Trial Set, Middle School Teacher Accused Of Molesting Children For Two Years

A former Omaha Middle school teacher who is accused of molesting a child will be scheduled to appear for trial on Feb 20th.

Prosecutors say Shad Knutson a social studies teacher went two years with the act. The 35-year-old teacher had molested or had inappropriate relationships with students ages 13-15 from 2008 to 2010 at Nathan Hale Magnet Middle School.

Knutson is charged with seven felony counts, including sexual assault of a child.
Knutson’s attorney sought out separate trials, but Douglas County District Judge Duane Dougherty refused the request because all accusations are too similar so all the girls he is accused of molesting may testify at the same trial.

Chadron State Park Opens After Evacuation

Now that the major threats have diminished Chadron State Park is set to reopen.

Crews with the park are cleaning cabins for use. Cabins should be ready early next week.

The fires burned a lot of vegetation and some trees but didn’t harm any cabins. Visitors may return to the park by Friday, visitors with respiratory problems are urged to take caution as the air quality poses issues with the amount of ash in the air.

Week Two Football Preview

The North Platte Bulldogs are looking for their first win of the season as Lincoln East comes to town tonight. The Spartans are 1-1. North Platte has faced Lincoln East once in Bernie Madison’s tenure – a 13-12 loss at Beechner Field back in 2009. For North Platte to get off the schneid they must take better care of the ball – they turned the ball over five more times in their 43-14 loss to Lincoln Pius X last year. ESPN Radio 1410 has the call of this game, with pregame coverage at 6:30 and the kickoff at 7 PM.

The St. Patrick’s Irish defense will give up some points this season eventually – they just haven’t yet. It’s two games, and two whitewashes for the stout Irish D. Tonight they face a new challenge in the wide-open Bayard passing attack. The Tigers are 0-1 after losing their opener 28-7 to Cambridge.

The Panthers dominated the trenches on both sides in their season opening win over Kimball, shutting out the Longhorns and outrushing them 285-3. Tonight the Panthers head back out on the road to take on Southern Valley. The Eagles dropped their season opener to Doniphan-Trumbull last week.

A big win was followed by a big loss for the Wildcats, who fell 52-14 to Arapahoe last week. This week Maxwell tries to get back to basics offensively, re-establishing their identity in the ground game. They’ll also hope their experienced defense can bounce back in a big way as Elm Creek comes to town. Elm Creek held off Ansley-Litchfield in their opener last week.

The Brady program has gotten used to winning the past few seasons, but this year they’ve known nothing but defeat so far, losing their first two games. They are hopeful to get back on track as they host Amherst. Amherst held off Loomis 20-19 in their first game.

Wallace has pounded their first two foes, but tonight’s game won’t be anywhere near as easy. The Paxton Tigers come to town for what might be the marquee matchup in the area this week. Paxton ripped Hayes Center 56-6 in their debut, then took last week off, so they’ll be expecting their toughest challenge of the season to date as well.

VOLLEYBALL: Dawgs Top Class B No. 10 Aurora in Five

The North Platte Bulldogs came from two-sets-to-one down to upend Aurora in five sets in their home opener at the Dawghouse last night, 26-28, 25-23, 13-25, 25-18, 15-9. Freshman Allison Kuenle led the Bulldogs with 15 kills, including three in a row in the fifth set and the match-clinching swing. Senior Kylie Wroot added 12 kills. The win moves North Platte to 2-3 on the season. They face Gering and Alliance in a triangular in Gering on Saturday.

These back to back kills by Allison Kuenle gave North Platte the edge in the fifth set, and they’re our Play of the Game.

Kuenle back-to-back kills 9-6

Burkhead Still Uncertain For Saturday

Rex Burkhead’s status for Nebraska’s game at UCLA tomorrow night is still up in the air, but Burkhead is on the travel roster and did leave for Los Angeles with the team on Thursday. Head coach Bo Pelini says the senior running back is “ahead of schedule” in his rehab from his sprained left knee, but Burkhead did not practice Thursday before the team’s flight. Cornerback Mo Seisay, who missed the opener with an ankle injury, is also on the travel squad and will make his Husker debut. Kickoff tomorrow night at the Rose Bowl is set for 6 PM.

Rockies Drop Another 1-0 Contest

The Colorado Rockies have lost 1-0 games on back-to-back days for the first time in franchise history after falling by that score to the Atlanta Braves yesterday afternoon. The Braves’ lone run scored when Rockies pitcher Jhoulys Chacin dropped a throw from his catcher after a pitch, allowing a runner to come in from third. The Rockies travel to Philadelphia today to open a three-game weekend series against the Phillies. First pitch for tonight’s series opener comes at 6:10.

No. 1 Huskers Sweep Sooners

The top-ranked Husker volleyball team swept Oklahoma 25-14, 25-11, 25-16 at the NU Coliseum last night. Hannah Werth led the team with 14 kills. She also posted 13 digs, marking her sixth double-double of the season. Meghan Haggerty added nine kills and five blocks on the evening. Both Morgan Broekhuis and Hayley Thramer posted seven kills, while Thramer also recorded five blocks. The Huskers return to action today as they face Duquesne.

Three Maxwell Teachers Fail To Report Child Abuse

The Nebraska State Patrol in conjunction with the Lincoln County Attorney’s Office and the State Health and Human Services Department is conducting an ongoing investigation into allegations of sexual assault of students attending Maxwell High School in Maxwell, Neb.

The ongoing investigation began in April 2012 after the Nebraska State Patrol was made aware of allegations of the sexual assault of a student involved in the Maxwell High School wrestling program. The investigation led to several more potential victims of alleged sexual assault.

On Tuesday, Sept. 4, investigators with the Nebraska State Patrol cited and released three members of the Maxwell Public Schools for Failure to Make a Report of Child Abuse or Neglect, a Class III Misdemeanor.

Three Maxwell Public Schools officials on suspicion of failure to make a report of child abuse. Cited were superintendent Danny Twarling, high school principal Aubrey Boucher and wrestling coach Ryan Jones.

An affidavit filed by a State Patrol investigator says the case began with reports of an underage wrestling team member being held down by other team members and sodomized with a soda bottle and, on another occasion, being groped on a school bus. The investigator says the three school officials knew of the accusations, but did not report them to authorities.

“This remains a very active investigation,” said Lt. Lynn Williams, Troop D- North Platte. “There is potential for more victims and additional arrests or citations.”

Anyone with information that might aid in the investigation is asked to contact the Troop D Headquarters at 308-535-8047.
