NP Man Dies In Fatal Accident Hours After Pursuit

A roll-over collision on I-80 Wednesday morning resulted in the death of 28-year-old Floriberto Parra-Munoz Jr., just hours before his death, Parra-Munoz was believed to be the driver in pursuit by an officer from the North Platte Police Department. No other individual was involved in the accident.

The fatality occurred at 3:22AM, near mile marker 203, four miles east of Brady in Lincoln County. According to the Nebraska State Patrol Parra-Munoz was heading east when the vehicle entered the median, he over corrected, causing the vehicle to roll-over, ejecting Parra-Munoz from the vehicle. Parra-Munoz was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the accident.

The victim had two active arrest warrants with probable cause for arrest. Leading up to the accident, almost seven hours before at 8:45PM, on October, 16th, authorities responded to the Kwik Stop at 1402 Rodeo Rd, because Parra-Munoz allegedly fueled his vehicle with nearly $50.00 of gasoline and drove away without payment. Parra-Munoz left his Nebraska ID inside the Kwik Stop before he left. Authorities were unable to locate the victim/suspect until sometime around 1:33AM Wednesday morning.

An officer on routine patrol from the NPPD noticed a Chevy Impala that matched the description from the incident, which was confirmed to be registered to the victim/suspect, Parra-Munoz. A pursuit began once the vehicle began to violate stop signs and traveling at excessive speeds.  According to officer Rodney Brown, with the NPPD, the pursuit began eastbound on E. 4th Street, south to Philip, east to Newberry, North to E. 4th and then south on Bicentennial, at which time it was terminated by the supervisor on duty.

The search for the suspect ended once the NSP identified Parra-Munoz at the scene of the accident Wednesday morning at 3;22AM. His family has been notified. NSP Troopers Connelly and Haday responded to the accident.

Wednesday Sports Day – Tigers Can Clinch AL Pennant; Pivotal Game Three in NLCS as Series Shifts to St. Louis

Tigers look to clinch/Cards and Giants resume play

UNDATED (AP) — The Detroit Tigers can clinch a spot in the World Series with a win over the Yankees in the Motor City this evening. The Tigers took a 3-0 lead in their best-of-seven American League Championship Series last night with a 2-1 victory. Justin Verlander held the Yankees in check, allowing the lone run on three hits in 8 1/3 innings of work. Phil Coke came on in the ninth to record the final two outs. The loser was Phil Hughes, who allowed a run in three innings of work.

The pitching in tonight’s fourth game has CC Sabathia on the mound for the New Yorkers against Max Scherzer.

If the Tigers win they can sit back and wait for the end of the National League Championship Series. Should the Yankees win, Game 5 will take place tomorrow in Detroit.

The third game of the St. Louis-San Francisco NLCS is being played this afternoon in St. Louis. The Cardinals won the opening game 6-4 while the Giants roared back to a 7-1 victory in Game 2. Today’s pitching matchup has Matt Cain going for the Giants against fellow right hander Kyle Lohse for the Cards.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy expects second baseman Marco Scutaro to be in his lineup card for today game. He was injured in the previous game when Matt Holliday of the Cards plowed into him while sliding into second base.

Results of an MRI exam showed Scutaro has a strained left hip and a sore left knee.

Regarding the possibility of retribution for the hard slide, Bochy says, “that’s over. You have to move on.”

Cyclist loses sponsor and steps down from chairmanship of Livestrong

NEW YORK (AP) — Nike is severing ties with famed cyclist Lance Armstrong, citing insurmountable evidence that he participated in doping and misled the company for more than a decade.

The clothing and footwear company said today that it was ending Armstrong’s contract “with great sadness.”

Nike Inc. said it will continue to support the initiatives of Livestrong, a cancer nonprofit organization.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Lance Armstrong is stepping down as chairman of his Livestrong cancer-fighting charity so it can focus on its mission instead of its founder’s problems.

Armstrong’s announcement came minutes before Nike Inc. announced it had terminated its personal contract with him.

The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency released a massive report last week detailing allegations of widespread doping by Armstrong and his teams when he won the Tour de France seven consecutive times from 1999 to 2005.

NP Town Hall Lectures Features Guest Author On Wilderness Survival

Author and lecturer, Michael Tougias, was the featured speaker today at the North Platte Town Hall Lectures program held at The Neville Center.  Tougias has authored several books on the theme of survival stories, and what can be learned from those incidents.

Tougias joined the lecture circuit so that he could share his writing experience of developing an understanding of how people can actually develop survival skills or techniques that may be able to help them out of a tight situation, should one develop unexpectedly.

Many of the books written by Tougias are real life stories that have an urgent quality about them, as he relates the details of a tragic accident, and then how those involved were able to survive.  He does this through extensive interviews with the survivors.

