Forest Service to Revamp Chadron Building

usforestThe U.S. Forest Service has announced a $1 million energy efficiency renovation project for the Nebraska National Forests and Grasslands headquarters in Chadron.

Chadron radio station KQSK-AM reports (https://bit.ly/10ikNeu) that the building also houses the Pine Ridge Ranger District offices.

The project consists primarily of replacing the heating and cooling system with a geothermal heat pump. It will begin in July and take about a year to complete.

Supervisor Jane Darnell says the 1985 building is the least energy-efficient Forest Service building in the agency’s five-state Region II district.

GI Police: Stolen Skid Loader Used to Haul Off ATM

grand-island-policeGrand Island police have arrested a man they say used a stolen skid loader to rip up and carry off an automatic teller machine.

Police say officers were called to the scene around 5:15 a.m. Friday and found 41-year-old Bryce Malesker in a skid loader, smashing the stand-alone building housing the drive-up ATM. Police chased the skid loader — which has a maximum speed of about 10 mph — through Grand Island streets as it carried off the ATM in its front bucket.

Police say the ATM soon fell onto the roadway, and the skid loader continued through yards and fences before hitting and damaging an elementary school.

Malesker was arrested after the skid loader stalled out on a curb.

Lincoln County Settles Wrongful Death Lawsuit

Phillip Hatcher
Phillip Hatcher

Lincoln County has settled a wrongful death lawsuit with the family of an inmate who committed suicide in a jail cell in 2008.

Kara Hatcher Hawkins, the sister of 27-year-old Phillip Hatcher, filed the federal lawsuit in 2010, saying officials should have known Hatcher might try to kill himself because he was arrested in the middle of a suicide attempt.

The lawsuit was settled in February for an undisclosed amount.

Lincoln County sheriff’s officials have said Hatcher hung himself inside his cell with a sock. He died several days later at a hospital.

A grand jury investigated Hatcher’s death and decided no criminal charges were warranted in the case.

Events for the Dogs to Be Held at Fort Kearny

fort-kearnyThe Fort Kearny Outdoor Discovery Program has scheduled several events for dogs on May 11.

They include a dock jumping competition and a timed retriever maze. There also will be several water stations and ponds to keep pets cool.

Family activities on that day include shooting sports, kayaking, fishing, campground games, sling shots and trapping. There also will be a s’mores eating contest.

The spring celebration of Nebraska’s outdoors is free and runs 9 a.m.-4 p.m. A park entry permit is required.

Fort Kearny State Historical Park sits just southeast of Kearney in south-central Nebraska.

Officials Unsure About Future of High Plains Aquifer

USGSUnlike in Texas, groundwater levels in the aquifer beneath Nebraska have generally remained healthy, but officials aren’t sure if that will continue as farmers continue to irrigate.

Experts at the U.S. Geologic Survey agency that study the vast underground bodies of water that stretch beneath eight states say they can’t predict how the aquifer will fare.

Steve Peterson, lead hydrologist for the High Plains Groundwater Availability Study, says the aquifer’s future will depend on regulations and water-management decisions farmers and officials make.

Peterson says in Texas and other Southern Plains states groundwater levels have fallen more than 150 feet compared to the era before irrigation.

Peterson is working on a new report due out this fall that will look at groundwater issues.

Nuggets Desperate for Win in Game 4

Denver_NuggetsGeorge Karl glanced over at the sunlight shining through the floor-to-ceiling windows on the sixth floor gymnasium at The Olympic Club in downtown San Francisco on Saturday. Then the Denver Nuggets coach turned his attention back to his players on the court, cracking a smile at the serious expressions on their faces.

The Nuggets know they need a win, and they need a win now.

Fast, physical and flamboyant, the Golden State Warriors are beating the Nuggets at their own game. Denver has dropped two straight against the Warriors to fall into a 2-1 hole in the best-of-seven playoff series, which resumes Sunday night at amped-up Oracle Arena across the bay in Oakland for a critical Game 4 tilt.

NE Parks to Host Competitive Nature Hunt

great-nature-huntNebraska parks will soon kick off a summer competitive nature hunt.

Registration for the Nebraska’s Great Park Pursuit has opened.

The challenge is to go as many as 20 different local, state or federal Nebraska parks to search for natural impressions. The parks are located throughout Nebraska. The pursuit goes from May 1 and September 16. The event started to encourage healthy outdoor lifestyles and increases awareness of recreational opportunities.

Participants can register as a group or individual and print park maps online.

Groups follow clues at each park to locate a post, where they make a tracing of a nature impression. Participants are supposed to mail collected impressions to the event organizers.

Prizes are available. The more parks visited increases a group’s chance of winning.

FAA: Two Dead in Nebraska Plane Crash

faa

(AP)-Authorities have identified the two people killed when a small plane owned by a flight school crashed in northeast Nebraska this weekend.

Federal investigators are expected to reach the crash site about two miles southeast of Norfolk on Sunday afternoon to determine the cause of Saturday’s crash.

Officials say 26-year-old Dale Butler of Omaha and 24-year-old Amy Brobst of Fort Collins, Colo., both died on impact.

The Piper PA-28 plane that crashed was registered to the Pro-Flite Inc. flight training school based in Omaha. Company officials declined to comment on the crash Sunday because they don’t yet know what happened.

FAA officials said the plane struck a power line before crashing into some trees, but the cause of the crash wasn’t immediately clear Sunday.
