Huskers Continue Preparation for Southern Miss

Lincoln — The Nebraska football team continued their preparations for its season opener against Southern Miss with a practice that lasted just over two hours at the Ed and Joyanne Gass Practice Fields in full pads Tuesday afternoon.

Defensive Coordinator John Papuchis met with media after practice to discuss his biggest concerns with this Saturday’s game.

“One is the unknown,” Papuchis said.” Obviously, they’ve prepared during this offseason and throughout fall camp on an offense, and we don’t know a hundred percent what they are going to do.  Besides that, they’re a good football team. They’re really athletic and their skill guys are really talented. I think across the board they’re pretty good on offense, and we expect a good football team to come in here.”

However talented the opponent may be, Coach Papuchis stressed that the focus of this year’s Nebraska defense will be to attack.

“We want to get out of the mindset that offenses dictate us, either by tempo, by personnel, or by what they’re doing schematically,” Papuchis said. “We want to get back to dictating them. Sometimes that’s easier said than done, but that’s been the emphasis this offseason.”

A large part of the attacking mentality is finishing, an area that could use improvement this year. Coach Papuchis addressed the importance of stopping opposing offenses on third down situations this season, as Husker opponents were successful on 40 percent of third-down situations in 2010 after converting only 32 percent of those situations in 2010.

“As coaches, we reiterate what the situation is and players echo, ‘Hey, it’s third down, let’s get off the field.’ We evaluate and scrutinize that aspect of practice as a group a lot,” Papuchis said. When asked about last year’s performance in that area, he simply replied, “Obviously we have to get better at third downs if we want to be the football team we want to be.”

Nebraska will continue preparations tomorrow as the team draws nearer to its season opener on Saturday, September 1. NU will face Southern Miss at 2:30 p.m. CST. The game will be broadcast regionally on ABC and ESPN2.

Tuesday Sports Day – MLB Signs New TV Deal

NEW YORK (AP) – A person with knowledge of the deal says Major League Baseball and ESPN have extended their television contract through 2021.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity Tuesday because the official announcement had not yet been made. MLB and the network scheduled a conference call for Tuesday afternoon.

The deal combines rights for TV, radio, digital and international that had been separate. The new single contract adds new rights to air a wild-card game, along with additional rights to highlights and digital content. It also gives the network more flexibility to show games involving popular teams.

The previous contracts were worth close to $360 million a year combined. The new combined deal with the additional rights will be worth about $700 million a year over eight years.

The extension was first reported by SportsBusiness Daily.

PITTSBURGH (AP) – With less than two weeks before the start of the regular season, Pro Bowl wide receiver Mike Wallace reported to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Wallace was at the team facility Tuesday morning. A restricted free agent, he had yet to sign his one-year contract tender worth approximately $2.7 million.

He also will undergo routine medical exams, but will not practice with his teammates until next week.

The Steelers conclude their preseason at home against the Carolina Panthers on Thursday and open their regular season Sept. 9 at the Denver Broncos.

Last season, Wallace has 72 receptions for 1,193 yards and eight touchdowns. He has 24 receiving touchdowns in his three-season career.

CONCORD, N.C. (AP) – Tony Stewart says he doesn’t expect any drama between himself and Matt Kenseth, despite throwing his helmet at Kenseth’s car at Bristol over the weekend.

Although the three-time NASCAR champion was joking Tuesday about his two-handed toss of his helmet, he said he wasn’t proud of losing his temper Saturday night. Stewart and Kenseth had contact while racing for the lead at Bristol, and it led to a spin that damaged Stewart’s car.

Stewart said he and Kenseth have raced against each other with respect for a long time and he expects it to stay that way. The two have not spoken about Saturday night.

And as for that post-wreck promise Stewart made to run over Kenseth every chance he gets this season? Stewart said the racing will be clean.

UNDATED (AP) – Chicago White Sox hurler Chris Sale goes his 16th win tonight when the AL Central-leading White Sox visit the Orioles in Baltimore. The Chi-Sox enter with a two-game lead over second-place Detroit. The O’s are just 3 1/2 games back of the Yankees in the AL East.

The Yankees host the Blue Jays, while the Tigers are in Kansas City.

