NSP Plans Seat Belt Enforcement In January & February

The Nebraska State Patrol is planning a special campaign in January and February to promote seat belt usage in Scotts Bluff County.

The State Patrol says recent surveys in the Scottsbluff-Gering area showed seat belt usage was around 50 percent. That’s well below the state average of 79 percent.

So troopers plan to conduct a special enforcement in January and February to enforce seat belt use.

State Patrol Capt. Mike Gaudreault says people are killed in car crashes all too often simply because they weren’t buckled up.

An $11,000 grant from the Nebraska Office of Highway Safety will pay for the added enforcement.

Clinton Treated For Blood Clot After A Recent Concussion Which Followed A Stomach Virus

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is under observation at a New York hospital after being treated for a blood clot stemming from the concussion she sustained earlier this month.

Clinton spokesman Philippe Reines says doctors discovered the clot Sunday while performing a follow-up exam. He would not elaborate on the location of the clot.

But he says Clinton is being treated with anti-coagulants and will remain at New York-Presbyterian Hospital through at least Tuesday.

Clinton fell and suffered a concussion in mid-December as she recovered from a stomach virus that left her severely dehydrated. She was forced to cancel a trip to North Africa and the Middle East as well as testimony before Congress about the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya.

North Platte Is The Only Place To Find DW39 Gear

New England Patriots running back Danny Woodhead is launching his own clothing line, but fans will have to travel to his Nebraska hometown to buy a shirt.

North Platte is currently the only place where Woodhead’s DW39 Gear is sold because Woodhead’s hometown friends are creating the shirts.

Jordan and Crystal Vigil designed the shirts at their Operation Clothing business and then pitched the idea to Woodhead. It probably helped that Jordan Vigil and Woodhead have been friends since childhood.

Whitetail Screen Printing in North Platte makes the shirts in cooperation with the Vigils.

The shirts will be available in time for the NFL playoffs.

Broncos Finish Regular Season at the Top

Peyton Manning threw for 304 yards and three touchdowns Sunday to lift Denver to a 38-3 win over Kansas City that sealed the No. 1 seed in the AFC playoffs for the Broncos.

Manning finished the season with 4,659 yards, only 41 short of his career high. He finished with 37 touchdown passes, and none will be more memorable than the last two — circus catches by Eric Decker and Demaryius Thomas that turned the game into a blowout.

Denver (13-3) won its 11th straight and leaped past Houston for the top seed after the Texans lost to Indianapolis 28-16 earlier in the day.

The Chiefs gained only 119 yards all day and finished their season 2-14. They will get the top pick in April’s draft.

Tour Bus Crash in Oregon Kills 9, Injures 20

Oregon State Police now say nine people have died in the Sunday morning bus crash along an icy Oregon highway.

Authorities say the bus careened through a guardrail and down a steep embankment, killing nine and injuring about 20 others.

The charter bus carrying about 40 people lost control around 10:30 a.m. on the snow- and ice-covered lanes of Interstate 84.

The bus came to rest at the bottom of a snowy slope. More than a dozen rescue workers descended the hill and used ropes to help retrieve people from the wreckage in freezing weather.

Landlord Kills Tenants Over Parking Dispute

Police say a 74-year-old Maine man faces charges in the shooting deaths of two tenants inside an apartment he rented at his home over a possible dispute about where they were parking their cars during a snowstorm.

Maine State Police say James Pak was arrested at about 10 p.m. Saturday following a standoff at his home in Biddeford. He is charged with killing 19-year-old Derrick Thompson and Thompson’s girlfriend, 18-year-old Alivia Welch.

Officials say police were called Saturday evening regarding a dispute over cars being parked in Pak’s driveway during the snowstorm. Minutes after police left, they received a call reporting the shootings.

Thompson’s mother, 44-year-old Susan Johnson, was being treated for a gunshot wound at Maine Medical Center in Portland. Johnson’s 6-year-old son was not hurt.

2 Teens and a 12 Year Old Charged in North Carolina Murder

Two teenagers and a 12-year-old girl have been charged in the shooting death of a North Carolina man during a carjacking.

Investigators say the three approached 35-year-old Johnny Danilo Villatoro of Durham on Friday night and asked him for a ride before carjacking and shooting him. Authorities found Villatoro lying in the street, and he later died at a hospital.

Police say the 12-year-old suspect accidentally shot herself in the stomach and leg while inside Villatoro’s car. She was being treated for non-life-threatening injuries and was expected to survive.

Authorities say the 12-year-old and two other suspects, ages 14 and 16, are being charged with murder. It wasn’t known if any of them had attorneys or when they would appear in court.
