Just to let you know, you’ve been filling your ketchup dips wrong

Kris Allen

It’s OK! I have to for the past 21 years iv’e been crawling this planet. I was surfing the jungle we call internet and read a post from a blogging site, and I immediately felt that I had to share this with everyone.

It turns out the cute little cups are made to fan out (explaining the design) so you have have a much wider circumferential  dipping radius.

This is great news to me, because I always felt that when I wanted tip an oddly shaped food into my ketchup, my world would collapse because i either got too much or id have to squeeze the paper cup.

Overall this turns out to be one of the many things that most people just don’t think about because in today’s world every thing is made to fit.

Who ever invented the little paper cups is a jerk for not publicizing this little secret.

“Ha! No no..just leave that part out…they’ll figure it out eventually..”

Well hey now you know and the world is just a little bit more of a better place!

Apartment fire overnight shatters living situation for apartment residents

Though some may say the rain we received last Wednesday night was a blessing, for the residents living in the house apartment building on 12th St and Poplar, it became a nightmare.

A structure fire lit the attic into a blaze of the apartment, a passing local called in the report of the fire at 11:30 last night.

The fire was contained  around 1:30 AM. The fire was located in hard to reach areas, the house suffers water damage, making the house unable to live in.

No one was home at the time, no injuries reported.

The house style apartment is separated to four floors with a living situation in the basement, ground level, upper level and the next up is the attic.

The cause of the fire is unknown but with the storm Wednesday night the suspected cause is lighting, though it  is not confirmed.

Letters To The Post: Sheldon Statewide Coming to North Platte

Railroads and the Making of Modern Americ a coming to North Platte

Exhibition open M-F, 9-5:00 or by appointment. SEPTEMBER 28 – OCTOBER 26 FOR TOURS

This year’s exhibition, “Railroads and the Making of Modern America” is organized by William Thomas, John and Catherine Angle Chair in the Humanities and Professor of History at UNL and is on view at the Sheldon Museum of Art until May 27, 2012. It will then travel to greater Nebraska. Occurring on the 150th anniversary of the Homestead Act, the Morrill Act, and the Pacific Railway Act the exhibition provides the opportunity for discussion of these important pieces of legislation that helped shape Nebraska. From the 19th century onward the railway became a political force that altered the American landscape and shaped economic growth. Railroads played a vital role in reconfiguring the country’s understanding of time and space and American’s relationship towards nature. The railroad’s significance to Nebraska is reflected in the state’s curriculum. The exhibition allows for connections to be made to the social studies framework. Railroads are included in the 8th grade standards under “time”, “continuity”, and “change” with a proposed analysis of railroad construction. The exhibition is an ideal way to foster interdisciplinary connections between art and history curriculums.

Gov. Heineman Announces Nebraska’s First China Trade Office

(Shanghai, CHINA) Gov. Dave Heineman today signed an agreement to open Nebraska’s first trade office in China. The Nebraska Center – Shanghai, will be a vital element to the continuing development of Nebraska-China relations.

“Today we established our second overseas trade office in cooperation with the Shanghai Small to Medium Enterprises Center for International Cooperation,” said Gov. Heineman. “This office will help Nebraska foster and further Nebraska-China relations in a variety of key areas including trade, economic development and education. We look forward to continuing this relationship as we continue to grow our presence in China and build even more mutually-beneficial relationships.”

The agreement was made with the Shanghai Small to Medium Enterprises (SME) Center for International Cooperation. The SME Center is a large, Chinese quasi-governmental organization located in Shanghai with over 300,000 members involved with international trade and investment. The SME Center has been an economic development partner in China since signing a memorandum of understanding during Nebraska’s first Reverse Trade Mission in 2008. Since that time, SME has introduced many Shanghai area companies to Nebraska to look at trade and investment opportunities.

The relationship between the State of Nebraska and the SME Center is already providing results. Since signing a memorandum of understanding that took effect during the first Reverse Trade Mission to Nebraska in 2008, Mr. Robert Cai, Director of the SME Center, has introduced many companies to Nebraska to look at trade and investment opportunities.

Mr. Cai brought officials from Qinqiang to the first Nebraska Reverse Trade Mission in 2008, and again to the second Nebraska Reverse Trade Mission in 2011. Under the leadership of Ms. Jingjing Lu, this agribusiness company chose to incorporate an American subsidiary corporation in Nebraska, citing Nebraska’s business and family friendly climate as reasons for choosing Nebraska.

