Huskers Up to No. 21 in AP Poll, Stay No. 20 in Coaches Poll

The Husker football team moved up one spot to twenty-first in the AP poll after their 30-27 victory over Wisconsin Saturday night in Lincoln. They remained twentieth in the USA Today coaches poll. Nebraska’s win tied for the second-largest comeback win in school history, as the Huskers came from 17 down in the third quarter to beat the Badgers and open Big Ten conference play with a win. Nebraska will take on Ohio State this Saturday in Columbus, with the kickoff scheduled for 7 PM.

Manning Rebounds With Big Game as Broncos Pound Raiders

Peyton Manning threw for 338 yards as the Denver Broncos snapped a two-game losing streak with a 37-6 rout of the Oakland Raiders at Sports Authority Field. Manning completed 30 of his 38 pass attempts and connected with Eric Decker, Joel Dreessen and Lance Ball on touchdown passes. Willis McGahee added 112 rushing yards and a touchdown. All told, the Broncos outgained the Raiders 507 to 237 on the day and were so dominant offensively that they didn’t punt once all afternoon. But it wasn’t all sunshine for the Broncos, as they lost starting center JD Walton, likely for the season. Walton broke his ankle in the second quarter. The Broncos move their record back to .500 at 2-2. They play four out of their next five games on the road, starting next Sunday in Foxboro against the New England Patriots.

Husker Volleyball Tops Wolverines in Four Sets

Behind a season-high 16 team blocks, the sixth-ranked Nebraska volleyball team beat Michigan 21-25, 25-13, 25-17, 25-21 at the NU Coliseum on Sunday afternoon. Morgan Broekhuis led the Nebraska block with a season-high eight total blocks. She also tallied a team-high 16 kills. Hayley Thramer notched seven blocks and 12 kills, while Gina Mancuso had four blocks and 12 kills. The Huskers are on the road this weekend, playing at Purdue on Friday and at Indiana on Saturday.

Rockies Swept in Los Angeles

The Colorado Rockies lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers 7-1 on Sunday afternoon, adding to their franchise record with their ninety-seventh loss of the season. The run came on an Andrew Brown solo homer in the fourth inning, the fifth of the season for the former Husker. It was the only run scored in the entire three-game series by the Rockies as they were swept at Dodger Stadium. Making his Major League debut, outfielder Rafael Ortega was the bright spot for the Rockies at the plate. He has two hits, reached base four times, and stole a base. Jorge de la Rosa took the loss for the Rockies on the mound, allowing four runs on five hits in four innings. The final series of the season for the Rockies opens Monday night in Arizona against the Diamondbacks. ESPN Radio 1410 will have the action, with pregame coverage at 8:05 and the first pitch at 8:40.

Children Aren’t Court Experts, They Often Lack Voice

Children who are placed in foster care and the child welfare system because of an abusive, neglected, tragic past have a hard time making sense of what’s happening around them. In the search of a new home or recovering from the loss of a parent that child must enter the court system without someone to trust or even help guide them through until the end.

On June 27th seven local volunteers who decided to make a difference were sworn into CASA. (Court Appointed Special Advocates) CASA volunteers act as the voice or the guiding light to help children who enter the court system through no fault of their own.

According to CASA, children with a CASA volunteer are much less likely to spend more than three years in foster care, in-fact 13.3% of children in foster care with a CASA volunteer stay more than three years whereas 27% of all children in foster care end up staying over three years. Cases involving a CASA are more likely to be permanently closed, those children are less likely to re-enter the child welfare system. Only 9% of CASA children re-enter the system as opposed to the 16% of children who do without an advocate from CASA.

Lincoln County CASA hasn’t been around forever, with the first seven advocates sworn in June 27th plus one more advocate who is currently working a on a case from another Nebraskan county, more advocates are needed not only by CASA but by the children who are placed in the described environment that the child will remember for the rest of their life.

Listen to Ginny Adams, a CASA volunteer, she explains her experience and why she does it.

To be an advocate you go through proper training before you’re sworn in then as an advocate dedicate a few hours a month to a case. Lincoln County CASA has a goal to help 100% of the children in need of a CASA.  As of April 2012, there were 144 existing cases where a CASA volunteer is needed, with only eight in Lincoln County not every child will be with an advocate. Cases with an advocate are also finished quicker resulting in less court time which means less money the county has to spend.

There are more than one ways to help. You can donate at any time, donations are tax deductible.

The next CASA training is in October! To be a volunteer contact your local Lincoln County CASA Executive Director Stephanie Miller at (308) 520-0577 OR E-mail lincolncountycasa@gmail.com

Five Grass Fires Spark South Of North Platte

Five fires burned a total of twelve acres south of North Platte. Firefighters from the North Platte Fire Department responded around 3:30 pm to the area near mile marker 80 on the west side of highway 83. The farthest fire south of North Platte was near the south entrance to Lake Maloney

There is no determined cause of the fires though a hot wheel bearing is a probable cause.

According to Battalion Chief at North Platte Fire Department, Jason Trimble, two separate fires joined into one single blaze. The largest fire responders contained burned seven acres. Trimble says it took 45 minutes to contain the five fires.

North Platte fire responders put four grass rigs to use against the fires while receiving mutual aid from Hershey supplying a tanker and Wallace supplying two grass rigs.

No structures were threatened and no injuries or accidents occurred.

Can You Gangnam Style?

The “Gangnam Style” craze has reached Thailand’s navy, which is among the latest to mimic the globally popular dance video.

In a video posted to YouTube, a few dozen smiling sailors from the Third Naval Area Command perform the rodeo-style dance and other hip-shaking moves at their base on the popular tourist island of Phuket.

Lt. Cmdr. Patiroop Khemtis said Friday officers took three days to film and edit the video, instructing participants to mimic the moves in the original video by South Korean singer PSY. It was shown at the base’s annual party Wednesday and posted to YouTube the next day.

The video shows white-uniformed sailors in sunglasses galloping through their offices and officers in scuba gear shimmying up the beach.
