(AP) — An audit has found that Nebraska officials failed to properly train and supervise a state employee who oversaw millions of dollars in health insurance payments, resulting in possible fraud and payouts for people who didn’t qualify.
State Auditor Mike Foley said Wednesday that officials failed to properly review costs for the program’s 661 participants.
Auditors reviewed a program that uses state and federal dollars to pay for private insurance when doing so is cheaper than covering the expenses through Medicaid. A review of 70 cases found 53 with errors, resulting in hundreds of thousands of dollars in erroneous payments.
Foley says the program was overseen by a Department of Health and Human Services employee who was poorly trained and supervised.
Department officials say they’re taking steps to correct the problem.