Tougias said Disney Company has expressed interest in making one of his books into a full length motion picture.  Tougias is published by Simon and Schuester Books.

Tuesday Sports Wrap – Tigers Take 3-0 Series Lead

Tigers go up 3-0

DETROIT (AP) — Justin Verlander is the latest pitcher to silence the New York Yankees’ lineup.

The Detroit Tigers own a three-games-to-none lead in the American League Championship Series and are one win away from their first World Series berth in six years following a 2-1 win over the Yankees. Verlander gave up only three hits and was sensational despite just three strikeouts over 8 1/3 innings, limiting the Yanks to a pair of Ichiro Suzuki hits and no walks until Eduardo Nunez led off the ninth with a homer. Verlander is 3-0 with a 0.74 ERA this postseason.

Verlander retired his first 10 batters before Suzuki singled in the fourth, a half-inning before Delmon Young opened the scoring with a solo blast off losing pitcher Phil Hughes.

Hughes left the game two batters after Young’s blast, charged with a run and three hits in three-plus innings. The Yankees said Hughes was suffering from a stiff back.

Detroit’s second run came on Miguel Cabrera’s fifth-inning double. Cabrera had a chance to break open the game an inning later, but he grounded into an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded.

Robinson Cano finally ended his postseason-record batting skid. The Yankees’ second baseman had been 0-for-29 since Game 2 of the ALDS before lacing a single with two out in the ninth, putting runners on first and second. But Phil Coke finally closed out the win by getting Raul Ibanez to strike out.

Other than Cano, the Yankees’ team-wide batting slump continued despite two significant lineup changes. Third baseman Alex Rodriguez and Nick Swisher stayed on the bench after going a combined 7-for-52 in the postseason. They were replaced by Eric Chavez and Brett Gardner, who went a combined 0-for-7.

The Tigers had tossed 20 straight scoreless innings until Nunez homered. New York has scored in just two of 30 innings the entire series.

Scutaro may play Wednesday

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy tells The Associated Press there’s a “good chance” second baseman Marco Scutaro will play in Game 3 of the NL championship series against the Cardinals Wednesday afternoon.

Scutaro strained his left hip when the Cardinals’ Matt Holliday crashed into him with a hard slide in Game 2 at AT&T Park. The second baseman went down in the first inning of the Giants’ 7-1 win, then hit a two-run single in the fourth before coming out of the game after the fifth inning.

Bochy called it “an illegal slide.”

Kolb out indefinitely

PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kevin Kolb has rib cartilage damage and will be sidelined, in the team’s words, “an unspecified period of time.” Kolb, who took over when starter John Skelton went down in the opener and directed the game-winning drive, had the team at 4-2.

The job will revert to Skelton, who beat out Kolb for the starting job in the preseason and just now is returning to health from a sprained left ankle.

Kolb was hurt trying to make it to the line of scrimmage on a busted play late in the Cardinals’ 19-16 overtime loss to Buffalo on Sunday.

Cowboys’ owner doesn’t expect Murray to play Sunday

IRVING, Texas (AP) — Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones says it “looks obvious” that running back DeMarco Murray won’t play at Carolina because of a sprained left foot suffered in Sunday’s 31-29 loss at Baltimore. Jones said the team is encouraged that the sprain wasn’t more serious than it was.

Felix Jones is expected to start in Murray’s place.

QB given OK to practice

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City quarterback Matt Cassel has been cleared for non-contact practice and could play in the Chiefs’ next game on Oct. 28 against Oakland. Cassell sat out Sunday’s game at Tampa Bay with a concussion while backup, Brady Quinn, had two interceptions in a 38-10 loss to the Buccaneers.

New owner for Cleveland’s NFL team

CHICAGO (AP) — The sale of the Cleveland Browns to Jimmy Haslam III has been unanimously approved by NFL owners, which is leading to a change in leadership at the top of the team’s front office. Haslam paid previous owner Randy Lerner $1 billion for the franchise.

In his first move as owner, Haslam announced that team president Mike Holmgren will be leaving the team at the end of the season. Former Eagles executive Joe Banner has been hired as the Browns’ CEO, replacing Holmgren.

The fate of coach Pat Shurmur and general manager Tom Heckert, both Holmgren hires, won’t be determined until after the season, Haslam added.

Defensive coordinator fired

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Juan Castillo is out as the Philadelphia Eagles’ defensive coordinator, replaced by secondary coach Todd Bowles. The dismissal comes after the Eagles blew fourth-quarter leads in consecutive games.

Castillo was with the Eagles for 18 years, longer than any coach in franchise history.

Americans advance

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — The United States men’s soccer team has advanced to next year’s final round of the World Cup qualifying.

