Johnathon Winters – Dead at 87

WINTERSLOS ANGELES (AP) — Comedian Jonathan Winters, whose breakneck improvisations inspired Robin Williams, Jim Carrey and many others, has died at age 87.

Longtime family friend Joe Petro III says the Ohio native died Thursday evening at his Montecito, Calif., home of natural causes.

Winters was a master of improvisational comedy, with a grab bag of eccentric personalities and facial expressions. Characters such as the dirty old lady Maude Frickert were based on people Winters knew growing up in Ohio.

In the mid-1950s, “The Jonathan Winters Show” pioneered the then-new videotape technology on to do stunts like showing up as two characters on screen together.

He was introduced to millions of new fans in 1981 as the son of Williams’ goofball alien in the final season of ABC’s “Mork and Mindy.”

A Colorado community sent into a panic over the kidnap-slaying of a 10-year-old girl may learn whether a teenager charged with the crime asks for a trial despite allegedly confessing to police.

Eighteen-year-old Austin Sigg is charged with the murder, kidnapping and sexual assault of Jessica Ridgeway in Denver’s western suburbs.

The fifth-grader’s disappearance last fall sparked a massive manhunt and fear among residents of Denver’s west suburbs. Sigg was arrested after searchers found Jessica’s dismembered body in a field.

Sigg was supposed to enter a plea at a March 12 hearing. But his lawyers asked for time to review evidence and analyze his mental state at the time of the crime.

Student Campaign Sends Nebraska Teacher to the White House

housewhiteA campaign by some southeast Nebraska teenagers has propelled their teacher into the White House.

Crete High School students sent letters, emails and worked social media so civics teacher Bernie Ludvik could get to meet President Barack Obama.

Ludvik intended to attend Obama’s inauguration in January but was severely injured in a traffic accident on Nov. 26. As Ludvik recovered in a hospital, students began their campaign, appealing to several politicians. They also raised money to cover Ludvik’s trip to Washington, D.C.

Nebraska’s Sen. Mike Johanns finally wrote a letter to the White House, requesting a presidential visit for Ludvik. The newspaper says a White House staffer called Ludvik on Thursday, telling him he could meet the president on April 23.

Old school Husker basketball fans will smile when they look out on to the court at Pinnacle Bank Arena this coming season. The floor design plan was released yesterday, and in a call-back to the Danny Nee era, an outline of the state of Nebraska will surround the familiar big red N at center court. The state outline was on the floor of the Devaney Center from 1986 to 1996. Ironically, First National Bank will have their logo on the floor in the new arena named for one of their competitors.

Husker Hoops Assistant Reportedly Heading North

Nebraska’s men’s basketball coaching staff may be losing a member. Reports out of Minnesota are that Ben Johnson, who just finished his first season at Nebraska, will be returning to his alma mater and serving alongside newly-hired Richard Pitino on the Golden Gopher sideline. Tim Miles would not comment on the possibility that his staff might shrink. Johnson came to Nebraska after being an assistant at Northern Iowa for four years.

A native of Youngstown, Ohio, Heard would be reuniting with former Husker graduate assistant Vince Marrow, who also left Nebraska for Kentucky.

UNK Library Repairs May Take Until Fall

unk-library-damageOfficials at the University of Nebraska at Kearney say repairs to its library that was damaged by a snowstorm could take until the fall.

Janet Wilke, dean of the Calvin T. Ryan Library, says the school will have some time since it’s almost the end of the semester.

About 6,500 library books were damaged during a Monday storm that tore parts of the roof off. Water saturated the library carpet, and the wireless Internet system was damaged.

University staff and student volunteers have been cleaning up the debris since Tuesday. The books have been moved and are being refrigerated to prevent molding.

The library reopened Wednesday with limited access to the second floor.
