·         And, of course, the variety of fresh produce keeps getting more abundant.

Another special feature this week is a drawing for a $40 gift certificate from Sandhills Ranchers Beef, a company that markets locally-raised beef with no artificial hormones or animal by-products.

The market, which is open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., provides coffee and rolls with seating provided. Attendees also are invited to bring their own lawn chairs.

The market is an opportunity for area musicians, artists, writers, and crafters to showcase their talent and wares as well as a way for individuals and organizations to sell approved items and promote fundraising projects. To learn more about getting involved, contact Hope Hunt, 308 221-2015. Visit the website at whistlestopmarket.com.

The Whistle Stop Outdoor Market is a non-profit project sponsored by the Original Town Association and Garden Glove Garden Center.

Thursday Sports Wrap – Mystery Woman Crashed Opening Ceremony, Is Sorry

NEW DELHI (AP) – India’s Olympic mystery woman has apologized for gatecrashing the opening ceremony in London and walking at the head of her country’s confused delegation.

Madhura Nagendra told India’s NDTV news channel she made an “error in judgment” when she marched alongside Indian flag-bearer Sushil Kumar at the head of the delegation of 40 athletes.

Her Olympic cameo infuriated Indian officials who demanded an explanation of how she was allowed into the parade of athletes.

Nagendra said she was part of the opening ceremony cast and did not breach security. She said she got caught up in the chaos and excitement of the moment and ended up leading the delegation around the stadium.

BEREA, Ohio (AP) – The new owner of the Cleveland Browns is watching his first practice.

Tennessee truck-stop magnate Jimmy Haslam III walked to the middle of the field Friday with team president Mike Holmgren and general manager Tom Heckert for his first glimpse at what $1 billion can buy. Haslam was wearing shorts on a hot, humid morning.

Randy Lerner reached a deal Thursday to sell the club to Haslam, a minority stockholder in the rival Steelers. Haslam must divest his interest in the Steelers and also gain approval for the purchase from the NFL.

Haslam promised Lerner the franchise won’t be relocated. Haslam arrived in Cleveland late Thursday and dined with Holmgren.

Man responsible for death of one and wounding another has charges dropped for plea deal, 20 years in prison

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A Lincoln man charged with fatally stabbing one man and wounding another has made a plea deal for a lesser charge.

The Lincoln Journal Star reports that Angelo Pedrosa pleaded no contest on Thursday to manslaughter.

Pedrosa had been charged with murder, assault and two weapons counts in the slaying of 29-year-old Peter Hardy and stabbing of Donnie Rodgers in Lincoln on Sept. 19. The other charges were dropped in exchange for Pedrosa’s plea.

Prosecutors say a fight erupted when Pedrosa went into the basement of a Lincoln house to look for a woman who owed him money for drugs. She wasn’t there, but Hardy, Rodgers and another man confronted Pedrosa.

Pedrosa faces up to 20 years in prison when he’s sentenced next month.

Man dies after rear-ending an ambulance on I-80

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say a 54-year-old man has died after his car ran into the back of an ambulance on Interstate 80 in southeast Nebraska.

The Nebraska State Patrol identified the victim as Paul Chatfield, of Seward.

The Lincoln Journal Star reports that Chatfield was headed west on the interstate Thursday when his car hit the back of the ambulance, which had slowed for traffic.

Patrol spokeswoman Deb Collins says the ambulance wasn’t hauling a patient and that the ambulance driver and passenger weren’t injured.

Red Cross in need of blood, be one of the three!

NORTH PLATTE NEB.(RED CROSS)-As summer winds down, the hustle and bustle of families falling back into school and work routines begin. The American Red Cross reminds eligible donors to keep blood donation in their routine and add “help save lives” to their to-do lists. At least three extra donors at all August blood drives, above what’s currently expected, are critically needed for the Red Cross to readily meet hospital and patient needs this month and into the fall.

Eligible donors can give blood every 56 days, yet the average blood donor gives blood less than two times per year. Help the Red Cross ensure an adequate blood supply leading into the Labor Day holiday weekend by making an appointment to donate blood.

The American Red Cross Live Life. Give Life. summer-long campaign is helping to raise awareness about the constant need for blood and encourage regular donations. Visit redcrossblood.org/GiveWin to learn how to win one of many GiftCertificates.com prize packages.
How to Donate Blood

Simply call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit redcrossblood.org to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license, or two other forms of identification are required at check-in.  Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental permission in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

About the American Red Cross

The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies more than 40 percent of the nation’s blood; teaches skills that save lives; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a not-for-profit organization that depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission. Warren Buffett’s company releasing second quarter earnings this afternoon

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Warren Buffett’s company will release its second-quarter earnings report on Friday afternoon.

Investors will also be looking for clues about what Buffett might invest in next and whether the economy will improve because Berkshire Hathaway’s results offer a glimpse into an assortment of industries.

The bottom line profit Berkshire reports on Friday is likely to be hurt by the paper value of its derivatives that are tied to several stock-market indexes.

The true value of the derivatives won’t be clear for at least several years, because they don’t mature until nearly a decade from now. But Berkshire is required to estimate their value every time the company reports earnings.
