NE Inmate’s Wife Fined for Smuggling Pot into the Slammer

marijuana-jail(AP)-A Lincoln inmate’s wife has been fined for trying to smuggle pot to him in prison.

Lakeisha Davis, of Omaha, pleaded no contest Tuesday to a misdemeanor charge of attempt to convey an article to an inmate. A Lancaster county judge fined her $500.

Davis was originally charged with delivering or attempting to deliver contraband.

An arrest warrant affidavit says prison guards interrupted a January visit by Davis to Michael Benson. The guards suspected Davis passed along a bag of marijuana to Benson.

Benson is in prison on drug and theft charges.

Komodo Dragon on Display at Henry Doorly Zoo

komodo-dragonA Komodo dragon is now on display at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium.

Officials say the Komodo dragon is on display at the zoo’s Cat Complex.

The Komodo dragon was hatched at the San Antonio Zoo in 2007. It was raised at the Houston Zoo before being transferred to Omaha in November.

Komodo dragons are native to a handful of small islands in Indonesia. They are listed as vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List due to overhunting of red deer, their main source of food.

(AP) — A Lincoln “comfort” dog that has been to several national tragedy sites this year is now in Oklahoma to help victims cope with the devastation caused by a massive tornado.

Moses has been sent to comfort those affected by the Boston bombings, a West Texas explosion and school shootings in Newtown, Conn.

Moses is part of Lutheran Church Charities National K-9 Comfort Dog Ministry.

Pastor Glen Keylon says Moses provides a lot of relief to people — especially children — when they are able to pet him during a tough time.

The massive tornado that tore through Moore, Okla., on Monday killed 24 — including 10 children — and injured more than 200.

Omaha City Council Delays Civic Auditorium Redevelopment

omaha-civic-auditorium(AP) — The Omaha City Council has deferred a plan by outgoing Mayor Jim Suttle to have a large real estate firm help in redeveloping the Omaha Civic Auditorium site.

The City Council unanimously voted Tuesday to delay voting on the plan for a couple of months. That plan would pay the CB Richard Ellis/Mega commercial real estate firm $300,000 to help create a vision for the site, as well as select a company to build a development.

The selected developer for the site would pay either $1.5 million or 1.5 percent of the project’s total cost to CB Richard Ellis/Mega. In turn, the real estate firm would refund half the city’s $300,000 payment.

The downtown, 9,300-seat auditorium is set to shut down in summer 2014.

UNMC Shows Off New Eye Institute

UNMCThe University of Nebraska Medical Center is showing off its new $30 million eye institute.

The grand opening celebration for the Stanley M. Truhlsen Eye Institute is being held on Wednesday.

The institute houses research facilities, offers treatments for macular degeneration, glaucoma and other degenerative eye diseases, and provides eye exams.

Officials hope the institute will produce revolutionary research and become recognized as one of the top eye care centers. It is led by Doctors Quan Dong Nguyen and his wife, Diana Do.

The institute is named after a former faculty member in UNMC’s ophthalmology department and former president of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Ophthalmological Society.

47,000 Pounds of Phone Books Collected for Recycling in Lincoln

phone-bookResidents in Lincoln and a group of Boy Scouts have collected 47,000 pounds of outdated phone directories for recycling.

The Cornhusker Council Boy Scouts collected telephone directories door-to-door in Lincoln neighborhoods. Directories were also dropped off at parks and recreation centers throughout Lincoln.

The collections were part of the “Think Yellow, Go Green” recycling campaign. It was run by The Berry Company, which prints Windstream Yellow Pages, along with the city of Lincoln, Southeast Community College and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

More than 323,000 pounds of outdated directories have been collected over the last five years.

Oklahoma Mayor Wants to Require Tornado Shelters

tornado-shelter(AP)-The mayor of the Oklahoma City suburb battered by a monstrous tornado says he is pushing to require safe-room shelters in all new homes.

Glen Lewis said Wednesday he will propose an ordinance in the next couple of days at the Moore City Council that would modify building codes to require the construction of reinforced shelters in every new home in the town of 56,000.

The suburb was also hit by a massive tornado in 1999 that followed nearly the same path as the storm Monday that killed at least 24 people.

Lewis says he is confident he’ll get the four votes needed on the six-member council. The measure could be in force within months.

Underground safe rooms are typically built below garages and can cost around $4,000.

United States Tests Intercontinental Missile

missile(AP) — The U.S. Air Force has launched an unarmed intercontinental ballistic missile from a California base, a month after the test flight was postponed because of tensions with North Korea.

Vandenberg Air Force Base says the Minuteman 3 lifted off at 6:27 a.m. PDT Wednesday. It later splashed down thousands of miles away in the Pacific.

It’s the first Minuteman test-launch of the year. Several Minutemans are launched each year at from Vandenberg to determine the weapon system’s accuracy and reliability.

Officials say the original mid-April flight plan was delayed to avoid it being misconstrued by North Korea during a time of heightened tensions. It was rescheduled for Tuesday morning but was pushed back a day due to a problem with range safety instruments.
