Lincoln Man Sentenced to Prison for Slamming Baby’s Head into Medicine Cabinet

Victor Patterson
Victor Patterson

(AP) — A 26-year-old Lincoln man accused of slamming his 13-week-old baby son’s head into the bottom of a medicine cabinet has been given four to six years in prison.

Online court records say Victor Patterson was sentenced Wednesday by Judge Jodi Nelson in Lancaster County District Court. Patterson had pleaded no contest to attempted child abuse after prosecutors lowered the felony charge.

Patterson was arrested after the boy’s mother took her son to a Lincoln emergency room in March 2012 because the baby kept vomiting. Doctors say the boy had a skull fracture, five broken ribs, a lacerated liver and a broken collarbone.

Police say Patterson threw the baby into a coffee table, accidentally slammed the boy’s head into the medicine cabinet and squeezed him so hard the boy suffered internal injuries.

Victim Says Retaliation Prevalent in Military Sexual Assaults

marine-corps(AP) — A former Marine says she’s speaking publicly about her rape because victims are suffering the same retaliation that she encountered when she reported her sexual assault 14 years ago.

Stacey Thompson went public with her story Thursday in an exclusive interview with The Associated Press.

She says she paid heavily for reporting that her sergeant had drugged her and sexually assaulted her in his barracks in 1999 at a Marine base in Japan.

Thompson says her perpetrator was allowed to leave the Marine Corps, while she was kicked out with an other-than-honorable discharge for being drugged.

A Pentagon report released earlier this month found 62 percent of sexual assault victims in the military who reported being attacked say they faced some kind of retaliation afterward.

Rock Creek Trail Days Scheduled at Nebraska Park

rock-creek-trail-days(AP) — Several historical interpretations, re-enactments and displays are scheduled for Rock Creek Trail Days at Rock Creek Station State Historical Park.

Events will be held Saturday and Sunday at the park, which is southeast of Fairbury in Jefferson County.

The station was established in 1857 along the Oregon and California trails. It was a supply center and resting spot for westward pioneers and later became a Pony Express relay station.

Activities will include black powder gun demonstrations, cowboy action shooting, wagon rides and demonstrations of several period trades.

There will be a free-will donation lunch on Saturday and a buffalo stew cookout Saturday at 7 p.m.

Tickets must be purchased in advance. They cost $9 for adults and $6 for ages 13 and under. Call the park at 402-729-5777.

Three Nominated to Fill NE Appeals Court Vacancy

ne-court-of-appealsA judicial nominating commission has forwarded the names of three people to Gov. Dave Heineman to consider in filling the 1st Judicial District vacancy on the Nebraska Appeals Court.

The nominees are Riko Bishop, Amie Martinez and James Smith, all of Lincoln.

The person chosen would be replacing Judge Richard Sievers, who has resigned.

The 1st Judicial District covers Lancaster and Seward Counties.

Severe Weather Leaves One Dead, More Rocky Weather Expected Today

severe-weather(AP) — Authorities say a driver died when strong winds knocked a tree onto his car in rural Arkansas as thunder storms and several tornadoes swept through the Midwest.

The Grant County Sheriff’s Office says the man was killed late Thursday in Tull, 30 miles southwest of Little Rock.

The National Weather Service says up to a dozen tornadoes touched down in Arkansas and Oklahoma on Thursday, injuring nine people and damaging several structures.

More bad weather is on tap for Friday.

Forecasters say large hail and tornadoes are likely in Oklahoma and parts of the Ozarks in Arkansas and Missouri. The areas at greatest risk include Oklahoma City, Tulsa and Joplin, Mo., where the second-deadliest American tornado on record killed at least 158 people in 2011.

Rollover Accident Sends Three Teens to the Hospital

injury-accidentA rollover accident sent three teens to the hospital Wednesday afternoon.

Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to Snake Road north of Sutherland at about 2:30 p.m., on the report of a rollover accident.

Upon arrival, Deputies learned that 16-year-old Alexandria Lurz of Ogallala was driving northbound on Snake Road when she hit a puddle of water, which caused her to lose control.  The vehicle hit an embankment and rolled one time, coming to rest on its wheels.

Lurz and three passengers were transported to Great Plains Regional Medical Center by Sutherland Rescue.  Three of the vehicles occupants were wearing seat belts, however, Deputies say the person with the most severe injuries was not restrained.

None of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening according to authorities.

No citations were issued, and alcohol was not a factor.

Robert H. “Bob” Olson

bob

Robert H. “Bob” Olson, 80, of North Platte, passed away on May 29, 2013, at Great Plains Regional Medical Center.
Robert H. “Bob” Olson was born on Dec. 11, 1932, in Redwood County, Minn., to Minnie and Leonard Olson. He was the fourth of nine children living on the family farm on the banks of Plum Creek, near Walnut Grove. Bob graduated from Walnut Grove High and joined the U.S. Army in 1953. He was stationed in Germany, assisting with post-war reconstruction where he became skilled in radio electronics. After his discharge in 1955, he continued his education at the North Dakota Auto Mechanic School, and later radio communication, attending night school in St. Paul.
He met his future wife, 21-year-old Alice Nelson, at a Marshall, Minn., community dance in the summer of 1955. Alice was a nursing student at Gustavus Adolphus College in Minneapolis. They married in August 1957, living in St. Paul for nearly two years where their first child, Janice, was born. Bob was working at a radio station, then got a job at a television station in Reliance, S.D. Three more children, Donna, Jim and Mike, soon followed.
In 1965, Bob and Alice moved the family to Holdrege, where he worked at the Nebraska Public Television station. They later moved to Winside, where he continued his career in public TV broadcasting and attended Wayne State College for additional training. Bob and Alice moved the family to North Platte in 1971 so he could take a position at one of the state’s newest public TV transmitter sites at the time, KPNE channel 9, located south of Sutherland. Bob was promoted to supervisor of KPNE a few years after taking the job and was responsible for managing the small staff of broadcast engineers, as well as maintaining and upgrading the transmitter and associated electronic equipment. After more than 35 years of service to NETV, he retired in 2000.
Bob had a mechanically inventive mind, always experimenting and trying to improve on all sorts of his own designs. One of those experiments – affixing leeboards and a mast to a rowboat – led to his interest in sailing. Bob had a wide interest in athletic activities including snow skiing, sailing and tennis, winning shelves full of trophies as a result of his competitive nature. Bob’s thriftiness and inventiveness allowed him to create many useful contraptions and gadgets for use with his sailboats, trailers and cars, often built from little more than a pile of scrap and some nuts and bolts.
He was a longstanding member of the American Legion, Ogallala Yacht Club and the German American Club. Bob was a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church since moving to North Platte in 1971.
He is preceded in death by parents, Leonard and Minnie Olson; and siblings Everett, Galen and Genevieve (Minor).
Bob is survived by his wife, Alice; his children, Janice, Donna, Jim and Mike; and siblings, Grace (Shattuck), Bonnie (Pomerencke), Edmund, Larry and Dale.
Memorials are suggested to The ALS Association Development Department, 27001 Agoura Road, Suite 250, Calabasas Hills, CA 91301, or to donor’s choice. Online condolences may be shared at carpenter
memorial.com.
Services will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, June 15, at the Messiah Lutheran Church. Cremation was chosen. Those wishing to sign the memorial book may do so from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday, June 3, through Wednesday, June 5, at Carpenter Memorial Chapel, which is in charge of arrangements.
