Betty Jane M. Gloy, age 85 of North Platte, died November 18, 2012 at Indian Hills Manor in Ogallala. She was born on December 25, 1926 in Ogallala, NE to Carl and Esther (Blomenkamp) Hansmeier.
Betty grew up southeast of Ogallala and graduated from Ogallala High School. She then attended business school in Colorado Springs, CO. Betty married Ervin Miller and the couple owned Miller’s grocery store in North Platte. Ervin was called back into the service and died in the Korean War.
Betty moved to Ogallala where she worked at J.C. Penney. She then married Ira Painter. The couple moved to Grand Island where they owned the Maid-Rite Café. They later moved to Ogallala where they owned the Lazy J Liquor Store. She and Ira moved to an acreage near Sutherland where Betty was the city clerk for the next 18 years. She was involved in many of the city’s projects and took pride in being a part of them. Ira preceded her in death in 1982.
Betty married Leonard Gloy in May of 1983. The couple lived in Imperial. After their retirement they moved to North Platte. He preceded her in death on July 2, 1999.
Betty was a member of Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church in North Platte and of the City Clerks’ Association. She loved to cook, entertain and travel.
Survivors include her daughter, Janie Painter of North Platte; two step-daughters, Gail (Gary) Snyder of Missouri, and Pam (Mike) Reed of Yuma, AZ; a step-son, Gary Gloy of Denver, CO; four grandchildren, Mike (Jessica) Snyder, Mark (Terra) Snyder, Jeff Gloy, and Melissa (Michael) Hughes; numerous great-grandchildren; two brothers, Gerald (Janice) Hansmeier of Ogallala and Tom (Mary Ann) Hansmeier of Ogallala; three sisters, Pat (Fred) Engel of Grant, Peg (Ivan) Ekart of Imperial and Mary Sue (Dan) Borowski of Grant; and numerous other family members and friends.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents; three husbands; a step-son, Ron Painter; a nephew, Tim Engel; and a great nephew, Bryan Gifford. A memorial has been established to the Lutheran Hour Radio Program and online condolences can be made at www.adamsswansson.com.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. MT Friday November 23, 2012 at St. John’s Lutheran Church southeast of Ogallala with the Reverend Robert Pierce officiating. Burial will follow at the St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. CT at Adams and Swanson Funeral Home, with the family receiving friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. CT Tuesday evening. Adams and Swanson Funeral Home of North Platte is in charge of arrangements.
