Junior National Champion Wrestler Signs With Nebraska

Nebraska’s wrestling program scored a recruiting coup on the first day of the spring signing period. Destin McCauley will join the program for the 2013-14 season. McCauley, who will wrestle at 149 pounds for the Big Red, won six state titles as a prep star in Minnesota before spending two years in the Olympic training program. He was a member of the Junior World team and won a junior national freestyle championship in 2012. McCauley is the fourth member of the Husker wrestling recruiting class of 2013.

“We’re excited for Destin and the future he has here at Nebraska,” Head Coach Mark Manning said. “He comes to us as a very accomplished high school wrestler as well as international (freestyle) competitor. We have a number of young men in our program that have high aspirations, and Destin wants to make history here at Nebraska.”

A 26-year-old man charged with setting fire to three books at a University of Nebraska-Lincoln library last year has been given one to three years in prison.

Online court records say Joshua Hughes, of Lincoln, was charged with first-degree arson.  Hughes pleaded no contest after prosecutors lowered the charge. He was sentenced on Tuesday and credited for 327 days served.

Documents say Hughes was hiding in Love Library North when it closed at 11 p.m. on May 23, 2012. Police say Hughes called 911 for help because he couldn’t find a way out of the library after the fire started.

University officials say that other than the burned books, the library wasn’t damaged.

State Patrol Wants to Keep Kids Safe Online

ICACApril is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. During this time the Nebraska Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force is drawing attention to the need to keep our children safe online.

In 1998, the United States Department of Justice began an Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force to help deal with the growing problem of Internet-related exploitation of children. The ICAC Task Force laid the foundation for what would become a nationwide partnership of law enforcement agencies with the mission of protecting children online. Currently there are 61 ICAC Task Forces located across the United States representing over 2,000 federal, state, and local law enforcement and prosecutorial agencies. Since its inception, the ICAC Task Force program has investigated over 280,000 complaints of alleged child sexual exploitation and arrested almost 30,000 individuals.

“The Nebraska ICAC Task Force is a collaborative effort under the direction of the Patrol,” said Colonel David Sankey, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “Through their involvement in this task force, officers and prosecutors across the state work to combat the growing problem of the online abuse of our children.”

The Nebraska ICAC Task Force is comprised of 54 federal, state and local enforcement agencies and prosecutorial offices. In 2012, the Nebraska ICAC task force initiated 343 investigations, resulting in 60 arrests across the state. That compares with 565 investigations in 2011 resulting in 86 arrests.

In addition to conducting investigations the Nebraska ICAC Task Force provides training for law enforcement and performs educational presentations on internet safety.

Illinois Lawmakers Approve Medicinal Marijuana

Medical-Marijuana-leafThe Illinois House has approved the use of marijuana for medical purposes.

Lawmakers voted 61-57 Wednesday to allow physicians to prescribe marijuana to patients with specific terminal illnesses or debilitating medical conditions.

The legislation goes to the state Senate, where a similar version was approved in 2009. Senate President John Cullerton’s spokeswoman said this week he supports the legislation.

The measure gives a framework for a four-year pilot program that includes requiring patients and caregivers to undergo background checks. The legislation sets a 2.5 ounce limit per patient per purchase.

Supporters say marijuana can relieve continual pain without triggering the harmful effects of other prescription drugs. Opponents say the program would encourage the use of marijuana for recreational purposes.

Gov. Pat Quinn hasn’t said whether he would sign the measure.

Officials Close Portion of I-80 Due to Wintery Weather

NDORAuthorities have closed a portion of Interstate 80 in western Nebraska because of hazardous driving conditions caused by a spring storm.

The state Department of Roads says Wednesday that the westbound lanes of the interstate are closed between Big Springs in western Nebraska and the Wyoming state line. The Wyoming Department of Transportation requested the closure due to hazardous driving conditions in Wyoming.

The National Weather Service says the storm may drop several inches of snow in western and north central Nebraska between Wednesday and Thursday morning. Several winter weather advisories are in effect through Thursday as the storm moves east.

Strong wind gusts of up to 20-30 mph will cause blowing and drifting snow.

Authorities are advising drivers to reduce speed because of the snow.

Three Omaha Men Indicted on Alleged Ponzi Scheme

ponzi-schemesThree Omaha men have been indicted on federal charges that accuse them of bilking more than 100 people of about $4 million in a Ponzi scheme.

The federal indictments announced Wednesday name 44-year-old Jonathan Arrington, 52-year-old Michael Kratville and 38-year-old Michael Welke. Each faces 14 counts of mail and wire fraud and conspiracy.

Federal authorities say the three told investors with Elite Management Holdings Corp. that the fund guaranteed returns of 4 percent to 6 percent a month, and that investors’ risk was low, because only 10 percent of their principal investment would be invested at any one time.

Prosecutors say the three used more than $700,000 themselves, including for golf club memberships, travel and dining.

If convicted, the men face up to 20 years on each count.
