Burkhead Honored With Scholar-Athlete Award

Nebraska senior running back Rex Burkhead has been selected as one of 15 recipients of the National Football Foundation National Scholar-Athlete Awards presented by Fidelity Investments.

The honor is one of the top awards a college football student-athlete can earn and the honorees also comprise the list of finalists for the 2012 William V. Campbell Trophy, which recognizes an individual as the best football scholar-athlete in the nation.

Each member of the 2012 National Scholar-Athlete Class will travel to New York City to be honored Dec. 4 during the 55th NFF Annual Awards Dinner. They each receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship, and one member of the class will also be announced live at the event as the recipient of the Campbell Trophy. The winner of the Campbell Trophy will receive a $7,000 increase in postgraduate funds for a total scholarship of $25,000.

Burkhead is the 21st Husker to be honored as a NFF Scholar-Athlete, the most of any school in the country. Burkhead is Nebraska first honoree since defensive end Chris Kelsay was recognized in 2002.

A native of Plano, Texas, Burkhead has distinguished himself throughout his Nebraska career as one of the nation’s most complete student-athletes. On the field, Burkhead earned first-team All-Big Ten honors last season when he rushed for 1,357 yards and scored 17 touchdowns.

In 2012, Burkhead has remained a key part of the Nebraska offense despite battling a knee injury. He has rushed for more than 400 yards and scored four touchdowns to help the Husker offense rank among the top 15 nationally in rushing, scoring and total offense.

Off the field, Burkhead was a first-team CoSIDA Academic All-American in 2011, and is a strong candidate for repeat honors as a senior. He was also an academic all-conference pick each of the past two years, earning honors from the Big Ten in 2011 and the Big 12 as a sophomore in 2010. Burkhead carries a 3.43 cumulative grade-point average in history and is on track to earn his degree in December, completing his undergraduate work in just 3 ½ years.

Burkhead’s impact extends beyond the field and classroom, as he has done extensive outreach work in Lincoln and throughout Nebraska. A three-time member of the Brook Berringer Citizenship Team, Burkhead was also one of 11 FBS football athletes named to the 2012 AFCA Good Works Team. Burkhead was chosen as the winner of the Uplifting Athletes’ National Rare Disease Champion Award for his relationship with Jack Hoffman.

Burkhead is one of two Big Ten players honored with as an NFF National Scholar-Athlete, joining Northwestern offensive tackle Patrick Ward.

Woman Who Ruined A Party by Biting Someone’s Ear Off…Loses Appeal

A Lincoln woman who was given five to 12 years in prison for biting off part of a man’s ear has lost an appeal of her conviction and sentence.

The Lincoln Journal Star reports that the Nebraska Appeals Court on Tuesday rejected arguments by Anna Godfrey.

Lincoln police say Godfrey was at a party in April 2010, got into an argument with several people and attacked the man because he or someone else in his group said she was fat. Godfrey said she bit him after he tackled and choked her.

The 23-year-old Godfrey said in her appeal that there wasn’t enough evidence to justify the verdict against her, that the jury’s instructions were problematical and that her sentence was excessive.

The Appeals Court disagreed with each point.

Experts Say It Was Probably A Great White..Ouch

Experts say the shark that bit and killed a surfer off California’s central coast probably was a great white and may have been 15 feet long.

Thirty-nine-year-old Francisco Javier Solorio Jr. of Orcutt was bitten in the upper torso in the waters off Surf Beach in Santa Barbara County on Tuesday. He died at the scene.

Authorities have closed the beach about 150 miles northwest of Los Angeles, where another shark attack two years ago killed a 19-year-old surfer.

Ralph Collier of the Shark Research Committee says he’ll meet with investigators and examine the surfboard to study teeth marks but it’s likely the attacker was a great white, which is not uncommon in California waters.

He also says it’s likely the shark wasn’t trying to kill the surfer but may have mistaken him for prey such as a seal and took a test bite that proved deadly.

Pre-orders for Great Plains Regional Medical Center bonds available until Oct. 31.

North Platte, Neb. While bonds will officially sell on November 1, local residents interested in purchasing series 2012 tax-exempt Great Plains Regional Medical Center bonds are encouraged to act prior to October 31.

The bonds will in-part be used to help fund the Great Plains Regional Medical Center $100 million patient tower construction project. Among other features, the project includes a 116-bed, five-story patient tower featuring modernized patient units, all private rooms, more space for updated technology and visiting family members, increased parking and the expansion of the central utility plant.

“The amount of planning, research, fiscal projection, evaluation, financial review and data collection that has brought us to this day is an incredible accomplishment,” said Greg Nielsen, Great Plains Regional Medical Center president and CEO. “I really don’t think any of us can truly appreciate the impact that the patient tower project will have on health care in the region over the next few decades.”

Great Plains Regional Medical Center has selected Piper Jaffray, an investment banking firm based in Minneapolis, Minn., to serve as the bond underwriter.

The bonds will be sold in minimum denominations of $5,000. Individuals interested in purchasing the bonds should contact their broker or financial advisor or call Piper Jaffray at 888.527.5339 no later than October 31. More information about the bonds and the preliminary official statement is available at gprmc.com/bonds.

“Final interest rates on the various maturities of the Great Plains Regional Medical Center bond issue will be determined  on November 1, the day of the official pricing, based on market conditions at the time, ” said Krystal Claymore, Great Plains Regional Medical Center chief financial officer. Claymore indicates there is no direct or indirect liability to the city or county.

Motorists traveling around the intersection of Leota St. and Willow St. can already see evidence of the project’s start. Work on the area where the information technology department will be housed has begun and a north east parking lot has been poured.

A formal dedication ceremony will be held when the steel for the patient tower is erected sometime in the Spring of 2013.

“In the coming months, more information will be provided about the many ways the community can participate in what is believed to be the most exciting transformation in local health care,” said Nielsen.

The anticipated project completion date is Spring 2015.
