Husker Softball Fails To Complete Sweep at Purdue

The 18th-ranked Husker softball team was unable to finish off a sweep on Sunday, falling to Purdue 6-5. After taking the first two games of the series in a doubleheader on Saturday, the Huskers fell behind 5-1 after one inning and were unable to mount a comeback due in large part to leaving 10 runners on base. Tatum Edwards, Gabby Banda and Jordan Bettiol each had two hits in the loss. Nebraska falls to 12-4 in the Big Ten and 34-10 overall. They host Creighton Wednesday night.

Brion Carnes to Leave Husker Football Program

The Husker football roster will suffer another loss. Junior wide receiver Brion Carnes will be transferring at the end of the spring semester. Carnes was originally recruited as a quarterback and was number two on the depth chart in 2011, but sank down the depth chart last season and requested a position switch. He played in just one game in 2012. Bo Pelini confirmed Carnes’ intent to transfer over the weekend. He said he believes Carnes is the only current Husker who will depart.

DNA Links Omaha Man to Five Rapes

dnaA DNA sample taken in 2011 after a Nebraska man’s burglary conviction has linked him to five sexual assaults in Omaha between 1999 and 2009.

Anthony G. Vaughn was arrested early Sunday.

Authorities say a warrant was issued for the 41-year-old Vaughn after labs linked his DNA to evidence from those previous sexual assaults.

Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine says it’s not clear why it took nearly two years for authorities to compare Vaughn’s DNA with the FBI database of crimes.

Authorities are also checking whether Vaughn may be linked to any other sexual assaults.

In February 1999, a jury acquitted Vaughn of sexual assault in a separate case.

Species tagged in Nebraska include various bass and trout types, as well as walleye, perch, crappie, bluegill, channel catfish and others.

Oregon Authorities Suspend Search for Lost Teen

oregon-missingThe search for an Oklahoma teenager who set out to test himself against the wilderness in the wilds of southeastern Oregon has been suspended indefinitely until conditions improve.

Sheriff Dave Glerup of Harney County, Ore., said Sunday that no search is planned until weather improves and snow begins to melt, allowing searchers to comb Steens Mountain.

Nineteen-year-old Dustin Self has been missing a month since setting out from his family home outside Oklahoma City.

Weather forced cancelled searches on Friday and Saturday.

Glerup says Self’s parents arrived at the scene Saturday and were taken to the location where Self’s pickup truck was found.

Glerup says he thinks Self is either dead or walked off the mountain and hitched a ride somewhere. He says they’ll decide by the week whether to resume the search, depending on weather.

FBI Disputes Claim Made by Bombing Suspects Mother

bombing-brothersThe FBI is disputing a claim by the mother of the suspected Boston bombers, who said the bureau had spoken to the older brother after the bombs exploded at last Monday’s marathon.

At FBI headquarters in Washington, spokesman Michael Kortan says the bureau’s 2011 interview with Tamerlan Tsarnaev (tsahr-NEYE’-ehv) was the only FBI contact with him.

Kortan is standing by the bureau’s public statement from Friday in which the bureau described that interview. That statement says the FBI did not learn of the identities of the bombing suspects, Tamerlan and his brother, Dzhokhar (joh-KHAR’), until Friday, the day Tamerlan was killed.

The brothers’ parents in Russia have insisted that the FBI continued to monitor Tamerlan after the 2011 interview and say both of their sons were set up.

Reese Witherspoon Charged with Disorderly Conduct

reese-witherspoonPolice in Georgia say that actress Reese Witherspoon has been arrested on a disorderly conduct charge after a traffic stop involving her husband in Atlanta.

A Georgia State Police incident report says that Witherspoon was arrested early Friday and charged with disorderly conduct.

The report says a state trooper observed that a car driven by Witherspoon’s husband, James Toth, was failing to stay in its lane. The officer writes that Witherspoon disobeyed multiple orders to stay in the car while he performed a field sobriety test on Toth. After she refused to return the car, she was handcuffed and arrested.

The officer says that Witherspoon asked him “Do you know who I am?”

Toth was charged with driving under the influence.

A message left seeking comment wasn’t immediately returned by Witherspoon’s publicist, Meredith O’Sullivan Wasson.
