Accident At 3rd & Jeffers Monday

A two-vehicle accident which involved one man, two minors and a young child, occurred some time around 3:40PM on Monday, October, 22nd, at the intersection of 3rd and Jeffers. One adult female was taken by ambulance to Great Plains Regional Medical Center.

The accident involved a maroon Cadillac Sedan Deville, driven by an 52year-old male and a Silver Pontiac G6, believed to be driven by a 15-year-old female with two young passengers, one who appears to be fourteen years of age and another which appears under the age of five.

Crews from the North Platte Fire Department were on scene cleaning debris from the road while a deputy from the Lincoln Co. Sheriff’s Office directed traffic. An officer from the North Platte PD assessed the accident.

According to the  authorities,  a witness at the scene reported that the Pontiac followed behind her through the intersection as they both turned east.  A reminder that it is unsafe to proceed in an attempt to turn prior to the vehicle in front of you first completing their maneuver.

Spotted Tail Fire Burns 83 Acres Near Chadron

Firefighters have been able to mostly contain a wildfire in northwest Nebraska after it burned 83 acres.

The U.S. Forest Service says the Spotted Tail Fire began Saturday, and burned land about five miles south of Chadron.

Weston Burch, who oversaw the initial response, says volunteer firefighters did a good job of containing the fire and keeping it from spreading.

Officials estimated the fire was about 95 percent contained Sunday afternoon. Firefighters were working Sunday to strengthen containment lines around the fire.

The land burned by the fire was part of the Nebraska National Forests and Grasslands.

The Cameron Effect, Effort In Response To Loss

A Douglas County sheriff’s detective is working to bring some good from an accident that killed a Nebraska man in November 2010.

Twenty-three-year-old Zachary Harrison, formerly of Hutchinson, is serving nearly seven years in prison for stealing a truck on the University of Kansas campus and later rear-ending a car 21-year-old Cameron Freeman was riding in. Freeman, of Lincoln, Neb., died in the crash on U.S. 59.

In response, Freeman’s parents started the Cameron Effect, a Web-based effort that asks people to commit seven acts of kindness.

Detective Jay Armbrister responded to the Freemans’ efforts by giving presentations about the accident to try and prevent similar tragedies. The Lawrence Journal-World reports  he’s also befriended Harrison, who will join in the speeches when he’s released from prison.

Iowa Man Accused Of Robbery In U.S. District Court

An Iowa man will face federal charges in a bank robbery, now that Nebraska is dropping its case.

The Sioux City Journal says 67-year-old Max Lafferty, of Sioux City, Iowa, was indicted last week in U.S. District Court in Omaha.

Dakota County Attorney Kim Watson filed a motion Friday to dismiss the Nebraska case against Lafferty.

Lafferty is accused of robbing a Bank of the West branch in South Sioux City on Sept. 11. Police say he flashed a steak knife when he demanded cash from a bank worker and left the building with about $1,500. He was arrested about a block away.

A Dakota County jailer said Monday that Lafferty has been turned over to federal marshals. Online court records don’t list the name of Lafferty’s attorney.

Man Admits He Shot His Step Daughter

A 37-year-old Bellevue man had made a deal with prosecutors and admitted fatally shooting his stepdaughter on the front porch of her mother’s home.

In Sarpy County District Court in Papillion on Monday, Michael Williams pleaded guilty to first-degree murder after prosecutors dropped a weapons charge.

Prosecutors say Williams gunned down 21-year-old Michala Pomfret on April 10. She died two days later.

Williams’ attorney say Williams tried to kill himself within days of shooting Pomfret.

Williams is scheduled for sentencing on Jan. 14.

He will be sentenced in January.

Monday Sports Day – NL Pennant Decided Tonight

Can the Giants do it again?

UNDATED (AP) — Major League Baseball is going to have a third winner-take-all game in four postseason series, and it’ll be played tonight in San Francisco.

The Giants pushed the NLCS to a decisive seventh game by beating the visiting Cardinals 6-1. It’s San Francisco’s second straight win with their backs to the wall and fifth elimination-game victory of the playoffs. They spotted the Reds a 2-00 lead in the best-of-five NLDS before sweeping the final three games in Cincinnati.