Ms. Lu’s company is a subsidiary of New Hope, which is China’s largest privately owned agricultural conglomerate and parent corporation to the publicly listed Sichuan New Hope Agribusiness Company.

Citing successes like Ms. Lu’s company, Qinqiang, Gov. Heineman stated, “With a permanent trade office in China, we look forward to showing more companies that Nebraska is open for business.”

Nebraska and China have benefited greatly from increased global commerce and bilateral trade.  Over the last four years, Nebraska had 29 international investments from 12 countries. These investments totaled more than $4.17 billion, creating more than 1,400 jobs in Nebraska. China has been the second most active investor over the past three years with six new investments in Nebraska.

Noting the importance to Nebraska’s economy from both Nebraska and foreign investors, this will be the second overseas trade office Gov. Heineman has established. In 2006, the Governor opened the Nebraska Center – Tokyo, which has been a key partner to the Department of Economic Development in recruiting Japanese companies and helping Nebraska companies do business in Japan.

Gov. Heineman is in China on the third leg of a trade mission that has also traveled to Beijing, and Xi’an.

Legendary Steam Locomotive Celebrates Union Pacific’s 150th Anniversary

Omaha, Neb., August 1, 2012 – Legendary steam locomotive No. 844 is on the fourth leg of the UP 150 Express, a multi-segment tour celebrating Union Pacific’s 150th anniversary, and sharing the company’s rich history with the communities it serves.

Visitors can step inside Union Pacific’s vintage Promontory baggage car that has been transformed into a state-of-the-art traveling museum. The traveling exhibit closely replicates the full-scale Building America exhibit that opened earlier this year at the Union Pacific Railroad Museum in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

The traveling exhibit takes visitors back in time using the latest interactive touch screen technology to illustrate how Union Pacific supported communities as they were established along the way as the transcontinental railroad was built. The interactive experience culminates with the modern Union Pacific Railroad, which transports goods American businesses and consumers use every day.

No. 844 will pull the traveling exhibit 13,000 miles through 15 states as part of Union Pacific’s 150th anniversary celebration. The tour makes its next stop in Des Moines to be part of the Iowa State Fair activities and will be on display August 9 – 12.

“Our 150th anniversary is a milestone that provides us with the opportunity to thank our communities for supporting Union Pacific,” said Robert W. Turner, senior vice president – Corporate Relations for Union Pacific. “We are happy to celebrate our past and look forward to continuing to meet America’s freight transportation needs.”

Known as the Living Legend, No. 844 is scheduled to make overnight stops with stationary displays along the route before arriving back in Cheyenne, Wyo., August 19. The fifth segment of the UP 150 Express will be heading to the Nebraska State Fair in Grand Island and will be on display, Aug. 31 – Sept. 3. Other community displays are planned throughout the year in several other cities in the following states:

  • California
  • Idaho
  • Iowa
  • Nebraska
  • Oregon

Interactive Timeline

Rail enthusiasts, Abraham Lincoln fans, students, history buffs and employees will enjoy visiting the railroad’s interactive and resplendent historical timeline published at www.up150.com.  Combining history and high-tech, the timeline highlights in detail 60 milestones in Union Pacific’s history and features more than 100 photos from Union Pacific’s archives.

Union Pacific Steam Locomotive No. 844

Steam Locomotive No. 844 is the last steam locomotive built for Union Pacific Railroad. It was delivered in 1944. A high-speed passenger engine, it pulled such widely known trains as the Overland Limited, Los Angeles Limited, Portland Rose and Challenger. When diesels took over all of the passenger train duties, No. 844 was placed in freight service in Nebraska between 1957 and 1959. It was saved from being scrapped in 1960 and held for special service.

The engine has run hundreds of thousands of miles as Union Pacific’s ambassador of goodwill.  It has made appearances at Expo ’74 in Spokane, the 1981 opening of the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento, the 1984 World’s Fair in New Orleans and the 50th Anniversary Celebration of Los Angeles Union Station in 1989. During the 1990s, No. 844 pulled numerous Denver Post Cheyenne Frontier Days special trains and visited several Oklahoma cities during the Oklahoma Centennial in 2007.  In 2010, No. 844 traveled to Harlingen, Texas, and Milliken, Colo., to be a part of heritage celebrations in those communities.
