(AUDIO) Papuchis Preparing Husker Defense for UCLA

The Nebraska offense was the story of their season-opening victory over Southern Miss. The Huskers put up more yards against the Golden Eagles than in any other game in Bo Pelini’s head coaching tenure. But the Husker defense had some difficulty tackling and defending the option, and they know they need to tighten things up for Saturday against a UCLA offense that also had an impressive debut, a 49-24 win over Rice. Husker defensive coordinator John Papuchis was complementary of the Bruins in his post-practice remarks yesterday. “I think they are explosive. Obviously, they had 650 yards of offense and scored a lot of points in a hurry,” Papuchis said. “Their skill guys are explosive and athletic, and they are pretty solid up front. We know we have a tough task going there, but we are preparing well for it.” The Bruins will run a read-option offense, similar in some ways to the Southern Miss offense, but are expected to pass more and test the Husker secondary.

Fire Update: Let the Clean Up Begin

Firefighters continue to make progress on containment. The Douthit Fire is 95% contained having burned 29,730 acres while the West Ash fire is 65% contained with 58,450 acres consumed. Today fire fighters efforts focused on patrol, and mop-up, rehabilitation of dozer and fire lines in affected areas.

As residents return home after the Complex 23 Fire evacuations they may find their homes and lawns have been impacted by fire retardant, an important tool in fighting fire.

Fire retardants are used in fighting the wildfires and are primarily water-based and have U.S. Forest Service approval.

Cleaning Up:

  • Dry retardant may require some scrubbing with water or power washing. A mild soap may also be used to help remove the retardant. Allow the surface to dry fully and repeat as needed to ensure that play structures and surfacing is free of retardant.
  • Once washed off, allow a few days for sunlight to help break down the remaining chemical compounds and allow the fire retardant to be absorbed into the ground.
