American Red Cross Upcoming Blood Drives

The American Red Cross reminds eligible donors that the need for blood is constant and the blood supply must be regularly replenished. By making an appointment to donate blood, dedicated donors can help the Red Cross meet the needs of patients – locally and across the nation.

Those looking for another way to increase the lifesaving impact of blood donation can become an advocate by encouraging friends and family to become dedicated blood donors, too. Just 3 percent of theUnited Statespopulation gives blood, and one of the top reasons people say they haven’t given blood is because no one asked them to.

Help the Red Cross increase the number of blood donors and maintain a stable blood supply for those in need by making an appointment to donate and encouraging others to give, too.

How to Donate Blood

Simply call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit redcrossblood.org to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license, or two other forms of identification are required at check-in.  Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental permission in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

About the American Red Cross

The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies more than 40 percent of the nation’s blood; teaches skills that save lives; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a not-for-profit organization that depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission. Martinez, Maher Receive Big Ten Weekly Awards

Brett Maher and Taylor Martinez were recognized for their efforts in the comeback win over Wisconsin, as both received honors from the Big Ten Conference on Monday. Maher was named the Big Ten Specialist of the Week and also the Lou Groza Award Star of the Week from the Palm Beach County Sports Commission, while Martinez shared Big Ten Offensive Player-of-the-Week honors with Northwestern’s Kain Colter.

Maher was 3-of-4 in field goals, connecting on field goals of 26, 38 and 41 yards, as the final one with 9:41 remaining gave the Huskers the winning margin in the 30-27 win. It was Maher’s second three-field goal game of the season and fourth of his career. In addition, he averaged 46.7 yards per punt on three punts and had touchbacks on five of his six kickoffs with the other one pinning the Badgers at their 10-yard line. It is the fourth time he has received the Big Ten Specialist of the Week.

Martinez led Nebraska back from a 27-10 third-quarter deficit against Wisconsin, completing 17-of-29 passes for 181 yards and two TDs, while rushing 13 times for 107 yards and a score. His 107 yards rushing marked his 10th career 100-yard game, and he moved into Nebraska’s career top five in both touchdown passes and passing yards. The 17-point comeback tied for the second largest in school history, as Martinez guided an offense which racked up 259 yards rushing against a Wisconsin team that was allowing just over 80 rushing yards per game as a unit. It is the second time this season and fifth time in Martinez’s career he has earned conference offensive player-of-the-week honors.

AUDIO: Beck Preaches Offensive Consistency as Huskers Begin Prepping for Buckeyes

The Husker football team had every right to be satisfied on Saturday night after completing one of the largest comebacks in school history in beating Wisconsin 30-27. But the afterglow always fades when a new week of practice begins. The Huskers started preparations yesterday for their first Big Ten road game this season. They’re heading to Columbus to take on the unbeaten Ohio State Buckeyes. Offensive coordinator Tim Beck says his group still has plenty of room for improvement. “We are not as consistent as I would like us to be,” Beck said. “We’ve got to learn how to get out of our own way and not turn the ball over and not have penalties.” The Huskers fumbled six times in Saturday’s game, losing two inside their own 30 yard line. Saturday’s game has been announced as a night game. It will kick off at 7 PM and be broadcast live nationally on ABC.

Starting C Walton Out For Season

Denver Broncos center JD Walton will miss the rest of the 2012 season. Walton was placed on injured reserve yesterday after fracturing and dislocating his left ankle in the second quarter of Sunday’s 37-6 win over the Oakland Raiders. The third-year pro had only missed one snap in his career before the injury. Veteran Dan Koppen will replace Walton in the lineup. Linebacker Joe Mays, who was suspended for Sunday’s game, will take Walton’s place on the 53-man active roster.

Former NPHS Athlete Joel Woodhead Named Semifinalist For Major Scholar-Athlete Award

Joel Woodhead

Selected as the best and brightest from the college gridiron, The National Football  Foundation (NFF) & College Hall of Fame announced today the 147 candidates for the 2012 NFF National  Scholar-Athlete Awards, presented by Fidelity Investments®, a leading provider of not-for-profit workplace retirement savings plans in higher education. The 147 nominees also comprise the list of
semifinalists for the 2012 William V. Campbell Trophy, endowed by HealthSouth, which recognizes an individual as the absolute best football scholar-athlete in the nation.

