Lawsuit Over NE Inmate Death Dismissed
(AP) — A judge has dismissed a lawsuit brought by the family of a Nebraska inmate who died in 2010 while in custody.
The lawsuit was dismissed Thursday. Lancaster County District Judge John Colborn found there wasn’t enough evidence to show that state officials had been negligent in the death of 51-year-old Darryl Reed.
Reed died from heart disease and hardening of the arteries. He was serving a 5-to-8 year sentence for a drug conviction when he was taken from an Omaha prison to a prison infirmary in Lincoln because of behavior that led security staff to think he has used illegal drugs. Hours later, a nurse found him in distress, and he was taken to a Lincoln hospital, where he died.

Husker Baseball Falls to OK State in Game One of Doubleheader
The Nebraska baseball team (19-22, 11-4 Big Ten) took a 3-2 lead into the eighth inning against the No. 24 Oklahoma State Cowboys in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday at TD Ameritrade Park, but was unable to hold the lead, as the Cowboys came back to win, 5-3, in 10 innings.
It was the Huskers’ 12th loss this season by two runs or less.
The Huskers had the go-ahead run at third base with two outs in the bottom of the eighth and ninth innings, but were unable to come through with a clutch hit.
After pushing the game to extra innings, OSU scored two runs in the top of the tenth on four hits, including a pair of doubles
Norfolk Man Gets Credit for Time Served in Shaken Newborn Case
A new father who shook and injured his 2-week-old daughter has been sentenced to the six months he has already served in jail.
22-year-old Justin Gore, of Norfolk, was sentenced Thursday to time served. He also was ordered to take anger management and parenting classes.
The baby was taken to a hospital for vomiting and diarrhea in September. A doctor called police to report bruising and cranial bleeding consistent with an infant being shaken or struck.
Gore told the detective he had been up for long hours and shook the baby when she wouldn’t stop crying.
A lawyer for Gore says there appears to be no lasting injuries to the girl from the shaking.
RISE Promotes Literacy with Cornhusker Book Drive
Access to books has a serious impact on literacy rates in our State.
RISE Specialists from all over Nebraska want to change this as they work together on the state-wide Cornhusker Community Book Drive.
RISE Specialists feel that by increasing access to books for adults and youth in our communities, we can overcome the epidemic of illiteracy.
The North Platte community is collecting books that will be donated to the Pawnee Hotel Assisted Living Facility, The Rape and Domestic Abuse Program and the Connection Homeless Shelter.
They are looking for books from the following genres: Westerns, Inspirational, Self-Help, Eductional, Romance, Nonfiction, Biographies and Novels. Additionally, they will accept all books for children and teens.
Books can be dropped of at these locations:
District #11 Probation
110 East 3rd Street
North Platte Public Library
120 West 4th Street
Professional Financial Advisors
501 South Jeffers
More information on the Cornhusker Book Drive can be found by visiting www.serve.nebraska.gov.
The area contact in North Platte is Jessica Spors, RISE Specialist for District 11 Probation. She can be reached at (308) 534-4350 or by emailing jessica.spors@nebraska.gov.
RISE focuses on providing supportive services for adult and juvenile probationers in a group setting, with one-on-one sessions available as necessary. RISE Program Specialists work with a developed curriculum targeted for specific educational and/or employment skills. The RISE Program curriculum consists of different tracks to fit the individual probationer.
Adults can participate in the employment track, focusing on attaining and maintaining employment; the education track, focused on attaining a GED (for those who are not high school graduates) and higher education; or a dual track, meaning probationers receive support in areas of education and employment.
The RISE juvenile school support track is designed to specifically target youth struggling in school academically, as well as with attendance and attitude. The Navigator Program adds additional support for those who are assessed as our highest risk probationers.
State Senator to Speak at UNK Commencement

A state lawmaker is scheduled to speak at the University of Nebraska Kearney’s commencement ceremony in May.
Sen. Galen Hadley of Kearney, a professor emeritus at the university, will address more than 700 students who are receiving degrees on May 3.
The university is expected to award 525 undergraduate and 188 graduate degrees, an all-time record.
Hadley was elected to the Nebraska Legislature in 2009. He earned his Ph.D. in accounting at the university and worked as both a professor and administrator.
He was a member of the Kearney City Council and served as mayor.
NE Lawmakers Aim to Ban Synthetic Drugs
The Nebraska Legislature is expected to debate a proposal that would ban new classes of synthetic drugs that mimic the effects of illegal substances.
Omaha Sen. Beau McCoy of Omaha, who introduced the bill, says that these drugs are dangerous and need to be outlawed.
Douglas County Sheriff’s Office forensic scientist Christine Gabig says law enforcement struggles to keep up with and ban the new forms of synthetic drugs being created.
That’s why she is working with McCoy to craft legislation to ban new generations of chemically engineered drugs that mimic the highs users get while using drugs like marijuana, meth, LSD, ecstasy or psychedelic mushrooms.
Gabig says the drugs have been sold at tobacco and head shops disguised as incense.
Debate on NE Veteran’s License Plate Bill Set to Begin
Veterans and active-duty service members would have the option to display their status on Nebraska state identification cards and license plates, under a bill in the Legislature.
Debate could begin Monday on the measure, which combines the ideas of several state lawmakers. The Department of Motor Vehicles would design “Military Honor” license plates by 2015. It also would allow for a special designation on driver’s licenses and state identification cards.
The bill was introduced by Sen. Annette Dubas, chairwoman of the Transportation and Telecommunications Committee.
Dubas has said the bill seeks to honor service members. She says it might also serve as an indicator to law enforcement that a person is suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder.
Shoplifter Breaks Lincoln PD Officer’s Nose
A Lincoln police officer is recovering from a broken nose after being punched by a suspected shoplifter.
Police said the officer was among those who responded to a report of a shoplifter at a Lincoln grocery store before dawn Friday morning.
Police say the 30-year-old suspect fled when officers arrived. Officers gave chase, and the suspect turned around and punched officer closing on him.
The officer, who has not been named, was taken to a local hospital for treatment of a broken nose.
The suspect is behind bars on suspicion of theft and felony assault of a police officer.