Clint Dempsey scored the last two goals as the Americans beat Guatemala 3-1 in Kansas City. Dempsey set up Carlos Bocanegra’s tying goal in the 10th minute, then scored in the 18th and 36th.

The Americans needed merely a draw to advance to the six-team finals in North and Central America and the Caribbean. They topped their semifinal group with 13 points at 4-1-1.

Earnhardt sees concussion specialist

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Dale Earnhardt Jr. visited a noted concussion specialist in Pittsburgh on Tuesday as part of the planned rehabilitation program to get NASCAR’s most popular driver back in a car. Hendrick Motorsports confirmed that Earnhardt met with Dr. Micky Collins of the UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Program. He was accompanied by neurosurgeon Dr. Jerry Petty, who would not clear Earnhardt to race because of two concussions suffered over the past six weeks.

Scandal ridden cyclist gives up chairmanship

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Lance Armstrong said today that he is stepping down as chairman of his Livestrong cancer-fighting charity so the group can focus on its mission instead of its founder’s problems.

The move came a week after the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency released a massive report detailing allegations of widespread doping by Armstrong and his teams when he won the Tour de France seven consecutive times from 1999 to 2005.

Armstrong, who was not paid a salary as chairman of the Lance Armstrong Foundation, will remain on its 15-member board. His duties leading the board will be turned over to vice chairman Jeff Garvey, who was founding chairman in 1997.

And there is word from New York that Nike has severed its ties with Armstrong following doping scandal.

Lincoln County Experiences Early Voting

[poll id=”52″]

It appears many Nebraskans across the state have made a final decision of who they want to see in office. Early voting has experienced a boom in many counties that’s keeping election commissioners on their toes.

Lincoln County has sent out 2,000 ballots since early voting started October 1st. Election Commissioner and Lincoln County Clerk, Rebecca Rossell, mentioned how busy lunch hours have been during this year’s election. According to a press release from the office of the Secretary Of State, John Gale, the first week of early voting in October was the busiest her office has ever had.

Counties such as Lancaster, Sarpy and Douglas have all seen high voting numbers as well. Landcaster County records nearly 20,000, Douglas County shows 3,676 people have voted in person. More than 54,774 requests have been submitted for ballots and Over 17,000 Sarpy County voters have already requested an early ballot be sent to them or have voted in the office, according to Gale’s release.

Requests for early voting ballots can be found on the Secretary of State’s website (www.sos.state.ne.gov).  Look under ‘Elections’ for ‘Voter Forms’.

Approaching Deadlines:

— Registered voters can make requests until 4 p.m. October 31 for early voting ballots to be mailed. November 5 is the deadline for in-person early voting at county election offices for registered voters.

 — The close of polls on November 6 is the deadline for the return of early voting ballots to county election offices, including ballots returned by mail.

Advice From Gale:

“Don’t waste your ballot. Early voting in person or by mail should be done well ahead of deadlines to make sure your ballot gets cast and counted,” advised Gale.

“Early voting mail-in ballots have been shown to have as high as a 4% rejection rate when envelopes aren’t signed, or signed by someone else, or sent in a wrong envelope, or returned due to no postage.  So, follow the simple rules, get it done right, and make your ballot count.”

Purr-fect Pasta Dinner

Paws-itive Partners is hosting the Purr-fect Pasta Dinner on Friday, October 26, 2012. Dinner will be served at the Masonic Temple at 1600 West B Street in North Platte beginning at 5:00 pm. Four teams of celebrity chefs are preparing a variety of Italian entrees for the public’s palate delight. Chefs from North Platte Community College’s Phi Theta Kappa, Eagle Radio and Paws-itive Partners, KNOP-TV and North Platte Police Department/North Platte Animal Shelter will vie for bragging rights as the best chef. Competition will be stiff as diners determine the winners by vote. Along with the chefs’ pasta dishes a salad, bread sticks, beverages and dessert are included. Admission to the dinner will be by free will donation.

Purr-fect Pasta Dinner is a fund raiser for “Crazy for Cats,” the name affectionately given to the project to build a Cat Room at North Platte Animal Shelter. Presently, cats entering the shelter are housed in banks of stainless steel cages. The area can get loud with noise and activity and can be upsetting to cats. Once built, the Cat Room will be in a quieter area, separated from other things happening at the shelter. Cats will be in feline-friendly cages specially designed for a less stressful stay as they await adoption. Some cats and kittens will be allowed in a commons area to climb poles, sit on ledges and lay in sunshine as they interact with other well-socialized felines. The new Cat Room will be where the shelter’s main office is now. The office will move to another portion of the building and will be larger, more efficient and more conducive to serving the public.

The public is invited and encouraged to dine at Purr-fect Pasta Dinner October 26. For those who can’t be there but would like to support “Crazy for Cats” donations can be mailed to Mid Nebraska Community Foundation in North Platte.