The Giants send Matt Cain to the mound. The veteran right-hander got the win in the decisive fifth game of the NLDS but lost to St. Louis in Game 3 of the NLCS in his last appearance.

The Cards are going with Game 3 winner Kyle Lohse.

Panthers boot general manager

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Carolina Panthers have fired general manager Marty Hurney following the team’s 1-5 start this season.

Panthers owner Jerry Richardson says in release that it was an “extremely difficult decision” and that “Marty made every effort to bring success to the Panthers and took the team to a Super Bowl and two NFC championship games.” He says “unfortunately, we have not enjoyed the success we hoped for in recent years.”

Carolina has not made the playoffs since 2008.

Hurney, the Panthers’ GM since 2002, took responsibility for the team’s failures in the release saying, “I am responsible for everybody in coaching, the players, the scouts and everybody in football operations. After six weeks, we are 1-5 coming off a 6-10 season.”

Longstanding rivals close out Week 7

CHICAGO (AP) — The Bears will be trying to solidify their spot atop the NFC North tonight when they host the division-rival Lions. Chicago is 4-1 coming off its bye week. The Lions halted a three-game losing streak last week by rallying for an overtime victory against Philadelphia and are 2-3.

Emotions boiled over the last time these two teams met at Soldier Field while the Bears were beating the Lions 37-13, and it’s a good bet sparks will be flying again tonight.

Taking care of the ball will be one of Detroit’s biggest priorities. Chicago’s opportunistic defense is tied with undefeated Atlanta for most takeaways in the league, with 13 interceptions and four fumble recoveries. The Bears overall defense is tops in the conference while their offense is dead last. The Lions have the second-best defense in the NFC and their offense is ranked 11th in the 16-team conference.

Wildcats pass Ducks

NEW YORK (AP) — Kansas State has moved ahead of Oregon for No. 3 in the new BCS poll, behind SEC rivals Alabama and Florida.

The Wildcats’ big victory Saturday at West Virginia was enough to nudge them past the Ducks, who are No. 2 in both polls but are getting held back by computer ratings that lag behind the other highly ranked teams.

The Crimson Tide is still solidly in first, and Florida grabbed a firmer grip on second with a 44-11 victory over South Carolina on Saturday.

The Gators are tops in the computer ratings and Kansas State is second. The Wildcats beat West Virginia 55-14 for their third Big 12 road victory.

Fourth-place Oregon is coming off a 43-21 win at Arizona State and sits sixth in the computer ratings.

Charges Filed After Girl In Skunk Costume Was Shot

Charges have been filed against a Pennsylvania man who shot what he thought was a skunk but was really his 8-year-old cousin in a black-and-white Halloween costume.

Twenty-four-year-old Thomas Edward Grant of Jackson Center, Mercer County, was charged Thursday with aggravated assault, reckless endangerment and simple assault.

The girl was hit in the shoulder, arm, back and neck. She remained in critical condition from the shooting in rural Rochester, about 30 miles northwest of Pittsburgh.

Police say the girl was playing hide-and-seek behind the Grant family’s home Saturday night when she was shot once with a 12-gauge shotgun. She was wearing a black body costume and a black hat with a white feather.

Grant has a preliminary hearing Nov. 1. It wasn’t clear whether he had an attorney.

Police say a costumed 9-year-old girl was accidentally shot outside a western Pennsylvania home during a Halloween party by a relative who thought she was a skunk.

New Sewickley Township police say the girl was over a hillside and wearing a black costume and a black hat with a white tassel. Chief Ronald Leindecker told the Beaver County Times that a male relative mistook her for a skunk and fired a shotgun, hitting her in the shoulder, arm, back and neck Saturday night.

Leindecker told the newspaper that the girl was alert and talking when she was flown to Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, about 30 miles away. Her condition was unavailable.

Leindecker says the man hadn’t been drinking and he doesn’t know whether charges will be filed. New Sewickley police said Sunday that decision will be made in a few days.
