Broncos Win Opener

The Denver Broncos defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 31-19 at Sports Authority Field last night, opening Peyton Manning’s Bronco tenure on a high note. The veteran quarterback showed almost no sign of rust as he completed 19-of-26 passes for 253 yards and two touchdowns. He led the Broncos to 10 points on consecutive drives after the Steelers had taken a 19-14 lead early in the fourth quarter. Another new acquisition sealed the win for the Broncos. Tracy Porter returned an interception for a touchdown right at the two minute warning to put Denver in front by two scores. The Broncos defense sacked Pittsburgh’s Ben Roethlisberger five times and limited the Steelers to 284 total yards. Week Two will provide another tough test for Manning and the Broncos. They head south to take on the Atlanta Falcons next Monday night.

Huskers Tumble Out of AP Poll After Defeat

The Husker football team is out of the AP Top 25 poll for the first time since November 2009. They dropped into the ‘Also Receiving Votes’ category after their 36-30 loss at UCLA Saturday night. The Huskers had been ranked 16th entering the contest, which saw them give up 653 yards of total offense. That’s the most that any Husker defense has allowed in the Bo Pelini era. Nebraska remains ranked 24th in the USA Today coaches’ poll, down 10 spots from the week before. The Huskers had good company in terms of tumbling out of the AP Poll – Arkansas, Wisconsin and Oklahoma State, all considered conference title contenders, saw themselves slide out of the rankings after losses this weekend as well. Nebraska looks to rebound against Arkansas State on Saturday at Memorial Stadium. It’s set for an 11 AM kickoff.

Rockies Drop Both Ends of Doubleheader (LISTEN LIVE TONIGHT on ESPN Radio 1410)

The Colorado Rockies blew early leads in losing both ends of a doubleheader to the Philadelphia Phillies yesterday. In the opener, the Rockies edged out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning, but the offense would do no further damage and the Phillies won 3-2 on a walk-off bloop single by John Mayberry Jr. in the ninth. The nightcap saw the Rockies take a 4-1 lead in the third inning, with Chris Nelson’s three-run homer capping the four-run frame. But again, one inning of offense would be all the Rockies would get. The Phillies scored twice in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings, helped by five Rockies errors, and won the game 7-4. The Rockies will hope to rebound from their sweep in Philadelphia as they return home to open a series against San Francisco tonight. ESPN Radio 1410 has the action, with the pregame show at 7:05 and the first pitch at 7:40.

U Of N Wishes To House President Once Again

The University of Nebraska is thinking about returning to its past practice of providing a house for NU’s president to use.

The Board of Regents will discuss allowing the NU Foundation to buy a house for the president’s use at its meeting Friday. Donations would pay for the house.

The university already provides an annual housing allowance of $24,000 to J.B. Milliken. The chancellors at each campus receive similar amounts.

But the university used to provide a house to its president. That home burned down in 1996.

Regent Tim Clare says many universities provide homes for their presidents to use.

Clare says Milliken would likely use the home to entertain university guests.

FOOTBALL: Week Two Recap (UPDATED)

The North Platte Bulldogs once again could not recover from a slow start in a 56-28 loss to Lincoln East at Bauer Field. The Bulldogs fell behind 21-0 in the first quarter and trailed 49-14 at the half in the one-sided defeat. Jack Kenny caught two long touchdowns and Shane Mauch passed for two scores, and Tyson Chromy rushed for a touchdown to give the North Platte offense some life, but the defense was unable to stop the Spartans attack. North Platte drops to 0-3 with the loss. They’re at Bellevue East next Friday.

This 60-yard catch and run by Jack Kenny is tonight’s Play of the Game: 5 – Kenny 60 yard catch and run

After two weeks of defensive excellence, it was the offense’s time to shine for St. Pat’s. They scored 33 points in the first half and 34 in the second, routing Bayard 67-12. Though the shutout streak for the Irish came to an end, they still flexed their muscle on both sides of the ball in improving to 3-0. Next up for the Irish – a trip to Ravenna.

The Hershey Panthers dropped to 1-1 on the season with a 14-6 loss at Southern Valley. They’ll host Perkins County next Friday night.

Maxwell couldn’t keep up with high-scoring Elm Creek in a 45-28 loss in Maxwell. The defeat is the second in a row for the Wildcats and drops them to 1-2. The Wildcats have a bye this week.

Sutherland played on Thursday night, and were beaten by Southwest 52-14. The Sailors did score their first points of the season in the loss. They are 0-2 and host Arapahoe next Friday.

Focus Turned To Sutherland Reservoir Inlet

Update: 9/10:  The search for the missing Larry Sack continues.

The search of the Nebraska Public Power District canal was completed on Friday near 5:00pm with no signs of Sack in the six miles dive teams searched.

Dive teams have begun to search the Sutherland Reservoir Inlet, as well as bridges along the canal.

Over the weekend search teams continued the search allowing volunteers to join the search.

Air-crafts and water-crafts are still being utilized in the search.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

The missing 61-year-old man, Larry Sack of North Platte, was first reported missing on September 4th by his family after he failed to appear at a family event. Family found his pickup near the Nebraska Public Power District Canal and the search began.

Three days into the search Sack has not yet been located. On September 7th the search continues.

On September 6th the search was put on hold at 9:00PM.

The volunteer search teams have so far searched 4 miles of the canal with only 2.5 miles left to search. If Sack is not found within the next 2.5 miles divers will begin to search the Sutherland Reservoir Inlet.

Chief Deputy of the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office Roland L. Kramer says Nebraska Game and Parks Officers and Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputies are deploying watercraft to search the Reservoir and Inlet area today.

Officials believe that Sack has been submerged in the water for about six days and they hope to find him soon.

Roland Kramer also says that Sutherland and Paxton rescue workers have done a fantastic job in the search, they may receive mutual aid from Buffalo and Scottsbluff County Dive teams today.   Additional search continues with the Nebraska State Patrol Aircraft Unit as well.