Peru State College senior running back Joel Woodhead of North Platte is among the semi-finalists, one of nine nominees from the NAIA level. Woodhead was pleased with being named a semi-finalist and said, “To be considered for this honor is outstanding just by itself. However, to be considered along with such outstanding players such as Rex Burkhead of Nebraska, Matt Barkley of USC, and other big names, is really an honor.”

Peru State nominated Woodhead because of his outstanding academic performance and his community  service commitments. Woodhead is an exercise science major with a business minor and has maintained a 3.83 cumulative grade point average at Peru State. Last fall, Woodhead was named a 2011 Daktronics NAIA Scholar-Athlete and will once again earn the same recognition this year. A dean’s list honoree for six semesters, Woodhead was selected this year to serve as a tutor for biomechanics and exercise physiology courses.

Woodhead’s community and campus involvement includes participation in PEAKS (Physical Education, Activity and Kinesiology Students), TeamMates mentor, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. In addition, Woodhead has volunteered for a wide variety of events both in Peru and back in his hometown of North Platte.

Steve Schneider, Peru State’s athletic director and head football coach was pleased to learn Woodhead was a semi-finalist. Schneider

Joel Woodhead (#7) in action

said, “Obviously, we know Joel is disappointed that his injuries have kept him from playing as much as he would like over the last two years. However, Joel still is there encouraging his teammates. In addition, he is a good role model for our younger players in all aspects, so it is great he is listed as a semi-finalist for this top honor.

Nominated by their schools, which are limited to one nominee each, candidates for the awards must be a senior or graduate student in their final year of eligibility, have a GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, have outstanding football ability as a first team player or significant contributor, and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship. The class is selected each year by the NFF Awards Committee, which is comprised of a nationally recognized group of media, College Football Hall of Famers and athletics administrators.

Crime Update: Mystery Movers, Man Calls 911 On Himself

Stanley Churchwell

On Saturday September 29th, officers from the North Platte Police Department responded to a possible burglary of a home.

Several individuals were allegedly loading a pickup with items taken directly from a home in the 700 block of North Bryan. When officers arrived, the several individuals, like the merchandise, were gone.

The described vehicle, driven by suspect Stanley Churchwell, 26, was located shortly after officers responded. According to the NPPD, Churchwell said he was cleaning the property as requested by the owner of the home although the owner claims he didn’t give anyone permission to be on the property.

After investigation Churchwell was arrested for two felony offences: Burglary and Theft By Taking. Most if not all of the stolen merchandise was recovered.

As for the several other individuals, Churchwell allegedly convinced them he was hired to clean the property and they apparently agreed to help him.

 Later That Night…

Randall Northey

At around 10:30 PM on Saturday, someone reported a disturbance in the 1600 block of west 9th street. Officers met with the suspect, 28-year-old Randall Northey who appeared intoxicated and the victim who was later identified as Northey’s girlfriend.

Northey allegedly caused an argument the three children witnessed. Northey threw his girlfriend on the floor where a bottle of alcohol was broken. Northey’s girlfriend received cuts and bruises from the incident.

Northey was arrested on two misdemeanor offenses: 3rd Degree Domestic Assault and Child Abuse

The Very Next Day…

On Sunday, September 30th at around 1:15 PM, 911-dispatch answered a call of a male subject reporting an armed intruder inside his home while duly noting that he himself was also armed. According to the NPPD, the caller sounded intoxicated and gave the 911 dispatcher a false address.

The 911 Dispatch Center uses advanced technology that supplied officers with a general location that the call was made, once in that area the officers heard gunshots. That’s when they saw a man armed with a handgun in a nearby yard. The man was taken into custody.

Investigation revealed that the man armed with the handgun was the same who made the call to 911 reporting an armed intruder. The man was taken into Emergency Protective Custody for the safety of himself and others.
