Puppy Placed In Newspaper Box, Owner Grabs Lunch

A trucker who wanted a quick bite to eat received a citation Saturday for putting his young puppy in a quarter-slot newspaper box in Lincoln.

The trucker, Nebyou Brook, of Oakland California, wanted to grab something to eat from a fast-food restaurant. Brook said he wasn’t allowed to take the puppy inside and he didn’t want to leave him in the truck, so he inserted the required amount of quarters and placed the approximately 7-week-old terrier puppy in a newspaper sales box.

According to the Associated Press, another man saw what happened, so he put popped some coins into the box to retrieve the puppy.

The trucker was cited for animal neglect and was allowed to keep the puppy.

FOOTBALL: Week Eight Opens Tonight With District Title Clash Between Irish and Panthers

The final week of the prep football regular season gets underway tonight with some big games, none bigger than the clash for the C2-9 district title at Knights of Columbus Field in North Platte. The St. Patrick’s Irish are 7-0 and are obliterating their opponents, with their power rushing attack averaging close to 49 points per game. But tonight they’ll contend with the stout defense of the Hershey Panthers, which is limiting opponents just over 10 points per contest. Kickoff at the home of the Irish is set for 7 PM.

Elsewhere, Brady and Sutherland are playing their season finales. The Eagles play host to Hitchcock County, while the Sailors hope to end their season with a first win as they welcome Morrill to town. Gothenburg is at home hosting sixth-ranked Kearney Catholic, ninth-ranked Cozad takes on Ogallala in Cozad, Paxton makes a trip to take on SMC, and Hayes Center hosts unbeaten fourth-ranked Medicine Valley.

Lady Knights Swept; Play Regular Season Finale Tonight (LISTEN LIVE on ESPN Radio 1410)

The North Platte Lady Knights were beaten in three sets by Central Community College in Columbus last night, 25-18, 25-16, 25-17. Brooke Henry had seven kills for the Lady Knights to lead the attack in the losing effort. North Platte falls to 17-16 with the loss. They conclude their regular season tonight when they host the Concordia University JV at McDonald-Belton Gymnasium. ESPN Radio 1410 will have all the action, with pregame coverage at 5:45 and the first serve at 6 PM.

Huskers Rout Hawkeyes in Three Sets

The fourth-ranked Husker volleyball team had an easy time with Iowa last night in Iowa City. The Huskers steamrolled the Hawkeyes in three sets, 25-22, 25-14, 25-9. Nebraska hit .316 as a team and hit a season-high seven aces. Gina Mancuso tallied 12 kills to lead the Huskers attack, while Morgan Broekhuis added 10 kills. The Huskers visit the Illinois Fighting Illini on Sunday afternoon.

Storm Name Three Captains

The Tri-City Storm named three captains yesterday. Three-year USHL veteran Brian Ward will wear the captain’s ‘C’, while two-year veterans Heikki Liedes and Tim Bonner will be the alternate captains. Head coach and general manager Josh Hauge says Ward is the perfect player to wear the ‘C’. Ward says he’s ready to meet the leadership challenge that awaits him. “I’m just excited; it feels good,” Ward said. “I’m just trying to lead by example. I’ve been a little more vocal the past couple weeks and I’m just trying to step up and take the team in the right direction.” The Storm are 1-3-1 on the season thus far. They host Omaha at the Viareo Events Center in Kearney this Friday and Saturday night.

Flavor Flav Threatened To Go Crazy-Loco On Fiancee’s Son, That’s Vegas Baby!

Entertainer Flavor Flav is jailed in Las Vegas on felony assault and misdemeanor domestic battery charges after police say he argued with his fiancee and threatened to attack her teenage son with a knife.

Officer Bill Cassell says no one was injured in the scuffle about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday at a home in a residential neighborhood several miles southwest of the Las Vegas Strip.

The 53-year-old former rapper and reality television star’s legal name is William Jonathan Drayton Jr.

He’s being held on $23,000 bail at the Clark County jail, with an initial court appearance scheduled Thursday. It’s not clear if he has a lawyer.

Drayton was part of the 1980s and 90s rap group Public Enemy. His public persona includes wearing a big clock on his chest.

Postal Service Contractor Misuses Company Gas Card

A Lincoln-based postal contractor who misused a gas card given to him by the U.S. Postal Service has been given three years of probation.

The Lincoln Journal Star reports that 73-year-old Ervin Stepanek was sentenced on Tuesday.

Stepanek told the judge he was sorry and that he accepted full responsibility for his crime. Stepanek had pleaded guilty to theft of public money.

He’s already paid back $90,000. He must pay nearly $37,000 more.

Court records say Stepanek admitted that from May 2005 until early 2008 he stole gas by misusing the card. At the time, Stepanek’s company, Blue Falcon Mail Service, had contracted to carry mail between postal outlets.

Mother Charged In Fatal Accident

A Sargent mother has been charged with two counts of felony child abuse for an Aug. 22 crash that killed one of her daughters and a friend.

Investigators say 28-year-old Amanda Wilder was south of Miller on U.S. Highway 183 when she lost control of the truck and it rolled, ejecting three of the four people in the truck.

Eleven-year-old Destani Wilder and 24-year-old Rebecca Veeder died at the scene. Amanda Wilder and 8-year-old Montannah Wilder were treated at a hospital.

The Kearney Hub reports that investigators believe Amanda Wilder was speeding, and that none of the truck’s occupants were wearing seat belts, as required by law.

A phone listing could not be found for Amanda Wilder. Online court records indicate she does not yet have an attorney.

Nebraska Mega Millions Found In Fremont

A Fremont man has won $1 million from the Nebraska Mega Millions lottery game.

The Nebraska Lottery says a ticket bought by Gerald Ritter at Tom’s Beverage Shop in Fremont matched five of the six numbers from Friday’s drawing: 6, 10, 24, 26 and 42. That won him $250,000, But he’d added the $1 Megaplier option, which multiplied the $250,000 by four.

Ritter says he and his wife, Robin Ritter, plan to pay bills and save the rest of the money for their future.
