Margaret Evelyn McKain, 92, of North Platte, NE passed away Monday, September 10, 2012, at Centennial Park Retirement Village in North Platte.
Evelyn was born August 26, 1920, to Charlie Clyde and Irene Pearl Curtis McKain on the family farm northwest of North Platte. In 1925 the family moved southwest of town and Evelyn attended District 39 Miller School. She went from first through eighth grade with some great teachers. Evelyn graduated from North Platte High School in 1941. During the summers she helped put up hay and during World War II she volunteered at the Canteen where she was in charge of cards, candy and magazines. A service man had found her name in a magazine that was handed out so he sent her several letters and a photo of him on a sign for the movie “Someday I’ll Find You.”
Evelyn had attended the First United Methodist Church and in later years she attended the First Baptist Church. She was a member of the Happy Hillside Extension Club and Home Helpers Extension Club. She volunteered at the Lincoln County Museum for a number of years with her good friend, Evelyn S. Smith. Over the years, Evelyn had volunteered over 4000 hours with RSVP. She also enjoyed bowling with a league until her legs gave out.
The family would like to thank the staff at Centennial Park Retirement Village for their many years of care.
Evelyn is survived by her sister, Lois Reckard, and sister-in-law, Geraldine McKain, both of North Platte; five nieces and nephews, Marcia (Gaylen) Rogers, of Highland, UT, Marlene (Bill) Songster, of North Platte, Mike McKain, of Lincoln, NE, Pat (Melinda) Reckard and Robin Reckard, all of North Platte; 14 great-nieces and nephews; 16 great great-nieces and nephews; and other family.
