Letters To The Post: Vote “No” On Proposed Amendment No.2

Next week, Nebraska residents will be voting next week on Proposed Amendment No. 2, which would make hunting and trapping a right, thereby protecting the use of “traditional” hunting and trapping methods and shadowing the option of safer, less cruel live traps. If this amendment is passed, Nebraska would never be able to ban cruel traps.

Steel-jaw, body-gripping, and snare traps are exceedingly cruel. Even rubber-coated traps cause immense pain and injury! Body-gripping traps crush bones and slowly suffocate animals, while snares jerk tightly around victims’ necks, faces, bodies, or limbs. With all these traps, terrified animals, in their frantic struggles to escape, will commonly injure themselves further, snapping bones and tearing flesh—some animals even chew off their own limbs to break free.
By voting “No” on this issue, we can demonstrate that our state cares about the welfare of our wildlife, as well as show that we are compassionate people.

Please vote “No” on Proposed Amendment No. 2!

FOOTBALL: Panthers, Irish, Swedes and Raiders Move to Quarterfinals

The glass slipper in the state football playoffs fits the paw of a Panther. Two interception returns for touchdowns in the fourth quarter lifted twelfth-seed Hershey to a 34-20 victory over Blue Hill and into the Class C2 quarterfinals for the first time ever. Colton Marshall and Dylan Johnson had the pick-sixes that helped Hershey stave off the Bobcats rally. Also moving on to the state quarterfinals in C2 are the St. Patrick’s Irish. Sean Keenan threw a touchdown pass and ran for three scores in a 32-6 win over West Holt. In class C1, thirteen-seed Gothenburg posted their second straight shutout, blanking Chadron 12-0 to advance. In Class D2, Medicine Valley also moved on, beating Creek Valley 64-42. Elsewhere, Chase County fell to Boone Central/Newman Grove 48-20 in class C1, and Maxwell lost 16-0 to Arapahoe in class D1.

VOLLEYBALL: Bulldogs Fall in District Final; Class D District Finals Tonight

The North Platte Lady Bulldogs lost in the finals of the A6 district volleyball tournament, falling in four sets to Lincoln Pius X 17-25, 21-25, 31-29, 20-25. Their season ends with a 19-12 record. Three Lincoln County teams play for the right to go to state tonight. In the D1-6 district final, Sutherland battles Potter-Dix at Creek Valley High School in Chappell. In the D2-5 district final at North Platte’s McGahan Activities Center, Brady faces Wallace. Both games are scheduled for 7 PM starts.

Burkhead Misses Practice For Third Straight Day

Husker senior running back Rex Burkhead did not practice for the third straight day, and it appears unlikely that he will play Saturday when the Huskers visit Michigan State. Burkhead hasn’t practiced since re-injuring his left knee in the win at Northwestern two Saturdays ago. If Burkhead can not go, Ameer Abdullah would make his second straight start. If Abdullah cracked the century mark in rushing yards against the Spartans, he’d be the first Husker running back since 1994 to rush for over 100 yards in his first four career starts.

Husker Guard Woodberry Removed From Team

Husker women’s basketball coach Connie Yori announced yesterday that sophomore guard Rebecca Woodberry had been removed from the team’s roster for violating team policies. Woodberry averaged 4.5 points and 3.3 rebounds in 31 games as a redshirt freshman last season. The 5’10” guard was the Gatorade High School Player of the Year in Arizona and was among the most highly touted recruits of Yori’s 2010 class.

Woodyard Named AFC Defensive Player of the Week

Denver Broncos linebacker Wesley Woodyard was named the AFC’s Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in Sunday’s win over New Orleans. Woodyard filled up the stat sheet, recording 13 tackles (nine solo), a sack, an interception, a forced fumble, tackle for loss and two passes defensed. He’s the second Bronco to earn the honor this year, after Tracy Porter won the award after Week 1. The Broncos visit the Cincinnati Bengals this Sunday.

Eastern Nebraska Ethanol Plant Halts Production

Valero Energy has again stopped production at its ethanol plant in Albion in eastern Nebraska.

The Lincoln Journal Star says company spokesman Bill Day says the plant was idled recently because low margins mean it can’t make ethanol profitably right now.

The company originally shut the plant down in June because of high corn prices. It restarted the plant in mid-September after corn prices fell from all-time highs. Corn prices are about the same right now, but Day says margins haven’t improved. Falling gasoline prices and falling demand could also be a factor.

Day says Valero plans to restart the Albion plant when margins improve.

Crop Report: Corn/Soybean Harvest Nearly Complete

Nebraska’s corn and soybean harvests are nearly completed well ahead of schedule, but the winter wheat crop is off to a poor start.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture released its latest update on the state’s crops on Wednesday.

The USDA says 94 percent of Nebraska’s corn crop has been harvested. Normally, the corn harvest is only about half done at this stage.

About 98 percent of the soybean crop has been harvested. That’s also ahead of the average of 85 percent done at this point.

The winter wheat crop has been slow to emerge because of the drought, and some farmers have replanted their fields. About 74 percent of the winter wheat has emerged. That’s behind the average of 93 percent at this time of year.

Two Dead Bodies Under Investigation In The Panhandle

Authorities are investigating the deaths of two men whose bodies were found at different locations on different days in the Nebraska Panhandle city of Alliance.

Alliance Police Chief John Kiss says the body of a 40-year-old man was discovered Monday evening in the basement of his home. Kiss says the body of the second man was found Tuesday morning, leaning up against a fence elsewhere in town.

Their names haven’t been released.

It’s unclear whether authorities suspect crimes were involved in the men’s deaths.

Kiss and Box Butte County Attorney Kathleen Hutchinson didn’t immediately return messages Wednesday from The Associated Press.
