Moo-ve Over, Nebraska Feedlots Hosting 11% More Cattle This Year

The number of cattle in Nebraska feedlots has grown 11 percent over last year.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says the 2.24 million cattle in Nebraska feedlots on Sept. 1 was the highest figure since the count began in 1994.

Nationwide, the number of cattle and calves on feed was 10.6 million. That’s 1 percent below last September.

The figures are from feedlots with capacities of greater than 1,000 cattle.

Placements in Nebraska feedlots during August totaled 470,000 head of cattle. That’s 6 percent higher than in 2011.

The marketings of fed cattle in the state during August totaled 445,000 head. That’s up 11 percent over last year.

Fatal Rollover Crash Ejects 25 Year Old From Vehicle

A 25-year-old Tecumseh man has died in a southeast Nebraska crash.

The accident occurred just east of Lewiston on Sunday morning. The accident scene was noticed by a deputy passing through the area about 8:30 a.m. Sunday, but Sheriff Jayme Reed says the accident likely happened shortly after midnight.

The victim was identified as 25-year-old Brandon Nelson.

Reed says Nelson was driving west on Nebraska Highway 4 when he lost control and the vehicle rolled several times, ejecting Nelson.

Reed says high speed and alcohol use are suspected in the accident, which is still being investigated.

Kearny Man Who Videotaped Woman In Shower Sentenced To Jail

A 25-year-old Kearney man has been sentenced to jail for videotaping a woman who was taking a shower in his home.

Tony Quintana was given three months for misdemeanor unlawful intrusion. He also was fined $500.

In August Buffalo County District Court Judge Bill Wright found Quintana guilty of the misdemeanor after a one-day nonjury trial.

In March a woman told Kearney police that Quintana had videotaped her showering at his home. She said she was in the process of moving and had asked to use his shower. She gave police a copy of the video and a picture that was copied from Quintana’s computer.

Court records say Quintana’s girlfriend gave the woman the evidence that led to Quintana’s arrest.

John Gale Reminds Nebraskans Of Voting Deadlines

Secretary of State John Gale outlined deadlines regarding voter registration and early voting for the Nov. 6 Nebraska general election.

Early voting for the election starts Oct. 1 by mail or in person at county election offices.

Any registered voter can cast an early-voting ballot.

Gale listed the following deadlines for the November election:

–Mail-in voter registrations must be postmarked by Oct. 19. Registrations close at motor vehicle offices and state agencies on Oct. 19.

–In-person voter registration at county election offices ends at 6 p.m. Oct. 26. This includes registration changes such as updating an address.

Registered voters can make requests until 4 p.m. Oct. 31 for early-voting ballots to be mailed. Nov. 5 is the deadline for in-person early voting at county election offices.

–The close of polls on Nov. 6 is the deadline for the return of early-voting ballots, including ballots returned by mail.

The secretary of state’s website (www.sos.ne.gov) provides detailed information regarding the voting process. The website includes a voter registration form, an application for an early-voting ballot, addresses and phone numbers for county election offices, and a look-up tool that allows voters to verify their registration status.

Gale reminded people to update their voter registration if they have moved within a county or submit a new registration if they have moved from one county to another.

Gale urged eligible Nebraskans to make sure they are registered to vote and then take the time to cast ballots. “Voting in Nebraska is a very user-friendly process,” he said.

People with voting questions can contact their county election office or the Secretary of State’s Office at (402) 471-2555.

Broncos Can’t Overcome Big Deficit for Second Straight Week in Loss

Another frantic fourth quarter comeback fell short as the Denver Broncos lost their second straight game, 31-25 to the Houston Texans in Denver. The Texans held a 31-11 lead with 10 minutes to play in the game, but the Broncos recovered a fumble near midfield and Peyton Manning found Brandon Stokley for a 38 yard touchdown two plays later Then with three minutes to go, Joel Dreessen caught a deflected Manning pass for a score from six yards out to make it a six point game. But just like in last week’s game against Atlanta, the Broncos couldn’t get the defensive stop they needed to get the ball back with enough time, and a last-second hook-and-lateral play failed. Manning threw for 330 yards on the night but completed just half of his 52 pass attempts. The 1-2 Broncos host the Oakland Raiders next Sunday afternoon.

Rockies Woeful Play Continues With Ninth Straight Loss

The Colorado Rockies continue to stagger towards the finish line in the 2012 season. They lost their ninth straight game, 10-7 to the Arizona Diamondbacks at Coors Field yesterday afternoon. The Rockies came back from an early 3-0 deficit and took a 4-3 lead on a Charlie Blackmon RBI single in the sixth inning. But Arizona scored four times in the eighth and three more times in the ninth off the exhausted Rockies bullpen. Colorado scored three times in the ninth to make the final score appear more respectable. For the Rockies offensively, Wilin Rosario and DJ LeMaiheu had three hits apiece. It’s the fourth-straight three hit game for Rosario. Blackmon and Tyler Colvin each had two RBI. The Rockies conclude their four game series against the Diamondbacks tonight. ESPN Radio 1410 has the action, with the pregame show at 7:05 and first pitch at 7:40.

Husker Men Lose Assistant to Bradley

After only six months with Tim Miles’ coaching staff, director of player development Ronald Coleman is leaving the Husker men’s basketball program. Coleman has taken an assistant coaching position at Bradley. Coleman was considered a major asset to Miles’ staff as a recruiter. He has ties to the Chicago area and was instrumental in arranging visits to Lincoln for some of the city’s top recruits this summer. But Coleman chose a more active coaching role with Bradley over the non-traveling role he had at Nebraska.
