Monday Sports Day – NFC West Showdown Tonight

Scoring could be at a minimum tonight

GLENDALE, Calif. (AP) — The defensive-minded NFC West is in the NFL spotlight for tonight’s Week 8 finale.

After a 4-0 start, Arizona will be out to halt a three game losing streak when it hosts division leader San Francisco. The 49ers check in at 5-2 and can open a two-game lead over the Cards with a victory.

With an offense ranked 31st in the 32-team league, Arizona will have to lean on a defense that is ranked No. 7. San Francisco has the No. 1 defense in the NFL and the ninth-ranked offense.

San Francisco quarterback Alex Smith has already matched his interception total from last season. Four of his five picks have come in the last two games.

The Cardinals handed the 49ers one of their three losses last season.

NFL moves trade deadline to Thursday

NEW YORK (AP) — The NFL has moved its trade deadline back two days to Thursday because of potential complications from Hurricane Sandy.

All 32 teams were notified Monday that the league’s offices would be closed through Tuesday because of the storm. So the deadline now is 4 p.m. ET on Thursday, when waivers for vested veterans also begin.

This is the second time the trade deadline has been moved this year. After negotiations with the players’ union, the deadline was switched from after games of Week 6 to Oct. 30, after games of Week 8.

Traditionally, there are few trades by the teams at the deadline. The NFL hoped the two-week change might result in more deals.

Zeller near unanimous preseason pick

The biggest man on The Associated Press’ preseason All-America team got the most votes.

Seven-foot sophomore center Cody Zeller, the main reason Indiana is the preseason No. 1 for the first time in 33 years, was one vote shy of being a unanimous selection for the preseason All-America team.

Zeller, who averaged 15.6 points and 6.6 rebounds while shooting 62.3 percent from the field, received 64 votes from the national media panel which selects the weekly Top 25.

Also on the team announced Monday were junior forwards Doug McDermott of Creighton and Deshaun Thomas of Ohio State and three guards — seniors Isaiah Canaan of Murray State and C.J. McCollum of Lehigh and sophomore Trey Burke of Michigan.

McDermott was named on 62 ballots, while Canaan was on 43 and Thomas 26. McCollum and Burke tied for the fifth spot with 16 votes each.

McIlroy tops Woods

ZHENGZHOU, China (AP) — Rory McIlroy outdueled Tiger Woods in the first one-on-one exhibition match between golf’s two biggest names.

McIlroy shot a 5-under 67 to beat Woods by one stroke in an 18-hole match between the two top-ranked golfers at an exhibition in China.

Woods says he’d like to take on McIlroy more often to create a rivalry at the top of the game.

The Connection Homeless Shelter Starts The Week With A Shocking Surprise

Left To Right: Olivia Brown, June Robinson, Arleen Petersen, Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning, Connection Executive Director Roy Lawton, Mayor Marc Kaschke, Debra Defreecp, Erna Todd, Scott Olesky.

The Connection Homeless Shelter is definitely having a great start to their week thanks to the Attorney General of the State of Nebraska, Jon Bruning as well as North Platte Mayor, Marc Kaschke.

On Monday, October 29th, Bruning presented a check to the Executive Director of The Connection, Roy Lawton, for $26,562.50. According to Lawton, he was informed that Bruning had plans to visit the shelter but gave very little detail, “I’m still in a state of shock,” Lawton said shortly after receiving the courteous gift.

The funds were made available through a settlement over bad business practices. Bruning asked Mayor Kaschke where the money should be directed, kept for surprise; The Connection is where Kaschke decided as a fit destination.

The funds are unrestricted and will be used for general expenses or however the shelter will decide.

Police: Boy Says He Killed Dog Because He Wanted To See It Die

A 12-year-old California boy says he killed his dog because he wanted to see the terrier mix die.

The Salinas Californian reports police officers found the 12-pound dog hanging by its collar on a bedroom door handle.

Investigators say the boy told officers he was mad at the dog and he wanted to see it die.

Dispatchers got a 911 emergency call Friday afternoon from a female caller saying the boy was hurting the dog. People in the boy’s apartment refused to open the door when Salinas police arrived, so officers obtained a pass key.

The boy was arrested and taken to Monterey County Juvenile Hall for investigation of felony animal cruelty.

Convicted Killer Claims He Was Too Heavily Medicated, Wants Life Sentence Thrown Out

A man convicted of killing two people in Lincoln is asking a judge to throw out his life sentences, saying he was too heavily medicated on anti-psychotic drugs to be competent to stand trial.

The Lincoln Journal Star reports that Todd Baker asked a Lancaster County District judge last week for a hearing. Baker wants to present evidenced he says will show that his convictions were unconstitutional.

The 49-year-old Baker was convicted in 2006 in the 1996 killing of Anne True after Baker’s ex-wife went to police with information in the case. In 2007, while already serving a life sentence for True’s death, Baker was convicted of killing 15-year-old Missy Schmidt.

Police say Baker randomly attacked both women with a hammer and dumped their bodies in rural ditches.

SD Man Caught In Controlled Grass Fire Sues

A South Dakota man who was burned in a controlled grass fire in the Nebraska border town of Whiteclay is suing local authorities for negligence.

Bryan Bluebird, of Pine Ridge, says authorities failed to spot him lying in a field and ignited the blaze on a dangerously windy day.

The lawsuit, filed in Nebraska’s federal court, comes six months after he sent a tort-claim notice to Sheridan County and the Rushville Fire Department in northwest Nebraska.

Bluebird is suing the county, the volunteer fire department, the village of Rushville and various elected officials.

The 51-year-old man says he was lying in a field March 6 in Whiteclay when flames surrounded him. Authorities ignited the blaze to clear grass and prevent unintentional fires.

NWE Encourages You To Make Your Home Efficient For Winter

As winter approaches, energy prices in Nebraska and South Dakota appear stable, but consumers could still see higher bills if the weather is colder than last year.

Northwestern Energy officials say the price of natural gas remains significantly lower than it has been, so consumers will be able to expect lower utility bills if this winter is mild.

But if more normal winter temperatures return this year, then utility customers will use more energy and see higher bills than last year.

Northwestern’s Bobbi Schroeppel says the utility encourage customers to make their homes as efficient as possible to help reduce their utility bills.

Homeowners are encouraged to install programmable thermostats and add caulk around doors and windows to seal air leaks. Upgrading windows and doors can also reduce energy use.
