NE’s Helmet Law Repeal Scheduled for Hearing

helmet-lawAnother attempt to repeal Nebraska’s mandatory motorcycle helmet law is scheduled for a hearing before the legislature’s Transportation and Telecommunications Committee this week.  The helmet law has been the subject of repeal efforts nearly every session since it became law in 1989.

This attempt by State Senator  Dave Bloomfield of Hoskins lifts the requirement for those 21 or old on motorcycles or mopeds, and requires all riders to wear eye protection.

A study on hospital costs for injured motorcyclists showed a 38% drop in total acute medical charges after the law was implemented, and a survey taken last August showed 83% of Nebraskans survey wanted to keep the mandatory helmet law with only 14% supporting repeal.
