Live Stream: Free Fall From Edge Of Space, 23-Miles Of Adrenaline

Extreme athlete and skydiver Felix Baumgartner will add the unofficial title of fearless today once he finishes a 23-mile free fall from the edge of space.

According to the live stream:

Red Bull Stratos is a mission to the edge of space that will try to surpass human limits that have existed for more than 50 years. Supported by a team of experts, Felix Baumgartner will undertake a stratospheric balloon flight to more than 120,000 feet / 36,576 meters and make a record-breaking freefall jump in the attempt to become the first man to break the speed of sound in freefall (an estimated 690 miles / 1,110 kilometers per hour), while delivering valuable data for medical and scientific advancement

There’s been a delay due to high winds at around 700 ft. At around 10:00am there should be some action!

Omaha Teen Accused Of Murder Wants Case In Juvenile Court

A teenager accused of killing an Omaha girl wants his case transferred to juvenile court.

The 17-year-old boy faces adult charges of first-degree murder and use of a weapon to commit a felony. He’s accused of killing 16-year-old Melanie Koontz. Her body was found in an Omaha creek in May. Prosecutors say she was strangled.

KETV-TV says the boy’s attorney filed a motion last week to transfer the case to juvenile court. A hearing date hasn’t been set.

The Associated Press generally doesn’t identify juveniles accused of a crime.

Funeral Home Auctions Attracts Woman Looking For Halloween Decorations

Mortuary items from caskets to embalming tables have drawn a crowd, including a few Halloween hunters, during a unique auction in Columbus.

The auction was held on Saturday with items from two consolidated funeral homes.

The items including 15 caskets, ranging from fancy ones with colorful felt and silver-colored handles to simple, wooden designs. Also up for bid were grave markers, embalming tools and viewing tables.

Charles Bronson works with Grubaugh Auction Service, which held the auction. He says it’s rare to get the opportunity to auction off funeral home accessories. He expected the crowd to include many looking for Halloween decorations. That’s what brought Julie Wilke, of Columbus, to the auction. She bought a casket to put in her front yard.

Mobile Home Residents Raise Concerns On Severe Weather

Nebraska state and local officials are hosting a public forum to discuss the availability of storm shelters for mobile home park residents.

The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday at West Lincoln Elementary School in Lincoln. The meeting will include state Sen. Ken Haar of Malcolm, Lincoln City Councilman Carl Eskridge and Lincoln Emergency Management Director Doug Ahlberg.

Haar says the meeting was called after residents in his district raised concerns about where they could go during severe weather. Residents had previously been allowed to take shelter at a local Pfizer plant, but they can no longer do so because of liability concerns.

Haar introduced a bill this year to address the liability concerns, but his proposal stalled in committee.

Former UNL Assistant Professor Returning To The Classroom

The founding director of the International Quilt Study Center and Museum has announced that she will return to a full-time faculty position at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Patricia Cox Crews says she’s “always loved teaching and research and look forward to remaining a part of that.”

She joined UNL as an assistant professor in August 1984. From 1995 to 1997, she led the UNL Museum Studies Program.

The museum opened in March 2008.

Crews intends to take a sabbatical during fall semester 2013 and return to full-time teaching and research in the Department of Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design for the spring semester 2014.

Nebraska Public Power District’s $250 Million Bond Funded Project

The Nebraska Public Power District plans to issue $250 million in bonds this month to pay for transmission lines and power generation projects.

Some of the proceeds from the bonds will also be used repay part of the utility’s general revenue bonds. The fixed-rate, tax-exempt bonds will be issued on Oct. 15.

The bonds will be repaid over a 30-year period. Individuals interested in purchasing bonds should contact their broker.

Former Superintendent Serving Interim For Superintendent Who Died Of Cancer

The Beatrice school board has hired a former superintendent of Norris Public Schools to serve as interim Beatrice superintendent for the rest of the school year.

The board hired Dr. Roy Baker at its meeting on Monday evening.

Baker replaces Superintendent Jon “Tommy” Lopez, who died Sept. 28 of pancreatic cancer.

Baker led Norris Public Schools for 13 years until his retirement in 2010.

Baker will receive the remainder of Lopez’s salary, a total of nearly $116,000 for the contract running through June 30, 2013. Baker won’t receive insurance benefits or cash in lieu of the benefits.

Tables Turned On Best Buy Employee Accused Of Theft

A former worker has been accused of stealing nearly $6,500 from a Best Buy store in Lincoln.

The 27-year-old Pamela Weaver, of Lincoln, has been charged with felony theft. Weaver’s next court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 22.

Police say that while working at the store, Weaver looked up transactions in which customers paid cash. Police say she then would submit fraudulent returns and keep the money.

Weaver remains free on bond. A public phone listing for her can’t be found. Online court records don’t list the name of her attorney.

Alleged Non-Compliant Sex Offender Found In Sutherland

Deputies received information that a Non-Compliant Sex Offender was possibly living in Sutherland, NE.      It was reported that 56 year old Mickey Spencer was living in or around Sutherland area.   After an extensive investigation Deputies did locate Mr. Spencer in Sutherland.

 

Deputies interviewed Mr. Spencer and found he had moved to Sutherland in July of 2012, also he had not registered with the Sheriff’s Office as required.  Mr. Spencer was arrested for Failure to Register as a Sex Offender and incarcerated in the Lincoln County Detention Center.  Details of Sex Offender rules are on our website.

 

 

There’s a set of data a person must supply to register. According to the LCSO website:

All offenders will be required to register in 3 days prior to release from incarceration (local or state), or at a law enforcement agency with AFIS (automated fingerprint systems). In addition to the current registration data collected, the required information will also include:

1. ALL addresses that he or she lives or frequents

2. All employment locations

3. All school information

4. Travel & immigration documents

5. Professional licensees or certificates

6. Remote communication device identifiers/addresses

7. Email addresses, chat room id, etc

8. Signed consent form to search (if 6 or 7 is provided)

9. DNA sample

10. Palm prints in addition to fingerprints

All registration changes will take place in person at the sheriffs’ offices. The offender must report any change in residence/temporary residence, employment, or school on an approved form (NSP792).

Anyone required to register is required to report each email address, instant messaging address and any other Internet communication identifiers they use (i.e. names used in chat rooms, Facebook, MySpace). Any changes must be submitted within 24 hours. Providing false information or failing to report a change in 24 hours may constitute a felony offense.
