Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Bob Kerrey is seeking to secure a date for a televised debate — with someone other than his Republican opponent.
Kerrey has for weeks taken GOP U.S. Senate candidate Deb Fischer to task for not accepting an invitation from Fox News for the two to debate. On Wednesday, Kerrey sent a letter to “Fox News Sunday” host Chris Wallace offering to appear even if Fischer won’t. Kerrey proposes instead to debate anti-tax activist Grover Norquist, noting that Fischer has signed Norquist’s pledge to not raise taxes.
Fischer’s campaign spokesman, Daniel Keylin, responded he finds it interesting that Kerrey hasn’t criticized Sen. Ben Nelson for signing the same pledge, and that Kerrey “is clearly trying to deflect attention from his taxing record.”
An Omaha man has been sentenced to nine months in federal prison for his unauthorized use of a military-issued gas card.
United States Attorney Deborah Gilg says that 32-year-old Terrell Smith was sentenced Wednesday in Lincoln federal court for use of an unauthorized access device. He must also pay restitution of nearly $23,000.
Federal authorities say the Nebraska Air National Guard noticed in October that the credit card assigned to a National Guard recruiter was being used at gas stations in north Omaha and Council Bluffs, Iowa, to buy large quantities of gas.
The FBI and General Services Administration determined that Smith repeatedly used the card to put $22,882 worth of gas into his car and into the cars of friends.

The visitors have dynamic playmakers at running back in Kendrick Hardy and at wide receiver in Tracy Lampley. The Huskers expect to play in a nickel defensive package almost exclusively, with Ciante Evans manning the nickel back position.

The Denver Broncos wrap up their preseason schedule tonight in Phoenix against the Arizona Cardinals. ESPN Radio 1410 has the broadcast of tonight’s game. Pregame coverage starts at 8:05 with the kickoff at 10.
A nine-run deficit proved too much to overcome for the Colorado Rockies, who were denied a sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers in a 10-8 loss at Coors Field yesterday. The Rockies rallied for seven runs in the eighth inning after falling behind 10-1, but they would get no closer. Chris Nelson had three hits and Tyler Colvin drove in two runs to lead the Rockies offensively. The Rockies have an off day today after playing 20 games in 20 days, and going 13-7 in that stretch. They open a three-game home series against San Diego on Friday night.

Hunter Spanjer is a 3-year-old deaf preschooler in Grand Island, Nebraska and School officials have complained that the deaf boy’s sign name – “Hunter” – resembles a gun. They want him to change the sign for his name, because his sign language name could be confused for a gun by other children.
Hunter’s father, Brian Spanjer, says, “He’s deaf, and his sign name, they say, is a violation of their weapons policy.
