Five Workers at Grand Island Plant Recovering after Chemical Exposure

jbs-swiftFive workers at a beef processing plant in Grand Island are recovering after being exposed to dangerous chemicals during an accident that forced part of the plant to be evacuated.

Emergency crews were called to the JBS Swift plant around 10 p.m. Sunday after bleach was mistakenly pumped into a container of acid at the plant.

Grand Island Fire Chief Cory Scmidt says the mixture of chemicals caused a reaction that produced toxic gas.

Part of the plant was evacuated for more than an hour while the ventilation system was used to clear the gas.

Five workers were treated for exposure at a Grand Island hospital Sunday night and released.

Company officials did not immediately respond to messages Monday morning, so it wasn’t clear how the incident affected production.

NP Man and Passenger Charged with Felonies After Cops Find Meth in Vehicle

A North Platte man is facing multiple felony charges after cops find drugs in his vehicle.

North Platte Police conducted a traffic stop at around 1:40 a.m. Monday morning, after they witnessed a van driving erratically near 9th and Curtis.

The driver, 26-year-old Peter Bailey, initially gave Police a fictitious name.  While officers were searching Bailey and three other passengers, Bailey attempted to flee on foot.  He was quickly apprehended and restrained.

A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed multiple items that are often associated with the use of methamphetamine.  Bailey was also found to be in possession of Clonazepam.

After further investigation, Officers determined there was probable cause to charge Bailey with two counts of Possession of a Controlled Substance, Resisting Arrest, False Reporting and Obstructing a Police Officer.  Bailey also had an active warrant for a Parole Violation.

A passenger in the vehicle, Amie Jackson, 37, was arrested for Possession of Methamphetamine and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

Two additional passengers were released from the scene.

Bailey and Jackson were both jailed at the Lincoln County Detention Center.

The damage to the semi was estimated at about $10,000.

Another trailer arrived on the scene, and the majority of the fertilizer was salvaged.

Disneyland Closes Space Mountain and Two Other Rides to Review Safety

space-mountain-closedThree rides at Disneyland, including the famous Space Mountain roller coaster, were temporarily closed as the company reviews its safety protocols after being cited by state regulators.

Disneyland Resorts spokeswoman Suzi Brown says the resort received citations Friday from the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health.

The citations were related to an incident in November when a contracted worker was injured while performing maintenance on Space Mountain.

Brown says the closures Saturday of Space Mountain, the Matterhorn Bobsleds and Soarin’ Over California were voluntary and were made out of an abundance of caution.

The Matterhorn reopened Sunday. Brown said Sunday it is unclear how long the other two rides will remain closed.

Officials with Cal/OSHA did not immediately reply to a request for comment.
