AUDIO: Papuchis Readies Husker Defense For Dynamic Ohio State QB Miller

Nebraska’s defense has made steady improvement in each of the last three weeks. But they’ll be tested this Saturday by perhaps the best quarterback they’ll face all season. Ohio State’s Braxton Miller had his way with the Husker defense last season before an ankle injury caused him to leave the game and opened the door for Nebraska’s comeback win over the Buckeyes in Lincoln. Huskers defensive coordinator John Papuchis says Miller is an even greater threat this time around. Miller has passed for 933 yards and rushed for 577 more in Ohio State’s first five games, all victories. The Huskers face Miller and the Buckeyes Saturday night at 7 PM.

But in all honesty, carving that pumpkin would take some man power….Just imagine all the pies you could make!

Former Police Chief Fails To Have A Misdemeanor Gun Charge Removed

Bellevue’s former police chief has lost his legal fight to have a misdemeanor gun charge against him thrown out.

John Stacey had challenged the charge, calling it unconstitutional.

On Monday, a judge threw out Stacey’s argument, meaning he will face the charge in court. His arraignment has been set for Oct. 19.

Investigators say Stacey loaned a handgun to Gretna’s former City Administrator Colleen Lawry, who did not have the proper handgun certificate.

Stacey was placed on leave in May for an unrelated case and retired later that month.

60-90 Years Prison For Iowa Man Who Stabed Ex Girlfriend And Mother In LaVista

A 25-year-old Iowa man has been given 60 to 90 years in a Nebraska prison for stabbing his former girlfriend and her stepmother in the Omaha suburb of La Vista.

Brandon Hendon, of Essex, Iowa, was sentenced Monday in Sarpy County District Court. He’d pleaded guilty to two counts of assault and one weapons count. In return, prosecutors dropped two other assault charges, a burglary charge and another weapons count.

Prosecutors say Hendon stabbed 18-year-old Jaimee Kirsch and 31-year-old Jessica Walker after he broke into Walker’s apartment on March 23. Three others in the apartment, including two children, were not injured.

Hendon was arrested later that morning in Plattsmouth, which is 13 miles south-southeast of La Vista.

Officials Searching For Replacement Of Superintendent Who Died Friday

Beatrice school officials hope to name an interim superintendent soon to replace Superintendent Jon “Tommy” Lopez, who died last week.

District board President Tobias Tempelmeyer says the search for an interim superintendent will begin immediately and may include candidates inside and outside the district. The board members hope to make their selection in the next 10-14 days.

Tempelmeyer says the interim superintendent likely will remain in charge for the rest of the school year and that a permanent replacement will take over in fall 2013.

Lopez was 48 and had been superintendent since July 2010. Lopez died Friday after a yearlong battle with pancreatic cancer.

Tempelmeyer says the loss of Lopez is a “huge blow to the district.”

Fremont Man Pleads No Contest To Assaulting And Spitting On Cop

A 21-year-old Fremont man has pleaded no contest to assaulting officers and spitting on one.

Sentencing is scheduled Nov. 26 for Eric Armenta, of Fremont.

Armenta entered the pleas on Monday to two counts of assault on an officer and one count each of terroristic threats and assault with a bodily fluid against an officer.

Dodge County Attorney Oliver Glass says the charges stem from a fight July 8 at a downtown Fremont business. Dodge County sheriff’s deputies and Fremont police officers responded.

Glass says Armenta kicked a door that struck an officer, breaking one of the officer’s hands. Glass says bit one deputy and spit in the face of another.

Glass also says Armenta threatened to harm jailers and their families.

Tuesday Sports Day – MLB Signs New TV Deal

Not finished yet

UNDATED (AP) — There are still some things to be decided before we get a complete picture of baseball’s fast-approaching playoffs.

The New York Yankees head into tonight’s outing against visiting Boston holding a one-game lead over second-place Baltimore in the AL East with two games left in the regular season. The Orioles take on the Rays at Tampa Bay. The Yanks and O’s have already clinched at least a wild card.

The Oakland Athletics secured at least a wild card berth with last night’s win against Texas and are just one game behind the West-leading Rangers headed into this evening’s matchup in California. The A’s and O’s are tied for the first wild card.

Also tonight in the AL, newly crowned Central champion Detroit is at Kansas City, Chicago plays at Cleveland a night after being eliminated from playoff contention, Toronto hosts Minnesota and the L.A. Angels are at Seattle.

St. Louis can clinch the NL’s second wild card tonight with a win over visiting Cincinnati or a Dodgers loss to West Division champion San Francisco. The Central champion Reds and East-winning Nationals are tied for the best record in the league. Washington hosts Philadelphia.

Elsewhere in the senior circuit, No. 1 wild card Atlanta is at Pittsburgh, the New York Mets play at Miami, Chicago is home to Houston, San Diego is at Milwaukee and Arizona entertains Colorado.

One and done

LONDON (AP) — Jose Maria Olazabal says being European Ryder Cup captain can be “torture” at times and he rules out staying on for another two years in the role.

The Spaniard guided Europe to a 14½-13½ victory over the United States in a stirring comeback Sunday at Medinah (muh-DY’-nuh).

Darren Clarke and Paul McGinley are the favorites to replace the popular Olazabal for the 2014 match in Gleneagles, Scotland.

MLB completes 8-year deal with Fox, Turner Sports

NEW YORK (AP) — Major League Baseball has agreed with Fox and Turner Sports on eight-year contracts that will run through 2021 and keep the World Series on Fox.

Fox also will retain rights to the All-Star game and a league championship series every year, and add coverage of two division series starting in 2014.

TBS will retain the rights to air one league championship series, two division series and one wild-card game.

The amount baseball receives from the two networks will double to an average of about $800 million annually, with Fox’s share averaging about $500 million.

ESPN and MLB last month announced a new deal covering 2014-21 that will increase ESPN’s average yearly payment from about $360 million to approximately $700 million.

SHR extends Quicken Loans as Ryan Newman’s sponsor

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (AP) — Stewart-Haas Racing announced some much-needed sponsorship Tuesday when Quicken Loans said it will double its commitment to Ryan Newman.

Quicken Loans was new to NASCAR this season with a nine-race sponsorship for Newman’s No. 39 team. The company will be back for 18 races next year as the primary sponsor.

The extension comes when team co-owner Tony Stewart is searching for a good chunk of funding for his three-car organization. The U.S. Army has said it won’t be back as primary sponsor for Newman, and Office Depot is leaving as a co-primary for Stewart.

The organization is apparently close to announcing a sponsorship agreement with Bass Pro Shops, maybe as soon as this weekend at Talladega.
