Omaha Conference to Focus on Disaster Plans for Long-Term Care Facilities

UOFNMEDICALCENTERA national conference in Omaha next month will help long-term care facilities plan for disasters.

The two-day conference will feature speakers from around the country who have been through disasters at nursing homes or rehabilitation facilities. And experts will offer advice on meeting Medicaid and Medicare requirements.

Residents of long-term care facilities are already often in poor health and may need special care after a disaster.

UNMC Dr. Philip Smith says planning and preparation are critical for these facilities.

The conference will be held May 21-22 at the CenturyLink Center in downtown Omaha.

Russian President Says Boston Bombing Shows America’s Mistake

vladimir-putinRussian President Vladimir Putin says that the Boston bombing should spur closer security cooperation between Moscow and Washington but it also proves that the West was wrong in supporting militants in Chechnya.

Putin said the two ethnic Chechen brothers accused of staging the explosions — and who have only briefly lived in Chechnya as children — have “proven the correctness of our thesis” about the need to pool efforts in the fight against terrorism.

Putin criticized the West for refusing to declare Chechen militants terrorists and for offering them political and financial assistance in the past.

The U.S. has urged the Kremlin to seek a political settlement in Chechnya and provided humanitarian aid to the region during the two separatist wars that began in 1994.

K-State Outslugs Huskers

Nebraska’s offense scored 10 runs on 15 hits Wednesday night at Hawks Field, but it wasn’t enough, as the Kansas State Wildcats  escaped Lincoln with a 13-10 victory. The loss dropped the Huskers one game below .500 on the season, 19-20, while the Wildcats picked up a season sweep of the Huskers after winning the first two games of the three-game season series in Manhattan earlier this year.

Nebraska’s pitching staff dug the Huskers into a 8-1 hole after the top of the second, but NU’s bats clawed back with eight unanswered runs to take a 9-8 lead into the sixth inning.

After Nebraska took the lead with a four-run fifth, the Wildcats responded with three runs in the top of the sixth on three hits to retake the lead, 11-9. KSU added two more runs in the top of the seventh, pushing its lead to four. The Huskers scored just once more on a two-out RBI single from Austin Darby in the eighth, and then went down in order in the ninth to end the game.

News Anchor Swears on the Air and Becomes an Overnight Celebrity

aj-clementeA North Dakota news anchor whose profanity-laced television debut got him fired after one broadcast is already getting job offers.

A.J. Clemente’s first stint as an anchor at KFYR-TV in Bismarck on Sunday night was also his last after he uttered two obscenities just as cameras began to roll. Clemente was fired Monday.

By Wednesday, he was making appearances on national talk shows as a bit of a celebrity. On “Live with Kelly and Michael,” hosts Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan offered Clemente a job interviewing celebrities on the red carpet at the premiere of Pierce Brosnan’s “Love Is All You Need.” A wide-eyed Clemente agreed.

Later, he tweeted photos from the set of “The Late Show” with David Letterman, where he was to appear Wednesday night.

NE Lawmakers Advance Health Exchange Oversight Bill

ne-legislature-13Lawmakers are moving ahead with a commission that would keep watch on the federal government while it creates a health insurance exchange for Nebraska.

Lawmakers voted 28-0 to advance the measure, which would let the state offer recommendations to the federal government as the health care law moves forward.

Gov. Dave Heineman opted to let the federal government create and manage the exchange because he says it would cost Nebraska taxpayers too much if the state created it.

The commission would ensure there’s transparency as the federal government creates the exchange. It will also give oversight and recommendations regarding implementation of the exchange.

The panel would be made up of Nebraska residents, a small business owner, and others from the health and health insurance industries.

Rockies Walk Off in Comeback Victory

Yorvit Torrealba’s RBI single in the 11th inning gave the Colorado Rockies a 6-5 walk-off win over the Atlanta Braves yesterday at Coors Field. The Rockies trailed 5-3 heading to the ninth inning, but rallied against Atlanta’s All-Star closer, Craig Kimbrel. Dexter Fowler’s two-run double with two outs tied the game and sent it to extra frames. In the 11th, Wilin Rosario led off with a double and scored on Torrealba’s base hit to left field three batters later. The win snaps a three-game losing skid for the Rockies. Tonight the Rockies begin a seven-game divisional road trip with the first of four games against the Diamondbacks in Arizona. Jorge de la Rosa looks to keep his 17-inning scoreless streak alive as he gets the start on the mound for Colorado. ESPN Radio 1410 will bring you the action, with pregame coverage at 8:05 and the first pitch at 8:40.