Tampa Bay and Texas play game two of their series tonight in Arlington. The Rangers won last night, 6-5, allowing them to maintain their 5 1/2 game lead over the Athletics in the AL West. The Rays are 4 games back of the Yankees and a half-game back of the Orioles in that AL East race. The Athletics are in Cleveland for the second game of their series with the Indians.

Another young pitcher gunning for his 16th win is Washington’s Stephen Strasburg. He and the Nationals are in Miami tonight for a game against the Marlins. Strasburg is 15-5 with 183 strikeouts.

The Nats top Atlanta by 5 games in the National League East and tonight the Braves are in San Diego for the second game of their series with the Padres.

Johnny Cueto tries to become the majors’ first 17-game winner when the Reds visit Arizona. The Reds have opened a six-game lead over St. Louis in the NL Central.

The last divisional race to check is the NL West, where the Giants top the Dodgers by 2 1/2 games. LA is in Denver tonight to meet the Rockies, while the Giants are facing the Astros in the opener of a three-game series in Houston.

The remaining games tonight have Seattle at Minnesota, Boston in Anaheim against the Angels, the Phillies at home to the Mets, Milwaukee at Chicago and St. Louis at Pittsburgh.

Remains found near Chadron are of a Denver man

(Scottsbluff, Neb.)-The Nebraska State Patrol in conjunction with the Box Butte County Attorney’s Office has confirmed that remains uncovered in a remote area south of Chadron in June are those of a missing Denver man.

“Forensic examination and DNA testing has been completed,” said Investigative Services Lieutenant Monica Bartling. “The tests have confirmed what we suspected all along.  The remains uncovered in Dawes County are those of Josh Bullock.”

Bullock, 38, who lived in Denver, but had family and friends in the Alliance and Chadron areas was reported missing in early December 2011, after visiting family members in Alliance.  Investigators with the Nebraska State Patrol, in conjunction with the Dawes and Box Butte County Sheriff’s Office, began an investigation into Bullock’s disappearance. On December 14, 2011, his burnt pickup was found by a rancher in a ravine, southeast of Chadron.

The case remained active but with few leads until June 12, 2012, when investigators say Andres Gonzalez, a 27-year old Alliance man who held officers at bay during a 14 hour standoff in downtown Alliance, told negotiators he killed Bullock. Investigators believe Gonzalez killed Bullock on or around December 1, 2011 and that he disposed of his body in a remote area of Dawes County.

Charges have been filed in the case against Rose Siefke, 20, Hemingford. Siefke, a former girlfriend of Gonzalez, has been charged as an Accessory to a Felony in connection with Bullock’s death. She is currently free on bond.

Lt. Bartling said, “We hope this confirmation will bring some closure to Josh’s family and friends. At the same time we will continue our investigation as we work to piece together the events that led to his death

Nursing Home Needs $250,000 To Remain Open

The central Nebraska town of Callaway is fighting to keep its nursing home open, but it must raise $250,000 quickly to succeed.

Ever since the Evangelical Good Samaritan Society announced plans last September to close the nursing home, people have been working to save it.

Residents hope the newly created nonprofit Callaway Good Life Center will be able to take over the facility, but Good Samaritan officials say a deal must be completed by 5 p.m. Tuesday or the facility will close on Nov. 5.

Ron Jorgensen says he’s been overwhelmed by support. He says more than $50,000 in donations were pledged at a community meeting Monday and more were received Tuesday.

Jorgensen said Tuesday morning that he’s not sure how much more needs to be raised before the deadline.

Mysterious car found in Eagle Scout Lake

Police are looking into how a car ended up in a Grand Island lake.

Police were called Monday morning to Eagle Scout Lake when walkers on the lake’s trail noticed the trunk of a car sticking out of the water.

Record drought has lowered the water level at the lake nearly 6 feet.

Police are trying to determine whether the car has been in the lake for some time or was recently driven in.

Police Sgt. Dale Hilderbrand says front end damage, a broken headlight and black paint on the headlight lens indicate the car may have been involved in a crash with another vehicle before going into the lake. Investigators say the maroon Ford Taurus had no license plates.
